To me William/Steven Regal is probably the most underrated, over-looked wrestler. Very sound and Entertaining in the ring. And on the mic. Since we're talking bout Finlay too, I would pay to see those two wrestle today.
I was one of those rare fans that showed up for, among others, Regal and Finlay. They represent wrestling to me far more than many of the more recognizable stars.
Not just in the ring too. His comedy, facial expressions, laughing at himself etc. He was one of those guys who could play entertaining characters and was always happy to make people laugh. It's a shame he had his drug issues if he was clean his whole career he definitely could have been a WWF champion at least once.
Terry Taylor was a hell of a wrestler who honestly got held back from the top spot because of his lack of height and then his subsequent drinking as a result of being disgruntled with how he was being used. It's a shame, too, because in his prime he was as good as they come.

To many people that fit that description at that time that were already at the top. Red rooster was horrible but you need diversity in what their face looks like as well. Can't have to many people looking the same and his own natural look was already way oversaturated.
SO glad to see Eric defending Regal here. I've always been on the side of Regal on this. He's always been consistent with his telling of the story, there's no reason in my mind to dispute it. He was told to have a "competitive" match, and not much else. It was WCW's fault that they didn't walk through the match, which thankfully Eric talks about here.
I always thought Regal and Eric were pretty close, and Regal always spoke well of Eric, as a Brit I do love Regal, great guy, double tough and great chain wrestler 👍🇬🇧👍🇬🇧
Regal did nothing wrong. If he wanted to he could have made Goldberg look completely stupid. U can quite clearly see in the match Regal feeding Goldberg waiting for Goldberg to do something and he doesn't do anything. Regal didn't take liberties he was just in the ring with someone who had no idea what to do when he couldn't just squash an opponent.
To me, it sounds like someone got in Goldberg's head and put an idea in his head that mutated into this guy fucked me over, fuck this guy. In reality, Goldberg is an attraction, not a professional wrestler. He eventually got to the point he could have a long match, but he did stupid crap like knocking himself out in a match with DDP or smashing a limo window and hurting himself. He was a rookie. If he came up in WWE, with the same push and buzz, this wouldn't be an issue.
Watching on TV at least, the commentators built up a narrative that worked well for the match so it all made sense. I would have never noticed anything was off.
Regal makes me think about something that doesn't get talked about much in wrestling and that's how in both WCW and WWF in the 90s that even guys with a mid-card ceiling or at least occupied a mid-card spot for a long time were as important to the show and memorable as some of the bigger stars in some way or another which is starkly different in the industry today as opposed to back then. Regal was so great in his role even though you could argue he never climbed above mid-card at any point. Regal's career as a whole is comparable to Jericho in WCW where he was mid-card yet felt more important and entertaining than what he was being presented.
I think what it is that being a midcard isn't bad at all, like how people wanted to put it. Nowadays, if a wrestler stays a mid card for more than 3 years. It is considered a disgrace. But back in the 80's to early 90's, a mid card was just as important as a main eventer. Things started to change when the NWO formed and the Goldberg undefeated streak. Those two things really helped devalue the midcard spot. The top guys from the NWO and WCW didn't want to work with the midcard talents, and Goldberg buried them by defeating them between a couple of seconds to 3 mins. WWE were still using that same formula that the midcard was worth something.
@philliplandry4139 i would argue the midcard is even more important. A solid midcard will sell payperviews foe a lot of people. However, you need good midcarders like regal, not glorified jobbers like gunther
Very true while everyone wants to be the mainevent there are plenty of spots on the card that are critical to keeping the machine going. From a television point of view when characters like Regal, Guerrero, Beniot, Jericho, etc when the solid foundation of workers who could get anyone over started to move to WWE you say the cracks in the product big time.

