Check out Gentle Giants Draft Horse rescue! I volunteer there - we're the largest draft horse rescue in the US. I'm happy Colby's Crew has also started to rescue draft horses. Too many of these horses end up in kill auctions when they are no longer "useful." Edit to add: Phantom is a shire at Gentle Giants who is slightly taller than Big John; he's only 7 so he's still building mass. You can see him on the Gentle Giants social media & he's been "interviewed" by various media outlets.

My daughter Olivia and her wife Ally, started Colby’s Crew about a year ago and they recently moved their rescue to a gorgeous horse farm in the rolling hills of Charlottesville, Va. with plans to continue to expand, in order to save as many horses as possible💖Definitely check out all of their videos! What these ladies are doing with their rescues is pure magic! The passion they both have for rescuing is unparalleled. Ally is definitely a horse whisperer! She is also a very accomplished equestrian. They’ve been featured on my favorite social media channel the Dodo🤩. @@jaye282 reading this gave me chills. I love the positive domino effect being created by the story of their rescue. I’m very excited for you and your husband! There is something otherworldly about the connection we mere mortals have with these gentle giants. Olivia’s horse life began when she was only 18 months old. Her first time “sitting” on a pony there was a light in her eyes I had never seen before and I knew it was my responsibility as her mom, to cultivate what eventually became her life’s passion. I thought I wanted a daughter who was a cheerleader/girly girl…how wrong I had been. There is no greater gift to a parent than seeing your children happy and healthy. And so began her life as a horsey girl. 💕

Big John, when he arrived at the sanctuary, was so abused and neglected, he couldn’t even trot without pain. After lots of care from Alli and the vets, John can actually run now. I also live in Australia and it’s not illegal to ride your horse through a drive through, some stores just won’t serve you. But horses have the same right of way as cars.

My old arab had a thing when dogs would charge and attack us. She was scared if her own shadow, but took absolutely not shit from other creatures (arab mares 🙄 am i right) anywhooo, any time a dog would try it, she would let them run at her once without reacting. If they tried it again, with or without me, she was after it. She would chase it until the owners came 🤣 she also chased the soccer players during thier warm up run and if we rode in the bush and some poor bugger on a mountain bike rode anywhere near her, she'd chase them too. Years ago, when I still had my first horse, I was riding through a park (bridle path) near Rotterdam when my horse got attacked by two Dobermann Pinchers. Both grabbed a front leg of my horse and she went down. I was screaming and yelling at the owner who did nothing. He did tell me I shouldn't be riding there though.. Uhm.. I was on a bridle path and dogs weren't allowed to be off leash there. Some people... Luckily it ended well and because of the very good nature of my horse I didn't end up with a complete traumatized animal. I love dogs, I have three myself, but people like that piss me off big time.

In America, especially rural areas, its very common for people to be riding their horses through town and go through drive throughs. Technically they are a form of transportation, so drive thrus are usually cool with it. Also a friend of mine had coyotes get in their pasture once and it ran their horse through the fence out onto a back rural road in the middle of the night and it got hit by a truck and killed like the week before their world championship they had qualified for. Roads and horses are no joke.

It happened often when I still lived in Netherlands that dogs came up to us aggressively. Usuallly just turning my horse in the direction of the dog would be enough to scare them off. I rode a very brave Frisian mare and she didnt mind charging the dog if necessary. She was fantastic. Someone at our stables though did get attacked by a dog and her horse took the brunt of it, luckily she stayed on her horse. But the poor horse did need stitches. But stay on your horse if you can, the horse is much stronger than you and you will be safer on its back. A horse can deal with a dog attack, humans can't.

It depends - I’ve been attacked by a dog. I stayed on. My horse leapt in to the air and galloped off while I was telling the owners to get their dog after he couldn’t take anymore. I got really hurt. My gelding is a weenie okay, so I fully braced for a bolt or at least, a massive spook. Nope! He stood square, looked down at the little midget snapping at his feet and LUNGED forward, almost ripping the reins from my hands in a full on cobra-strike. The *rage* i felt surge through him in that moment was palpable, Not sure who was more shocked, me or the dog. Fortunately no dogs were chomped, nor horse traumatized and the ride ended on a good note and spooking at the mailbox.

There's one "but". If U stay on, and things get bad - U might get badly hurt. Sometimes it's safer to stand by the horse or even let it go, so the horse can run - probably back to the stable while it cools down or right back to the stable... Lots of them will go back. But it's better than getting you hurt and/or your horse hurt - if the dogs are like... U know... aggressive, wanna bite and stuff. If they're just interested and wanna play then yeah... there's probably bigger chance of them getting hurt than U and yer horse.

Because of the dogs: if you stay on the back of the horse, the horse and the dogs obviously are facing each other and since the horse is afraid and the dogs are also afraid and barking because they dont know how to handle the situation or are unsure about the situation because they e.g. never seen a horse and their owner does not say anything so they are feeling like they need to handle the situation and protect their owner / their pack. Now we have a horse in fear and dogs which are not sure what to do which is really high risk! If you stay on the horse you do not control the situation and let the situation possibly escalate, SO, get down, in front of your horse (it needs to have you as a shield, the leader of the herd would always go in front of the other horses), look the dogs in die eyes and shout smthg to make them go away (a dog would bark to chase them away, shouting imitates barking) if they do not react then go after them with your stick, hit them if necessary. This may seem violent but thats clear communication for the dog. You are resolving the situation like this and taking over the control, since none of the animals can handle this because the horse and the dogs are unsure in the end so the solution is someone who is sure in their behaviour. (of course your horse needs to have clear respect for you so you are safe that it does not injure you after you got off its back) edit: i understand the fear of your horse running away, but I think if your horse runs away with you on it in pure panic OR is bucking you off the risk of accidents is also there, but with you on its back, you will also be in the accident, In my opinion you are safer on the ground.

