This video demonstrates the act of artificially inseminating a mare with semen. It discusses preparation prior to insemination and carrying out the procedure itself.
Equine Artificial Insemination (AI) is a breeding technique that involves collecting semen from a stallion and using it to artificially inseminate a mare. It is a commonly used method in horse breeding programs because it allows for the use of high-quality stallions that may not be available for natural breeding, and it also allows for genetic improvement through the selection of specific stallions.
The first step in the AI process is to collect semen from the stallion. This is usually done by electroejaculation, which involves passing an electric current through the stallion's reproductive tract to stimulate ejaculation. The semen is then evaluated for quality, including volume, concentration, and motility of the sperm.
Once semen has been collected, the mare will be brought into estrus (heat) and is ready for insemination. The insemination process involves introducing the semen into the mare's reproductive tract using a long, thin, flexible tube called an insemination pipette. The pipette is passed through the mare's cervix and into the uterus, where the semen is released.
The timing of insemination is important to ensure that the sperm will meet the egg at the appropriate time. This is typically done by monitoring the mare's estrus cycle through ultrasound and/or hormonal analysis, and inseminating the mare when ovulation is imminent.
After insemination, the mare will be monitored for pregnancy through ultrasound examination and/or hormonal analysis. If the mare becomes pregnant, she will carry the foal for approximately 11 months before giving birth.
Overall, Equine Artificial Insemination (AI) is a highly controlled and efficient method of breeding horses. It is a process that is typically carried out by veterinarians trained in equine reproduction, who have knowledge and experience in the collection, evaluation, and manipulation of semen, as well as the timing and technique of insemination.

Thank you for your question! The success rates will vary between individual mares and semen plus the operator but roughly speaking the success rates are: 1. Natural: 60% 2. Fresh chilled: 60% 3. Frozen: 50%

What is the success rate for AI as opposed to natural breeding?
