Hours spent at the computer 3D modeling can be a literal pain. I'm testing out a variety of mice to see if any of them can alleviate that discomfort. I'll try two handheld trackball mice, a vertical mouse and, most novel of all, the SpaceMouse. These are products I purchased, not provided free or sponsored.

Trackball and SpaceMouse for me. I've used trackballs for more than 20 years and can say from that experience, the trackballs with bigger balls are better, and you can get excellent results with them once you learn how to use them better. The mouse I use today, not necc. the best, but a good combo of almost best plus available, is the Kensington Slimblade. The CST2545 trackball is also excellent, and the Microsoft Trackball Explorer is also great if you can find it.

The SpaceMouse thing looks pretty neat. I would probably try it if I did more 3D work. For what I do, I use a different setup. I have been using a Wacom tablet since the 90s and I love it. I have trained myself to use an additional mouse with my left hand, so I can switch back and forth as needed.

I've never tried a Wacom tablet, like the idea though. Yes, I did the same thing with training the left hand on the mouse. Miserably frustrating for a long while but worth it.

It takes a couple of hours to adjust to looking at the screen instead of at the pen. But once you get it, it's magic.

Thank you for this useful video! I would like to point out that if you continue to use your wrist to move the mouse (regular, vertical and 3D), especially if your wrist is resting on something, you will continue to experience wrist problems and pain, such as pinching of the ulnar nerve on the outer edge of the wrist where the end of the ulna (bone) is. The handheld option would certainly help with this although it seems you'll have to find a high-quality option. If you can find a trackball that offers enough precision, that would probably be a better choice for you - at least, that's my guess. Please let me know what you find out over time.

Logitech has a less bulky vertical mouse than that. I would also suggest trying their trackballs; those midair trackballs you showed are presentation wands with some emergency point and click functionality, not a mouse for production work. A proper thumb ball like an M570 or MX Ergo is much friendlier to the hand and much more precise. I'll warn you now, I find the MX Ergo to be a little large, and it would seem I have much bigger hands than you. I tend to use my SpaceMouse in one-to-one mode where my model moves in the direction I push the puck. Push it left, the model goes left, pull up, the model moves up, push forward, the model moves forward(zoom out) etc. I find it more intuitive that way. I have a SpaceMouse Pro, I find the built-in wrist rest and the extra buttons real handy. Fusion360 in particular has such sewage grade view controls that I just can't use it without a space mouse, and I don't think it should be legal to have a Geomagic Wrap workstation without one.

Hi Lindy, regarding to trackball. Try to use something serious like Kengsinton, Elecom, or Logitech. Not cheap china products. I'm personaly fan of improving human-computer interface. Because this concept (keyboard and one,single point device) is pretty old. And the that it is working doesnt mean that it is the best. I'm using trackball (Elecom HUGE) in work and mouse at home (Razer Naga). It's also interesting to use compbination like SpaceMouse with Wacom tablet. Or trackball with some marco oriented keyboard (Microsoft X6, or Razer Nostromo). I hope that in future will computer inferface envolve to products like Tobii Eyetracker and also more use of VR headsets.

I ran into this issue. I couldn't find a way to make hours modeling more comfortable, so I turned to outsourcing the design and modeling work. It's a big change mentally, because it's less "doing" and more planning and takes away some of the thrill and excitement of making something, but it works much better for my hands.
@LindyDesignLab
@LindyDesignLab 5 лет назад
That makes sense. It's crazy, the new problems created by things that solve problems.
@TruthWielders
@TruthWielders 3 месяца назад
Maybe worth exploring. The J-Tech palm rest raises your hand a bit, maybe sufficient to alleviate that other issue you're having with the height of your finger relative to the buttons. It also makes it easier for your thumb because you don't have to squeeze as hard, the light weight added by your wrist on the base helps steady it!. There is still some need for the thumb, but ever so lightly most of the time that its not an issue anymore. I have the same collection of devices, plus a few others like Lychee's pen mouse, the 3M ergonomic mouse and a few versions of the vertical solutions. I wish the webcam gaze trackers worked better. I want to check the hardware gaze trackers if they are any batter, That might be a topic for a further video ? Thanks

