Equine Artificial Insemination (AI) is a breeding technique that involves collecting semen from a stallion and using it to artificially inseminate a mare. The first step in the AI process is to collect semen from the stallion. Once semen has been collected, the mare will be brought into estrus (heat) and is ready for insemination. The insemination process involves introducing the semen into the mare's reproductive tract using a long, thin, flexible tube called an insemination pipette. The pipette is passed through the mare's cervix and into the uterus, where the semen is released.
The timing of insemination is important to ensure that the sperm will meet the egg at the appropriate time. This is typically done by monitoring the mare's estrus cycle through ultrasound and/or hormonal analysis, and inseminating the mare when ovulation is imminent.
After insemination, the mare will be monitored for pregnancy through ultrasound examination and/or hormonal analysis. If the mare becomes pregnant, she will carry the foal for approximately 11 months before giving birth.
