Fagor isn't what it used to be, sent mine back and got a Presto. Oh my gosh, I am so happy with it. Got the latest one. Customer support was really excellent when I had a question and you can get parts easily. I love the 6 quart, always had the 8 quart but the 6 quart is nice and straight and handles everything I used to put in the 8 quart. p.s. I always spray in the inside before I use it and after it is washed, I put a little olive oil on a paper towel and wipe it shiny. I just needed to share that for some reason.

So, based on ATK's advice, I bought the "Best Buy" Fagor Duo 8-quart when it went on sale for less than $100. I picked it up today, and I can hardly wait to start using it. A quick function test showed everything to be working correctly, and just about fool-proof to operate. I didn't see (or I forgot) that it includes a steamer basket and "trivet" to raise the basket above the water, and I suspect I'll be using that as often as anything else. Thanks ATK.

Thank you for the review. I was looking to buy one and knew I did not want it occupying the counter full time. I also wanted to use the pot for general non-pressure cooking. I settled on the Fissler which you mentioned came in number one in your test. I so much appreciate the no-nonsense review and element of science used in discussing the importance of achieving and maintaining pressure. This is the third product I've purchased based on your testing, in each case, I have been pleased with my (our) purchase decision. Thank you for the invaluable service. I'm a devoted admirer and would not consider buying something that was not on your list.

For most cooks the well priced American made Presto stainless steel pressure cooker works very well. It reaches the necessary 15psi and is cheaper than all others except maybe the Indian made cooker. My mother used a Canadian made aluminium 6 qt Presto for over 40 years. I recently replaced the seals and the pressure regulator which had developed legs and walked away and still use it for non acid foods.

The best pressure cookers are sold in Indian grocery stores and on Amazon. It's called "Prestige" and made of pure heavy stainless steel. I bought myn for $40. It makes "whistling" noises each time pressure is let out. Each dish has a specific number of these "whistles" before you turn off the stove. It is super handy and the quality is fantastic.

I had a Fagor and when I took the lid off, I tended to gently place it upside down on the counter. What else would one do with it? So in a month or so the knob broke off. I exchanged it for another one. Same thing happened! I will go with the Presto next time.

Don't know how I lived without this for so long! I make dog food for 2 of our dogs ru-vid.comUgkxG-7WiT7ocumjytOpHDFt632PL0pxXRAg (we have 5!) and it is so much quicker in this. Love having the inner pot stainless so I can use my immersion blender right in it without worrying about scratching. It makes potatoes great and fast! Still working on the vegetables, first time came out great, second time I did different ones and they were a little too mushy. Just need to adjust the time. I highly recommend this pot!!!

@wholeNwon
@wholeNwon 5 лет назад
Not at all. I've seen aluminum pressure canners on Amazon for very reasonable prices. If you're going to be doing any significant amount of canning, I'd recommend avoiding the very heavy aluminum models...usually without gaskets and multiple screw clamps. They take far too long for pressure to drop so your recycling times are very long. That's important. They are also very heavy.
@LaraineAnne
@LaraineAnne 8 лет назад
I bought the smallest Fagor Duo. I think that's 4 quarts. It was made in Spain. Many people consider this size useless, but they are wrong. If there are only two of you and/or you have arthritic hands you do NOT want to have to lift anything bigger. So take these facts into consideration. I consider a pressure cooker an absolute must for making soup. It is worth having a pressure cooker if you do nothing but make soup in it. Nothing makes soup stock like a pressure cooker. And once the vegetables are added it's only a matter of minutes and I have the most delicious soup imaginable. You can't buy canned soup that's even half as good as what you make yourself. Chicken soup and ciabatta bread for lunch anyone? :-)

@VeganPatriot
@VeganPatriot 8 лет назад
+Laraine Ann Barker I think smaller pressure cookers are great! They reach pressure really quick and therefore finish cooking much faster. I often use more than one pressure cooker at a time and if you are used to that kind of cooking it really helps to have different size pots

Laraine Anne Barker; I agree. I just purchased the 4 qt Fagor Elite pressure cooker and so far I love it! It's the perfect size for 2 people. has 2 pressure settings and I love how Fagor makes the 4 qt pots low and wide rather than tall and skinny. Very easy to use and wow, does it come to pressure fast! I have a 6 and 10 qt also which of course take longer to do this. I steamed baby potatoes in it in just 5 minutes. VERY useful in my kitchen! :)

@mellowman1001 Anybody who makes a pressure cooker explode either uses an aincent one from the 50s or doesnt know how to use it. End of story. They are incredibly simple. NO pressure cooker should be filled above the manufacturers recomedation (around 3/4). Since they all have redudnant safeties I can only guess the pot was filled too high for the type of food, the pressure bleed and safety became cloged with food and gunk, pressure was too high (should only need the absolutely lowest heat once at pressure) and she blew. No amount of safety engineering can overcome misuse.

Why bother? I have used stove top pressure cookers for over 60 years. You can't fix stupid. Don't blame the device for operator error. One time, in all the years that included many years in a commercial kitchen, did we ever have an incident. The safety features in the stove top pressure cooker worked perfectly. One of our employees over filled a bean recipe and the beans clogged the pressure regulator. The safety plug did what it is designed to do and we had a bean painted ceiling. Did not think it was funny at the time but my Dad and I still laugh at the mess it made. Can pressure cookers be dangerous? Only at the Boston Marathon.