I created a little program called MyAlt for both Maya and Blender. It's purpose is to negate having to hold down any buttons (both for the keyboard and mouse) while doing standard orbit/tumble and pan operations. I love using it, but if you have a 3D mouse it may not be of use

Consider using a Logitech G13 keyboard to map a lot of your keyboard hotkeys and shortcuts to a more ergonomic setup, it also gives you access to a joystick for your left hand if you choose to use it, the G13 can be mapped anyway you want it to be. Then for your right hand you want to consider something like a Logitech G502 Proteus, it should be big enough to lessen cramping in your hands and you can change the weight of the mouse for your own preference (overall weight or front to back and you can map some of its buttons to specific hotkeys... with those two I got rid of a great deal of my wrist and hand fatigue from the hours I spend on my rig... hope this might help you in some way (side note... only one program to modify both peripherals....)

certainly not for everyone because of desk space and layout issues AND a relatively steep learning curve, but ALL of my wrist problems went away when I started using a pen tablet. OK, I do a lot of photoshop & graphic design work and I must admit it is frustrating to use in certain 3D softwares, but I'm considering to add a spacemouse to get a (close to) perfect combo. Using a pen, especially on large tablets, completely takes away any stress on my hand/forearm/thumb. I'd recommend it to anyone who's desk layout is compatible with a pen tablet.

my index finger on my mouse hand has been hurting for several years now. I played way too many games that involved a lot of clicking. For the past 3 years I've been using a gaming mouse and it's helped a little but i just recently noticed that the height of the mouse was a bit too high, causing my wrist to stretch more than it should be. so i just bought a lower profile mouse and it's working better so far

I used a trackball for years and liked it. The trick for accuracy is to have the sensitivity turned down and use flicks to get the ball to spin to cover the longer distance. However, it requires a high quality construction that will allow the ball to carry the momentum of the spin. My version had a grippy ball that sat on ball bearings and tiny rotating wheels to sense the movement. I'm guessing they use the laser mouse sensor now. Were those track balls really heavy? A good trackball should weigh about 300 grams.
@LindyDesignLab
@LindyDesignLab 5 лет назад
Makes sense. No these trackballs are inexpensive, very light, really more for travel and presentations. I hadn't ever tried one before.
@VicMorrowsGhost
@VicMorrowsGhost 5 лет назад
@@LindyDesignLab I actually really enjoined using a track ball. Probably not quite as accurate as a mouse but very comfortable. Being mechanical however, it wore out. One of my students uses a 3D mouse in 3DS Max and he loves it. He's used it for years though so he's very fast. I tried it and was struggling but I can see the advantage.
@LindyDesignLab
@LindyDesignLab 5 лет назад
@@VicMorrowsGhost A bit less accuracy would be worth it to work longer hours in comfort. Yeah, I'm definitely not fast on the 3D mouse yet, but it seems like it will be mindless with a bit of practice.
@jodroboxes
@jodroboxes 5 лет назад
@@LindyDesignLab I gotta say, i've been using a trackball for many years and i'm faster and more accurate than with a normal mouse. Never going back. You move the cursor out of the finger tips instead of the elbow, but it takes some getting used to. Avoid the thumb operated trackballs, they're no good.

Love the 3D mouse. When I'm not at my workstation, my secondary electronics workbench and need to make cad adjustments for a CNC cam job, I keep reaching for it with my left hand. Try the Microsoft optical mouse 500. It's smaller, lighter (wired, no batteries) and faster than most mice. Plus it fits the hand better. Also, try working with your elbows lower at a neutral position. If they're up high resting on the desk, the weight of your arm is putting pressure on your elbows and forearms. Your keyboard should be low enough that your hands are horizontal, again in a neutral position, not elevated.
@tampascan8731

logitech G500s is amazing. also try turning of mouse acceleration if you have it on, and find a sensitivity setting that doesn't require a lot of wrist movement. a smooth mousepad with near zero friction helps a ton. for the repetitive stuff, try finding a good midi controller (recommend midi fighter 3d) and set up a bunch of macros with bome midi translator.

