Watch Survivor Series 98. Best show Russo wrote and infinitely better than anything Bischoff could come up with in wcw. Beats anything they've done in the last 22 years on the Paul Levesque show too.

@@Rschr101 That was 26 years ago and it was easy being "edgy" in 1997/98 but it's not as easy anymore once you get used to see a million turns and throw in curse words. Russo hasn't written anything close to that and keep in mind that the actual say had McMahon. It's easy to come up with 100 ideas and let the boss make the decision but in WCW Russo had the responsibility to create and implement those ideas. But the question was about Russo's best WCW idea, not what his best idea ever was. And the only thing I can come up with was the Millionaire vs. Young blood storyline which they totally blew because they made the veterans become faces lmao Bischoff isn't any better creatively speaking but Russo is overrated.

@@martifrey3357"What do you think is Vince Russo's best idea?" That's literally the question that's being asked. And if you want to bring up Vince McMahon being in WWE overseeing Russo. Then the same should be used for his time in both WCW and TNA. Where he worked with Bischoff and later Jarrett. But people don't like to bring that up cause it ruins their narrative. Which is to put all creative failure solely on Russo. While wanting to give others credit for his good ideas.

No, the problem was WCW Corporate demanded instant results, expecting Bischoff, Russo, Sullivan etc to be able to walk in and clean up a decade of Ted Turners mountain of mistakes and mismanagement in 6-8 weeks. The reality and brutally honest truth? If Time Warner was serious about rebuilding WCW and keeping it, which they weren't, or eventually selling it to a wealthy investor? WCW had to bottom out. There was no other way. WCW had to start one by one phasing out and releasing all of the once big names from their contracts and then spent 18-24 months building an entirely new product with entirely new stars. Vince Russo understood this and in fact said it during an interview with WCW's website. Instead Time Warner wanted WCW turning a profit, selling out arenas ans doing 5's in the ratings again in two months time and everyone hired for the position had to try and fast track a two year process into a two month process.

@@I_Am_The_Social_Reject At least McMahon grew up in the business though, I'm not defending booking himself to win 2 World Titles whatsoever but Russo came in with zero experience whatsoever and had a lot of bad ideas that were either heavily filtered to be at least palatable or outright rejected because they sucked so much and then jumped over to the sinking ship that was WCW and tried shoving all those terrible concepts down everyone's throats to the point where even a magnet wouldn't have been able to save it from going under. Both Arquette and even Russo himself winning the World Title and playing hot potato with it for pretty much the whole of 2000 helped accelerate their demise, yes I appreciate that he put a bigger spotlight on the talent lower on the card and gave Booker T the main event spot he already deserved at that point but besides that, he did nothing good for WCW even if it was so far gone that he wouldn't have been able to save it regardless of what he did anyway.

I disagree on the denial of bad ideas. He has criticized his own crap. However, his "but" is that the results do reflect that the "hum" periods, seem to get filled by the "stupid ideas." I dunno if that makes sense. Like the pole matches seem to be born of "running out of ideas, and throwing what doesn't work at the wall, to see if they stick" those get the reactions.

Yeah you're right. In hindsight Russo does call out his own stuff at times. Still, at the end of the day he was booking when WWF was at its hottest, he improved WCW's ratings for a time and he was a huge part of TNA's success in the 2000s. There's no denying Russo has had awful ideas but he's been a typically been a net positive to every company he's been with. He's probably one of the most thankless and overlooked guys in wrestling history.

He seemed good at making the underneath guys more entertaining, but I don't think he knew how to make money matches that people would be willing to pay to see. Take the stuff with the nWo or the Bloodline. I couldn't see that ever coming out of Russo.
@DuxyVargol
@DuxyVargol 4 месяца назад
Maybe he didn't like Booker T as champion, so for him it wasn't a good idea. What I've understood about Vince Russo is that he actually is a writer that needs a booker over him. He has ideas for guys, lots of them, but he doesn't know how to take them and use them to make money. Russo seems to work best as the guy in your creative team that when you ask for stuff for people to do, he'll give you 100's of things that these people could do, and so you pick the ones you want and use them to get people to pay for a match in a PPV. As long as a booker chooses who the guys are and what ideas to use, I think that Russo can make some contributions, probably even today. But he doesn't work as well as a booker because he doesn't know how to get his ideas to a place where people would pay a ticket or buy a PPV.

