Could any affordable charcoal grill on the market trump our tried-and-true favorite, the basic Weber kettle? We reviewed 7 charcoal grills-watch to see how we tested them. See which ones heated up the competition, and which ones left us cold.
We tested seven charcoal grills priced at $400 or less.
Grilling: We grilled hamburgers, fish fillets, and beef satay skewers, rating grills on their performance during quick, hot cooking. Grills that provided a thick sear rated highest.
BBQ/Heat Retention: We barbecued baby back ribs for 4 hours, turning them every 30 minutes and adding coals after 2 hours. We also monitored the temperatures of the grills for 2 hours with identical volumes of hot coals and half-open vents, without opening lids. The best grills maintained steady heat with the least temperature drop.
Design: We considered how easy it was to add coals, as well as grill layout, air vent position and control, lid, wheels, handles, and other features that contributed to the grills’ performance, ease of use, and versatility.
Assembly: We timed a pair of testers with no special training as they assembled each grill, noting the quality of the instructions. Faster assembly times earned high marks.
Cleanup: Grills that made it easier to remove ashes rated higher.
Capacity: We tested the fit of 14-pound turkeys under the lid of each grill and whether eight 4-inch hamburgers could be grilled at once.
Construction Quality: We observed the sturdiness of each grill and its condition by the end of testing.
Grate: We preferred cast-iron bars and roomy cooking surfaces.
Favorite Features: We noted parts of the grill that helped it perform better or made it easier to use.

*Love it!! I used to use a propane grill and after using my Weber, the food just tastes so much better and the temp **MyBest.Kitchen** control is so easy! Will never use a propane grill again!*

I would just buy the standard Webber and put a cheap hard table by it. the chimney starters work great no need for a propane starter

I agree there's no need for a propane starter, but it must be a very convenient thing to have.

All those things on weber performer are luxuries. Its Mercedes Benz of charcoal grills. In fact 20 buck cheap kettle is luxury. All i need to grill meat is fire and throw meat straight on coals and thats it. Everything else is luxury for convenience.

Agreed. You could also buy a grill grate with side hinges that allow for adding charcoal mid-cook, a dual probe thermometer that reads temps at the grill surface and internal meat temp, and charcoal baskets for zone heating and indirect heating, and you're good to go for $250-$300 with the Weber classic kettle.

I've had 6 or 7 Webers, several Charbroil Grills and currently have a $30,000. automatic Southern Pride Grll and my Portable Kitchen grill from my eighth Christmas, 54 years ago. They are all nice grills, but only one will practically last forever, the PK grill. I won the World Championship Open Contest at the Memphis in May BBQ contest cooking Chicken on my Portable Kitchen Grill. I plan to give it to my Grandson Wes when he turns eight in a couple of years. I love my PK Grill. It's the best!

I have a Weber Performer Platinum. The gas starter is a super feature and I absolutely love it. It's even easier than a piece of wadded newspaper, a few drops of vegetable oil, and a chimney starter, in fact I use my chimney starter with the gas starter sometimes and it couldn't be easier. The propane cylinder lasts quite a few uses. Although I don't use starter fluid, I'd say it lasts quite a bit longer than a bottle of fluid would from what I remember when I did. I can't say how it stacks up against the other grills in the test, but the range of optional accessories make the Weber very versatile. I recommend it highly. I did find mine slightly used on Craigslist, almost new condition and paid $150, it's worth looking there if you're interested.

I love my Weber! Far better than any other brand I've owned! Plus the stainless grate is great, especially in the humid climate of the gulf coast where I live. I've owned a grill with cast iron grates which rusted horribly with the constant humidity, not to mention it imparted a rusty iron flavor to food which was awful. Definitely loving my Weber! Plus, 3 years, NO rust!

i bought a cheapo Meco grill about 20 years ago for 30 dollars and the thing is still going, it has stood outside in all the elements, does everything i want it to do. i picked up a weber smokey joe last month at a garage sale for 5 dollars and i can see why people love them. they are a lot of fun and i probably will buy a bigger version at some point. my old meco is still kicking butt though.

I just got a perfomer grill and I must say it is spot on.I do alot of slow and low and this grill has performed up to speed.The best feature of this grill is that it can do it and do it well .I have several gas grills but they dont give the taste or attitude of charcoal. Oh yea I only use Stubbs coal as it has a unique flavor

A trend in a lot of these comment sections is that if one's choice didn't win, then that person says that the winner obviously paid for the result. What is the point of watching these videos if you aren't going to trust the results. I have had a Weber, that I picked up from a garage sale, for 10 years. It is incredible in almost all applications. This video confirmed what I already know. If she said another grill was better, would I go buy that grill? No, I love my Weber. But I wouldn't have said she was paid off, I would have thought that the grill she ended up recommending must be pretty awesome if it is better than my Weber. If you like your grill, great! But questioning the integrity of these videos proves you don't care about truth, you want to be validated for how you spend your money. It is pretty sad that you need to be validated if you like what you bought but are annoyed if someone else says something else is better. It is pretty pathetic actually.