I am totally limited, and the one mouse I could use, the red ball Logitech is only wired and seems to be discontinued. I need non-mobile, fingertip control, and not too wide. No one is filling this need, and my computing life is coming to an end because of it. Here are my needs (well served by the one I have). Small enough to use in bed (I can't sit at a desk). Trackball very responsive...when index starts to hurt, I can switch to middle or ring, or switch hands, though this never feels right. Support for wrist without clunky second piece. Mouse that has option to work wired (usb 1 and 2 and the new c), and wireless (with good signal). Four buttons and a scroll (which I don't have now) would be great. I use three computers. The constant change and obsoleting of tools that work is like being a contractor and told to change the hammer I use every couple of years. It is maddening, and a major anxiety producer that I had found a way to work with minimal pain and now there is no solution.

I use Logitech g pro x lite for CAD work. It is lightweight wireless gaming mouse but it works better that any trackballs or space mouses for CAD work. I fount space mouses and trackballs can be somehow useful for amateur user or low skill users or just for demonstration your 3D models because of it feels like they have more natural control, but a regular gaming mouse works better for professionals because of it has more precise control and unlimited speed so you can work faster once you gain skill.

I've been using a classic HP no scroll mouse with soft foam on top + compression gloves at this point. So, people, take care of your hand. Always give support for your wrist and if possible start right away to use the angled mouse.

Hey I'm three years late to the party, still I'm testing a vertical mouse which is more comfortable for the thumb. You can find it as " anker vertical mouse" or as "trust verto vertical mouse". It's cheap as well. 🤑

I bought 2 on eBay 40 each wireless 😁 one for home and work so my workflow stays consistent. Can you map the two buttons to escape and ctrl? I have an issue with the settings staying when I select the app again it shows they reset but as I’m using it the settings show they are in use.... How do you lock down settings?
@LindyDesignLab
@LindyDesignLab 5 лет назад
I set the buttons for each program individually by opening that application then bringing up the 3dconnexion properties window while that program was selected. Not sure why it wouldn't save your settings.

Do you have any super ergonomic tips to save my forearm mobility? I’m an accountant and have about 40 years left to go in the workforce, which means I’ll be clicking a mouse every day for that long since I’m an accountant. I already have mouse elbow and had to switch to a trackball to relieve the pain. I doubt that my fine motor control and overall hand mobility will last, but need to be able to rely on that to work.
@LindyDesignLab
@LindyDesignLab 4 года назад
Some extreme options would be compression gloves and elbow rests. The gloves will help if you ever get stiff fingers and mobile elbow rests can help prevent shoulder tension if you go back and forth between mouse and keyboard a lot. Otherwise, consider the dxt vertical mouse. I prefer the Kensington trackball, but if my forearm starts to hurt, that vertical mouse is the least strenuous mouse ever when used correctly. Good luck.

