While a physical exam can be performed in many different ways, it is best to pick a pattern and stick with it to ensure you don't miss something. In this video Kendra goes over her method for performing a physical exam on an equine. Try it out and watch others to come up with a pattern that suites you. Stick around for the end to learn how to properly give intramuscular & intravenous injections and draw blood!

I just wish she had explained what exactly she was listening for while she had the stethoscope on the upper and lower GI track.

9:35 - You can indeed use the gluteal muscles for IM injections, in addition to the Hamstrings (semimembranosus, semitendinosus)

It's a matter of should rather than can. Yes, you can use the gluteal muscles. But, you should use the semimembranosus/semitendinosus because in rare case of abscess from injection, it will drain better from that grouping of muscles rather than the gluteal muscles.

What size needles for injections and blood draw?
@kendrathevettech

Typically, I use a 20 gauge x 1.5 inch needle for intramuscular injections and 20 gauge x 1 inch for IV injections/blood draws. There are situations that indicate other gauges and lengths, but this is my most common use for your standard adult horse.
