You can hang out with the locals, but you need to know the language XD Hahaha Studying abroad is an amazing experience but you need to have some ambition before It's up to you, you need to decide will you spend time with internationals or not From my experience you can honestly do both but again, you need to speak the language Also its different to go on Erasmus and to study abroad with just local people Some people make student exchange just for partying, another to learn the culture Just because you ve chosen first it doesn't mean studying abroad is bad, you just made wrong choices and haven't prepared yourselve before

Is there anything else that I didn't cover that you think is relevant to mention?

I don’t know about other locals from my country, but i would personally be delighted to buddy up with some internationals

Hey Austin! I`m going to Marseille next year as an exchange student:) Could you give any tip about accommodation? Thanks for the great video!

Hi! I'm French, and I have one advice : ppl of Marseille talk really loud, don't be afraid they are not angry after you lmao And they have an accent who might be difficult to understand at the beginning, but it will be okay :) Sorry for my english, idk if I did well 😭

I'm facing all the problems that you listed but how to solve it with covid we don't even see the local students 😪

Ah, I see... that's difficult. Yeah, I imagine that COVID complicates things a lot more.

YEEES! I absolutely and totally agree with you! What's the point in your mobility if all the lessons are completely online and you are sitting in a dorm and, you know, "it is just me and my laptop here on this planet"..... it's so sad and mentally difficult.... :'(

Your list basically applies to what I was hoping to get out a student abroad, would you not recommend going?
@almostaustin

Oh, quite the contrary! I very highly recommend a study abroad. This video is largely for "expectation management" purposes. The critical positive benefits of a study abroad outweigh any con I mentioned - some examples 1) International Networking (If you branch out) 2) International Experience for Resume Building / Talking Point for Interview 3) Personal Joy and Fulfilment of Independence and World Travel 4) Passive/Active Learning about Foreign Culture / Way of Life in other Regions 5) Empathy Building (if you seek to observe and listen) 6) Global Context for Personal/Professional/Philosophical Perspective

Hey Austin, this Video is from summer 2019 but your room looks like the one you had as CBYX Exchange in 2015/16. is the Video that old or had you been with your former Host family again in 2019 ?

do you recommend big cities or smaller towns for Erasmus? Thanks!
@almostaustin
@almostaustin 2 года назад
This really depends on your goals. If you want to immerse yourself in the culture and learn the language, I believe a moderately small town is a good option - perhaps at a school with less international students. If you want the classic ERASMUS party and travel and meet lots of internationals... then a big city is the best option.