Now office ergonimics is a science in itself and it´s not possible to fix all the problems with a youtube comment but I´ll try to help as much as I can. First of all - your body is a complex system and not individual parts attached to each other. Although you feel pain in your mouse arm the problem may not be solely in the arm. Check your whole body posture to make sure it´s not the main cause. google some yourself and/or check these links for (not only) that: www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/adult-health/in-depth/office-ergonomics/art-20046169 ergo-plus.com/office-ergonomics-10-tips-to-help-you-avoid-fatigue/ Second - make sure you support your arm right. The fleshy part of your forearm close to the elbow is where you support your arm. Good way to do that easily is having a sort of cutout table. If the table surrounds you then you have plenty of room to rest your arms. I have a sort of ⟨ shape front side of a table that suits me perfectly. Third - AVOID working with your arm joints in odd angles. If your wrist is angled down or bent back it´s pinching your nerves and veins and causes carpal syndrome. Same goes for your elbow. If it´s at an acute angle you´re screwing up your nerves and veins there. Your hand shoud be tilted slightly up in the wrist and rotated slightly outwards. If you let your arm fall freely on the table it will sort of get in this natural position. Your elbow should be angled out and front from your shoulder and have an optuse angle. Raise your chair and get a deep enough table. In combination with raised monitor to eye level this sould get you a good posture overall. I personally also avoid wrist rests as in my case particularly they pinch my wrist (which causes carpal syndrome) when I´m not actively concentrating on using them right (which almost nobody does). If you support your arm correctly there´s no need for wrist rests as they are more of a last resort rather than ergonomic solution. The danger comes from a general misunderstanding of "wrist" rests. See this article for more information: lifehacker.com/wrist-rests-are-for-your-palms-not-your-wrists-1672756283 Fourth - Get a bigass bulky mouse. Your hands were designed some two milion years ago to hold two types of objects: branches some 3cm to 5cm in diameter and stones and fruit about the size of a coconut. Surely flat and sleek apple mice look neet but they don´t support any part of your hand and they put it in an unnatural position. I personally think vertical mice are an overkill but a mouse that tilts your hand a bit outward is a way to go. The goal is to get your hand in a natural position where it rests mainly on the fleshy pinky finger side of your hand. On this topic as well - set your pointer speed to fast and enhanced precision. You want to slide your arm around the table as little as possible so you don´t fillde the tendons, nerves and veins around too much. Last but not least - set an alarm to notify you every 25 minutes to get up from your chair and walk and stretch a bit. You can go full tomato method if you can but some of us don´t get away with 5 minte breaks :/ ... Apart from rebooting your brain, getting more energy and feeling altogether good about yourself, your body actually needs the muscle movement to help circulate the blood and lymph. And no, no oil or lotion can do that for you when you´re older. Use your body as it was built to be used - by moving it about in a natural way. Good thing to do is walk for a small glass of water in these breaks (drink it on the spot, not by sipping at the desk - this in turn relieves your kidneys). It keeps you hydrated and if you work in an office with other people (who are ignorant to ergonomics) it doesn´t look like you´re just fooling about ;)

I hear you. I have about 20 years left to go on my accounting career. Here are some suggestions: 1. Learn keyboard shortcuts for excel and all your accounting software 2. Consider using track ball instead of mouse for less forearm movement. 3. Remap your Caps Lock key to Left mouse click using Auto hot key. This will allow you to use right hand to move cursor and left hand for clicking. 4. Most keyboards have number pad on the right side so you have to extend your right arm to operate your mouse/ trackball. I find this is really tiring for my right hand and shoulder after full day at work. We need to start using left hand more - I highly recommend getting a left vertical mouse or trackball. You can also get ten-key-less keyboard and buy bluetooth number pad separately for the left hand use. This way you can keep using mouse/ trackball on the right side without having to extend your arm too far. My current set up is like this: Left hand - Ploopy left hand trackball mouse (for web browsing and going over PDF documents) Keyboard - Kinesis Advantage 2 (I developed terrible pain in both of my wrist recently so I ended up buying this keyboard. It was very expensive but this is for my livelihood.) Right hand - MS sculpt ergonomic mouse (for work that demands more precision such as excel or accounting software)

I want to replace my mouse at my workplace, and I'm trying to think out of the box; I'd like to have something that is comfortable to use, makes no RSI, and.. well, not out-of-this-world expensive. Try out a trackball. Not one of the presentation wands she used in the video, something like a Logitech M570. When you get used to them, they reduce the amount of work your right wrist does while pointing dramatically.

That airmouse looks like a cheaply manufactured emergency solution for navigating through powerpoint presentations. If you don't have athrosis just use a normal lightweight ambidexterous mouse thats small enough to easily rest in your hands without requiring a lot of force like logitech g305. And basically dont ever buy anything from Razer, unless your willig to sacrifice ergonomics for quickly accessable macro buttons. If you have a lack of space a trackball like Kensington Orbit or Logitech Trackman might also be a good solution.

A good chair an adjustable standing or sitting desk. I've tried all these devices they are neat but I'm about 80% faster with mouse and keyboard or keyboard and pen/display. Bad posture and weird angles of tension, your tiny mouse pad restricts how you can move to relieve repetitive tension. A lap top limits you to how you sit and veiw your work your stuck in the same terrible position all the time vesa mount and monitor is great.