No I don't agree. The webber is my favorite but this ad doesn't make sense... They don't say the names of the other brands, they say they compared a lot of stuff but never say how they ranked one towards another. The most important thing is that none of the grills received any grade. They don't even mention the other grills names I mean come on!

Agreed, Weber is the bomb. I just purchased a new Weber last season after my old 2nd hand one rusted out and at 54 years old I'd be about willing to bet that it'll still be around smoking up burgers long after I'm long gone from the face of this Earth. By the way, I always keep my Weber covered with an official Weber grill cover when it's on standby.

Cris Workizer I had a weber that my dad bought in 71' Had to replace it a few years ago. Comparing it to a new one is like comparing a beer can from 71'to a beer can today. They are not built to last even half as long. I still have the grill and specialty parts. Which are also a lot cheaper. As cheap as they have become they still are one of the best.

Nice advert for Weber! Sorry but I finally chosed a better one these Weber. It cost me EUR 329,00 and it is certainly cheaper in the US. I opted for a Napoleon PRO22K-LEG, and this was definitely the best choice I could make (cast iron cooking grids, and offset hinged lid to open the bowl makes it way more practical and performant to cook than any of the Webers shown here). Funny you didn't have this one your test.

Lots of people praise Weber and say nothing beats it. Don't know about that, but I got a Weber Onetouch as a gift and it is great. Has a feature where you can dump the ash in the kettle into the bucket with a lever, has some openings on the sides of the grates to add more charcoal and it works well for smoking meat. The only thing I would of liked is a side shelf and an easier way to move it other than the two wheels in the back.

I have the original version of the Weber Performer. It has a stainless steel table instead of plastic. (I guess Weber went to plastic to increase their margin) Part of the table lifts up to expose the gas igniter button and a deep plastic bin that holds a bag of charcoal. My wife bought it for my birthday maybe 10 or 15 years ago and I loved it then and I love it now. The gas starter combined with a charcoal chimney is the best.

I just got a Masterbuilt Pro 22" Kettle grill from home depot for $29.99. I was expecting very little from this grill because of the price, and I honestly LOVE IT. It cooks very well, and obviously did not break the bank. It was intended to be a hold me over grill until I could afford a nicer one, but I think I might just run with it. My only two complaints are it didn't have a temperature gauge and the grate was a single piece so adding more coals can be a pain. But I can upgrade both of them for cheap. I would put it up against the Webber any day!

I love my 22" weber kettle. I have grilled in it. Smoked brisket, ribs and pork butts. Reverse seared steaks. It really can do just about anything. It is great for a family. My advise is save the cash and get the weber for $150. You can buy a chimney for cheap and start your coals that way. Then get the slow-n-sear for less than $100 (not necessary, but makes it easier).

On the Weber grill the heat is mainly controlled by the vents on the bottom of the grill above the ash catcher, they may be opened or closed cutting off the airflow to the bottom of the coals. The vent on the top is mainly used to control the amount of smoke/heat retained in the grill.

Good video. My 24 YO standard Weber kettle is still rocking my slow smoked ribs and turkeys. After reviewing (online) many many grills/smokers I keep returning to the $99.00 weber 22". I have one that lasted for 18 years before I had to replace the vent fins (rust) and wheel locks with a $20.00 refurbish kit. I also added the grate with the movable ends so I can add coals to the "snake" during long smoking sessions. That same kettle is still in use 24 years after I purchased it..well I was lucky and didn't actually buy it..I actually won it in a drawing. :)

Excellent Review. I've been grilling since I could reach over my Dad's old Weber in the late 80s. Your criteria exactly matches mine. I was considering the PK and searched youtube for reviews and came here. Seeing that I couldn't fit a 14lb turkey in it broke my heart. With my price cap around $100, the Kingsford 24" is what I'm considering as my next grill. I have looked at your top pick but it's out of my range.

Got to say the performer is a great buy and bang for your buck.. I have had mine for 7 years.. Covered when not in use.. Has no rust outside the grate which I just replaced.. For basic grilling and offset cooking dose fantastic.. Even pork and beef ribs.. and the added bonus of being able to save on coal and wood. if the coals die you still got the gas.. plus to low and slow and you want the last few minute to get sauce extra sticky crank of the heat with the gas.. I have nothing but go things to say about the grill.. But at the end of the day it is a grill.. Not a smoker.. I am finally upgrading the XL BGE ready to up my game.. But I know I will still use the grill for quick cooks like burger and dogs, veggies and such.. while I am smoking my brisket for 12 hours

Yes...I was cheap and bought the original Weber..which I am so thrilled with but I ended up buying all this other stuff as 'add ons' which cost me the same in the end as the premo version that they recommend here. I am in Canada, so things are a bit more expensive here. The plain jane version that I got was about 140.00 CDN and the Master-Touch version free standing is currently selling for 279. CDN The one with all the bells and whistles that they recommend here is well over 500.00 CDN.

If you are going to be paying the $400 for their choice - I would suggest going a little higher in price and going with a Kamodo style grill. They are a lot more flexible IMO, better for indirect cooking and over the course of a few years would probably save you the difference of cost in charcoal usage. They are insanely efficient.

