Very good video... and helpful. I tore my Achilles two days ago and realize I have a long road ahead... but you have inspired me to keep my head up. I am 57 years old and never thought this would happen to me... I was foolish to be playing sports at my age. Anyway...

Rupture recovery is evolving fast. Ruptured my right April 2018 and got surgery. Ruptured my left June 2019 and didn’t. Was walking in my without crutches at 1 1/2 weeks, out of the boot at 6 weeks but started walking to washroom with no boot at 5 weeks. Was rock climbing with no boot at 8 weeks. Early mobility is huge now.

Yes, it was a full rupture. I’m 56 and my recover has been very good. I was rock climbing hard at 4 months and probably at 5 months allowing myself to fall from 12 ft onto mats again. Ruptured June 10 and I don’t even think about it any more. Just working on last 5% of strength.

I have ruptured my Achilles before, broken my ankle, sprained it really badly, so many times that I would bore you if I start telling you about all of them.... So all this has made me earn a whole lot of experience, also I have learned what is better and what is not worth it.... And trust me, the famous boot is NOT worth it.... You should DEMAND to get an actual cast, you still can and you're still on time to do it, trust me!! A cast is more comfortable, its custom made, its less heavy, it helps you heal better and faster, its best in all possible ways!!!

I like your video and I like the fact that you made it with the intention of helping other that might have to go through the same situation.... That's nice!! And that's why I would like to help you in any possible way that I can.... If you have any questions, doubts or concerns regarding your injury, please feel free to ask me at any point :) Best wishes :)

Hi Anita, Thanks for the comments. My doctor is following one of the latest protocols that are out there. The boot is widely used from the beginning for non-operative patients. Please check out the latest resources (studies) on achillesblog.com. Many patients that go operative are placed in a cast for couple of weeks before being placed in the boot. For non-ops both are used depending on injury and doctor/protocol used. The most important thing is plantar flexion position, which can be achieved by either. Happy healing!

Hi how did you clean your leg without taking your boot off same with the odour spray did you remove the boot im in the same position as you are and im finding your videos very helpfull cheers

Richard, my doc did not allow me to take the boot off for the shower(used a boot cover in the shower), but he said that while I am sitting, I can remove the boot carefully and clean it with wipes. I made sure to keep my foot in the same position as when it was in the boot while cleanin (toes pointing down). I was being careful doing it, so that I do not unintentionally move my foot up. At the same time I changed my sock and sprayed the boot. I did it every morning and that controlled the odor. I also never wore the boot without sock.

Now this is what I call a HUGE SHAME!! You seem to be a REALLY GOOD patient. I can tell that because on this video you show us how extremely careful you are with your injured leg and that you are following ALL doctor's instructions, because you REALLY want to heal well, of course.... And that's nice, that's very good!!! But the huge shame is that your doctor is an incompetent, because for an Achilles Tendon Rupture if you are really trying to avoid surgery, there is NOTHING like a cast, NOTHING!!! Please dont take me wrong, this is NOT your fault, I understand that perfectly. This is your doctor's fault, due to his wrong judgement, because those "Orthopedic Boots" are not even good at all, compared with an actual cast, which is what you should have gotten since the beginning.

Ruptured mine 5 days ago. Saw surgeon yesterday. Going non surgical. His suggested protocol. Cast for 2 weeks. Then boot for 6-8 weeks but he wants full weight bearing whilst in boot. He said for non surgery route it’s very important early to start weight bearing.