Natural reactions look better to us than a lot of the phony motions they go through. The problem is that some of those moves don't look as good realistically. Pros see that more clearly than we can.
In some ways I think it helped Goldberg. He was squashing everybody and people were starting to get suspicious that this was all his matches were going to be. But this match helped show that he can win hard fought matches, even if in retrospect it looks awful with all the broken kayfabe around.
I wanted to say the same thing. Back in the day when I saw this live on TV, all I remember thinking was "oh good, it's a real match." I didn't see Goldberg as exposed. If anything I thought that it was good Goldberg could wrestle in real matches where someone hits him and not just squash everyone. All we really cared about when Goldberg was getting over was the spear and finish. It didn't matter how long it took to get there.
This is a great conversation because Bischoff also explains why WCW had so many production miscues. They never really had the wrestlers on the same page with the director in the truck, so certain big moments in matches would be missed
No, it's horrible. It should be him saying he messed up. But he never takes responsibility. Just like the question of who killed WCW, it was Bishof, cause he mismanaged it.
Am I the only one who has never seen anything wrong with this match and still don't get the big deal? I mean, wrestling matches, mma fights, and sports competitions don't always look overly refined... and I like that. Am I the only one?
I'm with you... I saw it like I saw the Regal v Van Dan match. Two different styles coming together. I made this comment on another post too : I saw it as Goldberg eventually overcoming Regal's unique wrestling style. I loved the match.
it was mainly that if you had seen enough wrestling. you could tell Goldberg was like a dead stick. He didn't know how to react to any of the moves Regal was doing. Because all he had done was quick brawl squashes. It was like what Bischoff was saying. The main mistake made was booking him with a technical wrestler like Regal be fore he was ready. Goldberg should have been sent to the power plant on weekends to train with Arn and whoever else that could teach him how to work properly and let him develop those skills then he could work with guys like Regal. I never held it as a huge deal like some. but the match wasn't good. It also wasn't the worst thing ever saw either because Regal did the best he could with it.
The fact that this is still a 'thing' in wrestling history is a bit silly. It should have been as simple as Eric saying "Yep, my bad - we wanted to push Bill toward longer matches because he couldn't just keep steamrolling everybody, but we asked for too much, too soon from Bill - and it backfired."
The traditional telling of the story from Regal is that he was told by the agent (Believed to be Terry Taylor) to have a six minute competitive match. When things went wrong, Bischoff got hot at Regal, Taylor got quiet and Regal wouldn’t give up Taylor. Even though it was mainly Taylor’s fault and he knew it.

Instead of just standing there Goldberg could have instead, you know, hit back. As Regal said about the match "I can't hit myself". Regal gave Goldberg lots of easy counters and Goldberg would just stand there doing nothing, so Regal ended up going on a pretty relentless offense
The match was great for Goldberg. It showed he wasn’t invincible, but could overcome an obstacle like Regal. It was a good way of showing weakness of sorts for Goldberg. Regal sure as hell wasn’t going to do anything he wasn’t told to. Regal could have a match with a broom.
In real time I absolutely thought the same. I enjoyed the match. It helped on realism, as sometimes somebody just has your number on a given night. Or has a style a green wrestler might not have encountered, or maybe Regal just did some good scouting to keep it actually competitive. I thought it was great, subtle storytelling--something unfortunately in short supply in wrestling, most of the time.
it doesnt matter if it looked ok, it goes against what the company wanted and was done to expose their future star, vince mcmahon would have done the same, he yells at people for much less imagine what he would have done if someone tried to sabotage his future star if regal doesn't know that wcw doesn't want their future star exposed then he should be fired because he didn't know
I watched this match live and never thought twice about it. They make such a big deal about it. Regal gave Goldberg a challenge but Goldberg still won. The end.

I think this match was refreshing! I was getting tired of seeing Goldberg crush his opponents. We thought Regal was going to get crushed in this match and at one point we thought Regal had a slight chance of winning and that's what kept me watching. Eric says all the time that he wanted the show to be full of surprises with unforeseen events… well, there it is! Why does no one thought to make a story out of this situation? It would have been captivating! Salutations a tous!

Watch the interview with Stevie Ray, who says "we all knew that Regal was going to do this". Regal didn't want to be a chump on the end of a squash match and instead of making Goldberg looking strong, he almost immediately reverses every one of Bill's moves. Bill follows as best that he can, but it exposes the fact Bill can't do a traditional wrestling match and over-relied on a chain of power moves.
What I’m not understanding is WHY Bill didn’t train more and during his stint in WCW? Like was he just egotistically deny that he wasn’t a good wrestler out the gate, or did he have too many yes men around him saying it wasn’t needed? Or both? We may never know the truth, but with the proper training and being humbled in some way, I don’t think anyone could’ve denied that Goldberg could’ve not just been good, but GREAT! Kind of sad man.