Now I'm not in the business and thus I shouldn't really be saying something like this but Russo saying the whole Bloodline story is bad just proves that he knows absolutely nothing about what makes for good storytelling in wrestling, his poor track record alone tells people that no one should listen to him. That story has been the best thing in WWE in over a decade by a country mile and it's no surprise that the guy who put someone's mother on a forklift and made a match about her wouldn't be able to tell what's a good story and what isn't if you shoved it in his face, sure he was okay in TNA but that's only because Jeff Jarrett didn't want to let him ruin his new company before it could even get off the ground by letting him book the shows.

I can name many; He pushed guys like Booker T and Jeff Jarrett who were younger than the veterans and deserved a shot in the main events He pushed Scott Steiner as a mega heel who just went nuts on anyone, this was the correct way to use Scotty Steiner instead of a background character to Hogan. He attempted to use younger talents and the NBT group was awesome. He turned Goldberg heel. People will totally disagree with me here but Goldberg was getting stale and fans were giving him either mixed reactions or mostly bad ones. The execution wasn’t great but the concept was and if Goldberg weren’t such a mark for himself and had he embraced the turn, it could’ve been a thousand times better than it was. I think highly of Eric Bischoff and he did a lot of great things in WCW but he also came with his own baggage of negatives too. He let the veterans stay on top so long they became toxic to the brand and the nWo that saved WCW also ended up partly to blame for killing it. Eric doesn’t wanna credit Russo for anything positive he did but if you’d taken Russo’s positives with Eric’s, you’d have likely gotten the exact competition for WWF/WWE’s product that WCW needed to be. Vince Russo wrote Raw during its most explosive growth in viewership ever. He was head writer of WWF, WCW, and TNA, and never left a promotion with lower ratings than he inherited. Top stars like The Rock, Steve Austin, Mick Foley, Kurt Angle, and Shawn Michaels will talk fondly of working with him and celebrate his contribution to the business. Then you get clowns who only ever want to talk about half a dozen Pole match he booked, how stupid all of his ideas were, and how he killed the wrestling business, and they get confused about why he doesn't want to engage with them? Wild.

Eric can accept it as he was not A BOOKER per se (his words) or a writer. He was an Executive who was very creative and surrounded himself with guys like Kevin Sullivan who were great. Unfortunately, WCW had too many "Big Names" with "Creative Control" that coveted their "Spots" over what was Best For Business. it was no one thing with WCW, it was just a whole bunch of things. Part of it was always approach. The WWE conceipt was always Wrestling as a TV show, the Crocket/NWA to WCW was lets televise wrestling, i know that sounds the same, but its not. Bringing in Hogan and Macho, and then Hall and Nash and the nWo was a solid idea, but they over did it with too many stars. Rick Rude? Just to stand around? How many matches did Perfect have? What was the point of Virgil? Giving hogan creative control was a collosal mistake. The most favored nation status in Hall's contract was also a stupid idea. That being said. There are a lot of moving parts there, and there was a lot that was a problem with WCW. The biggest issue was the WCW Model and vision in Ted Turners mind had a shelf life, and was destined to fail. Let's go back in history. Ted Turner didn't buy JCP because he "loved pro rasslin and dreamed of being a promoter." Back in the 1980's Ted Turner decided he wanted to own the WWF as part of his portfolio and bragging rights, so he approached Vince and told him he wanted to buy the WWF. Vince told him no, he wasn't interested in that. JCP was bought and WCW existed as a personal vendetta between Turner and McMahon. The fact that for the firs time in Turners career someone told him no ate him alive. It was his personal mission and obsession to put the WWF put of business. That was the whole platform. That was the every day end goal. This put Eric Bischoff as well as later Vince Russo in no win situations. Marks on the internet shit on Bischoff every chance they get, but the reality is Ted Turner didn't hire Bischoff and go "Eric, I want you to make me a good product that turns a nice profit." He hired Bischoff and said "Eric, go put that Vince asshole out of business." Unfortunately the only way to have done that was pay far more than Vince paid to poach big nesz then sign as much of the talent available out there as possible and hope it holds out long enough that you hit your goal and kill off the other guys business before you have too big of a mess to clean up. Vince Russo inherited Ted Turners mess. Just like with Bischoff, Russo wasn't told by Time Warner Execs who were now in charge of the mess Turner made, "Vince, scrap everything and rebuild it from scratch over the next two years." He was hired and told "turn this mess around in the next few months or we'll hire someone else." The Meltzer and Alvarez as well as McMahon revisionist history that is parrotted regarding WCW is irritating as fuck at this point.