I prefer the Kingsford 32 inch charcoal grill, I have one and it's excellent. It has everything she described including a built in bottle opener.

Love the weber grills. I've used the table model and its a great grill. I believe they sell a rotisserie attachment as well.

Good on you for being choosy about your briquets, but I don't have any problem breaking up my charcoal for low and slow cooking. Plus anything left over can be dried out and used again. Real charcoal! The only way to go!

The Broil King gas grills do get much hotter than the Weber gas grills. Both are very nice, but the Broil King is hard to beat when wanting to get a good sear. The big issue with the Broil King is what you ran into, as they won't last as long without some maintenance and a good cover. You may want to look into the Napoleon Prestige gas grills as they get nice and hot, but also have an optional cast iron tray to cook charcoal as well as gas. For $899 you can get dual fuel and a great build!

Good review. It would've been nice to see a winner for multiple size grills. That Weber is great but I don't think it would be big enough to accommodate the large amounts of food I sometimes grill.

My recommendation would be the 19 inch weber. The 22 inch has too many hotspots and unless you have a giant crowd to cook go with it 19. I personally bought the portable 19 inch weber that you could store in a trunk and it lasted me well over 10 years of frequent use.

Please do a thorough review like this for expensive grill / bbq and a separate one for smoker. Some people myself included like out door cooking very much and are willing to take out a second mortgage for a grill. Thanks.

The Weber Master Touch has a hinged grate and charcoal holders that make adding coals a snap. Worth the extra few bucks it costs.
@jtjjbannie
@jtjjbannie 10 лет назад
I agree with the findings. The only thing I do not like about the Weber is the charcoal grate. The coals fall through long before they have burned completely and block the vent hole on the bottom. I fixed this problem by simply adding a round piece of expanded steel on top of it.

Yeah, the spacing of the bars seems to be a little too great. I use the Char-Basket briquette holders, and turn them so the slots in the bottoms are perpendicular to the bars of the grate. It works a lot better than putting the briquettes directly on the grate.

Yes, I believe Weber paid for this! I love the Classic PK grill, I own the one my Dad originally bought back in 1966 and is still going strong. I love it! I had to buy the grate and hinged grill which PK still sells for only 50 dollars. Again, I really love the PK grill... and I have no connection to Portable Kitchen.

Since 18yo to me being 50yo now, all I have ever owned is a Weber kettle. My 1st was the "Smokey Joe" at my apartment. I have tried to use gas grills and I do not like the way food comes out.

@@winddmmy Well pellet is not charcoal. I would say it's an hybrid. You got more convenience than charcoal, and it's more easy to use, but it's not as fast ready to grill as with gas. It is grilled with wood, so still better than gas, but you won't get the taste like grilled with charcoal.

I like Weber. At one time I had three grills at once: the Weber kettle, a Weber gas grill, and a Big Green Egg, the latter of which it would have interesting to see them test, but those grills are 200-300 dollars above the ATK pricing limit. (I later got rid of the gas grill.) The Big Green Egg does smoking vastly better than the Weber charcoal grill, but otherwise, I would prefer the Weber for quicker-cooking items like steaks, burgers, grilled chicken, vegetables--more surface area, which allows better for hot and cooler section of the grate, and the coals are closer to the grate with the Weber. But, if you want to smoke a brisket for 12 hours...

Thank you for this. I might suggest a tiny bit more in depth for fairness to some. I don't cook a turkey everyday. I have seen other sights give Weber the same big thumbs up. PK are very good as well so they should have had honorable mention even with a $340 price tag. Thanks for this though and for all your evaluations.

Although Weber makes a fine product I have a Weber "Go Anywhere" charcoal grill, which is a great small portable grill but they should have been fair and mentioned by name other brands and how they compare. My large grill is a 35 year old Char-Broil CB900 series charcoal grill, it is still going strong looking new even though I've used it thousands of times over the years. It's as solid as a M1 tank and I keep it well maintained. They still make it too as the CB940X same exact thing as my 35 year strong grill only they modified the cart part a little. So yeah in my many years experience you can't go wrong with either Weber or Char-Broil products.

OK, all the time I see that older Weber one touch, with the gas lighter system, on the show. But, they light charcoal with a chimney and newspaper. I've got the same grill, and use the propane lighter all the time, it works GREAT. I even used it to light charcoal, in a chimney, for my drum smoker. You guys have that technology, why not use it? steve

I was always taught not to completely trust the built in thermometer. I was told to always go external like they did in their test. Also, does the performer come with rubber handle on the vent. I have the 19in weber than doesn't come with the ash catcher. It also comes with no handle on the vent control you have to buy it separate. Other than that, my next purchase is probably either the hinged grate of 4-quarters iron grate
@MadOgre
@MadOgre 10 лет назад
Sounds like you bought a Weber One Touch Silver. The Gold is a worthy upgrade for the extra 50 bucks... The rubber on the vent is great, the thermostat is pretty accurate, but you'll still want a meat probe for that internal temp. But the Ash Catcher is worth the upgrade price alone.