So on the dog thing; I’m pretty sure that rider is from the UK where there have been multiple issues/legal issues over dogs vs riders on pulbic paths/trails. If i’m not mistake i think that rider had stated her horse was maybe involved in a dog attack? My late mare when kept at home was around friendly dogs…at 2 boarding places not so much. Due to dismounting once when a dog decided to bite her leg…i fell under her. She then developed the “kill all dogs who attack when mom is on me” policy. I had arguments with dog owners who got mad at me when my mare would defend from an attacking dog.

Horses CAN feel emotions. Maybe not to the extent or complexity that humans can but they HAVE EMOTIONS. THey can fear, be sad, angry, depressed, happy, love, joy. IF you just spend a little time with horses you can tell that they each have there own unique personality, some are more clingy than others, some just want to be pet while others (My arab X QH mare) just want you to leave them alone unless you have food, they disserve love and respect

I can answer the what does it feel like to ride a horse that big: So when I was in elementary I rode an 18hh Thoroughbred x Percheron gelding. His trot was huge, I couldn’t sit it for life, and his canter was horrifying to sit. I ride a super tiny 13.3 chestnut mare now and she’s completely the opposite. For being a chestnut mare she’s super sweet. Super easy to ride.

The same with other equestrians. It's so sad that sometimes you can't tell people that you ride horses bc they will make fun of you or sexualize you. That's something we need to talk more aboyr

I didn't think it was funny when the little pony fell down. Yes, they are cute but not when they could get hurt by slipping on the concrete. Remember how upset you were when Chase fell down in the field. That woman should fix that area so they won't fall on the concrete. It's dangerous and they could get hurt very badly.

I've got a bit of experience on bigger drafts. Of course not as big as that, but I had two horses I rode a lot: A 17.3hh Percheron x Hanovarian - He wasn't the most comfortable, but I think it was because of the warmer blood giving him a more lively gait if you got him moving. He had a wonderful canter and a very agile jump for a heavier set horse. The other was an 18.3hh 3/4 Shire x, his trot has always been super bouncy just because of how big his stride is. His canter on the other hand, especially if you got a good contact and he was really using his hind end was amazingly comfortable. He was strange because he could collect ridculously well on a day when he had plenty of energy. I've found the most comfortable horses are the irish cobs/gypsy vanners, I used to ride a 15.1hh gypsy cob that got gelded late and did a bit of hunting as a stallion. He was as wide as he was tall and it was literally like riding a hairy armchair; he did have a son which was half vanner, half irish draft who also had the same armchair gait. Used to ride them out trekking with no stirrups because it was so hard to feel unseated on them. Speaking of the half and half and dogs. Yeah, dogs are no fun. One of our main routes passes through a farmyard that has a public right of way.... and they never ever used to have the boarder collies watched if they were loose. The older ones were fine and would just watch, but one of their younger ones had a go at that horse. Got a swift kick . On a different note, I've also had a border collie pup (around 9 months) throw herself at full speed at my head when I was riding a spooky mare; the outdoor school was built next to a very old wall that kept the lawn area in place. Both she and myself shat ourselves. I've never ridden that fast in a school before, let alone encouraged it because crazy pup.

In situations like this it really depends on your horse, I know for sure I would be safer on the ground in a situation when my horse starts to freak out (which barely ever happens) and it's because we've done a huge amount of groundwork that he feels safer and much easier to manage and direct with me on the ground. Whereas from the saddle if I start to loose control there is absolutely nothing I can do

Not on tic toc but you tube. I do not like any sexual things around animal or even people breeding them. I hate girls trying to look or be sexy on a horse also dancing on or around them. I do not like people not thinking about the horse and how it feels. Not fond of people showing how dumb they are by not doing ground work even after a horse has been trained. Loading is a big one. Please learn people. Loading is easy when taught correctly to the horse. No yelling, pulling, butt ropes and whips are not needed. Things I love. Funny things that happen but not staged or any one getting hurt. Any animal, reptile, bird or fish film that is too cute reacting to owner in fun to do or try. How to films on just about anything. For you Matt and Jesse, how to clean tack, how to check transport vehicles before loading a horse. Also for the two of you, raise a new baby horse together and both of you train your own specialty. I for one would watch every film. I think tic toc are short things so maybe to see animal sitting and watch the sunset together with owner. Over looking a valley in the early morning , playing in the rain. Things that bring a smile even when your sad.

On the dog situation - depends on the situation and the horse. However often dogs don’t recognise you as a person on the horse so getting off and calling them helps a lot for the aggression thing normally they will relax and come and sniff you vs for instance staying on my anxious arab that wants to swing around and run home, just aggravates things.

Being on the horse when it spooks, be it by rabbit(in my case a broken tail bone was the result), dogs, or something else, is exceedingly dangerous. A woman in my area, was on her horse when it spooked. It ran down the driveway, out onto the road, just as a truck went by, killing them both. Had she been able to(I know, we never want to leave our horse riderless and free, in the courtyard, driveway, or anywhere for that matter), she could have at least saved herself. From what I understand she was an experienced rider, but she couldn't get her horse under control(as an experienced rider, there are ways to get your horse refocused, and I don't know if she knew what to do in the situation). As much as we love our animals, we have to look at human lives too.

While I agree, they seem to be on a field with no cars around. I'd be more scared to encounter pedestrians or even dogs and have the horse run them over. You won't be able to stop the horse on skates so if it doesn't listen to you calling halt, who knows what happens. Lets just assume, she knows what she's doing and the horse listens.