Why wont my Fagor Duo pressurize!!? I got one for Christmas and it worked ok for a while but very hard to get it to pressurize. Not the gasket, it's the chincy plastic pressure control letting out too much steam. Finally it blew a hole through the handel when i tried holding it down to pressurize. Just try finding a replacement part! My last pressure cooker with the weight regulator was still going strong when the kids got me this new one. I unfortunately threw it out! arghh! Later I got my daughter a pressure cooker not realizing it was the same company as mine and the damn thing has not worked once right out of the box. Same issue wont pressurize.

Presto IMO makes the Best Pressure cooker, Mine was handed down to me from my mother 20 years ago and she had it for 30 years before that, 10 years before I was born. My wife bought a 22 Qt. pressure cooker from Presto for canning 3 months ago and it is the same quality as the one my Mother gave me. Very heavy gauge stainless steel and the seals are easy to find if you ever need to replace them. They aren't cheap the 22 Qt. I believe was just over 200 USD. But it will last a life time and then some they are the Lamborghini of pressure cooking.

Our family have used pressure cookers for 4 generations and currently have several stove-top models in various sizes and a few electrics that we use much less frequently. In fact, some lima bean soup is cooking in one now, as I type. That particular unit is from India (Manttra I think), was VERY inexpensive and has worked well for at least 14 years. I prefer units with a weight pressure regulator. There will be no variation in pressure as when a spring ages and they are very easy to adjust so that just a little steam escapes continuously....really fool-proof. Cleanup is easy, too, with no regulating device to disassemble. Obviously, for canning, the unit MUST reach a full 15psi. It's always best to use a cooker that is especially designed for pressure canning and to follow the latest DOA advice for food safety. There is absolutely no reason to spend a lot of money for a great pressure cooker and lots of reasons not to.

A pressure cooker makes intensely flavorful fast food. The most important rule to remember is to let it stop making noise before opening. You can speed up the cool down by putting it under running tap water but it must be quiet and cooled. My ex failed to follow those very simple instructions while I was still at the office. Bean Wallpaper. Har. But no one died, nothing went ballistic, no eyes were put out.

The 8 quart Presto is good, (I own one), but the stainless is a little thin and has a tendency to burn food on the bottom. With a Presto, you have to keep flame at medium when brining to pressure and at VERY low to keep at pressure or you'll burn thick sauces. I think the Fargor 8 quart is better as it uses thicker-gauge stainless steel.. The MIU 8 quart Professional is also wonderful and uses thicker gauge stainless than the Presto. Both the Fargor and MIU are about $40 more expensive, but they're worth just a little more money.

Hold on a second there, regarding your pressure cooker temperature readings. Did you test one cooker at a time or all at the same time? Gas pressure varies, and if you have a busy kitchen at your studio, people are turning burners on and off at various times thus affecting the heat source for each measurement.

They are meticulous about their testing.

It would be nice to see how the viking and the all clad hold up to the competition. Not sure if they were part of the test. I believe they are made in America also. Thanks, hoping to buy a pressure cooker soon!

I love All-Clad for frying or: (anything that lets food cook w/o stir / agitation/ boiling / etc), but I don't believe in sticking with it for all things.You're gonna pay more for the name if you go that route.

as far as small pressure cookers go,I always take mine camping as it cooks fast and since I'm usually cooking with firewood I gather it saves quite a bit of fuel...

Thank you for this great review! I'm considering either your first pick the Fissler VitaQuick or this new one by All-Clad that has others raving about it. What do you think of the new All-Clad PC8 Precision Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker Cookware in 8.4-Quart?

the one they recommended is the same one used by Everyday Food that Sarah Carey uses

So, since you brought it up, which one was the top model that was the only one that attained top pressure? You claim Fissler was your favorite, but was it also the top model? Also, do any of these come with canning inserts?

Yes, but you'd probably be better off with a cheap canner, such as Presto, that is designed specifically for canning. These usually have both weight regulators and gauges.

In Indian cooking there are many items that needs pressure cooker to be cooked. Indian used pressure cooker in their kitchen on daily basis. In this test they have not tested Indian cookers, they will be at the top of the list if tested. Like Hawkins 8L cooker can be used for life time no needs any experience to use.

Yes, but check the instructions. For example, the Fagor one states: NOTE TO ELECTRIC STOVE USERS Since the coils on an electric stove retain heat for a long time, food often becomes overcooked when the burner is turned down for simmering (when cooking time is started). To compensate for that, you have two options: more detail than can be posted here

I have had no problems. I use med to high heat to get pressure though I find it best to get your food cooking to a high simmer with the lid OFF. Then add the lid, heat to get to pressure and roll the temperature to the lowest setting on the large burner ring. The food cooks perfectly and I lose NO steam from my Fissler pressure cooker at 15 lbs pressure.

I purchased the fagor duo 8 quart after watching this video and doing some research. I cooked with it 7-8 times and now it doesn't hold pressure at the valve anymore. I've replaced the valve twice to see if it would fix the issue, and contacted Fagor. All they did was apologize and send another replacement valve, that still diddnt fix the issue. They are a waste of money long term, diddnt even last a year... My cheap aluminum presto lasted longer.....

A simple weight pressure regulator is best...fool-proof.

Cheap crap. Should have bought the Fissler. A THICK bottom that is the full with of the base, incredibly well built, super safe, cannot be opened till pressure iis zero. Worth the price. They guarantee that all parts (all seals wear) will be available for purchase for at least 10 years even if they discontinue any model. I have seen numerous complaints about Fagor. Sorry to say, you get what you pay for. The Fissler loses no steam vapor when set correctly.

Up until one year ago, I was still using my mother's 1950's aluminum pressure cooker. It made the most delicious stews and soups. I now have an electric and other than the ability to walk away, my 60 year old pressure cooker was infinitely better.