But I imagine Hogan had a hand for that old school protect your character at all costs especially if you're on top. You put that together with a very competitive individual which Bill was and it pretty much created a monster of a human to deal with. Bill away from the industry is a great person in the business there is a mountain if evidence he can be a Godzilla level monster.
It was the match that needed to happen for Goldberg at that time. Bischoff was pissed because it exposed Goldberg's weaknesses EVERY fan knows that Regal had far too much experience to not find and exploit his opponent's weaknesses.

I remember watching the Goldberg vs Regal match and knowing something was off, but couldn't figure out what exactly. They just seemed not to be clicking during the transitions.
The thing that's in nobody's version of the story except Goldberg's, is the no-sells. Regal No-sold quite a few moves, so it's unfair to say Goldberg refused to fight back. I think it's all a lot of fuss about nothing. The match has a nice flow and tells a nice story. It's supposed to be Goldberg's first time trying to figure out a technical wrestler. The fans knew Goldberg was inexperienced. The announcers mentioned it quite a lot.
I was like 14 when this match happened . Watched it live . I thought it made goldberg look even tougher . Dude took a butt whipping and that jackhammer looked like he dead lifted him

Whats so funny is that this was ONLY a big deal behind the scenes. Bill I'm sure was embarrassed in front of "the boys", but I guarantee the only thing fans watching cared about at the time was the finish, which left every one of them happy.

Is it just me, or did this match only highlight how much of a beast Goldberg was? Regal was right there with Henning when it came to who he could defeat. When Regal walked out, I actually thought it might be the end of Goldberg's streak. The way the match played out lent itself to such a narrative and when Goldberg dropped Regal with the Jackhammer, I was a believer in Goldberg afterward.
Regal put on the right kind of match. Realistically bill is power regal is technical. It would be bills kryptonite. Problem is Goldberg should have stll been training at the power plant not on TV.
I think Eric owes Regal a public apology because he did all he could to get Goldberg over and Goldberg fucked it up. The agent in the match should have been fired and Goldberg should have been suspended.
The thing that has been left out by Eric is that, while he touched on the fact that Steve Regal was from the old school of thought that the heel leads a match. He DID say that Regal was the more experienced of the two and that he was expected to lead the match, but the problem was that Goldberg was never taught how to FOLLOW a match. Not Goldberg's fault, not Regal's, thr management's fault.

It's funny how the people involved, don't want to name the agent. The agent screwed up, and people should name names. The match happened almost 25 years ago, just name the guy and move on. I get that Regal and Bischoff both want to be professional but none of this was their fault. They just need to name the guy so that guy can give his side of the story.

“Steve Regal does not lie. That I’m 100% confident in.” That is the most beautiful thing one man has ever said about another. That is something to strive for in both sides. Everyone should strive to have someone in their life that they know will not lie to them, and everyone should strive to be the Steve Regal in someone else’s story.

This match wasn't horrible. I watched it live that night and it was a good match. Only after all these years and hearing the shoot interviews and re-watching it could I see the flubs.
Regal had a match against then Rey Mysterio Jr that should be the definitive master class in being a heel. He had this group of guys in first row frothing mad as he jibbed back at them throughout the whole match. Which was the perfect distraction/sell of a near win for Rey for the TV title. Classic, for all the shit talked about WCW at 45 I still look up some of those old matches and series for the best.
that was actually a decent match; I have no problems with anything that happened. Regal was told to make this last 6 minutes and that's exactly what he did. William Regal is one of the best pure wrestlers of all time, deserves to be in the HOF.
Seems like Conrad was wondering why the "unnamed agent" has to remain "unnamed" after 25 plus years since this incident. Instead of answering that question, Eric "misunderstands" and answers a totally different (non-asked) question of why Regal would "still care" about this match after all this time. Instead of clarifying his question (why the "unnamed agent" remains "unnamed"), Conrad allows Bischoff to rant about the non-asked question. This has been a recurring problem with AD FREE SHOWS. A hot question is asked, the show's star either legit misunderstands the question or "pretends to misunderstand" and gives an answer to a related - but different - question. Conrad rarely interrupts and says, "OK, you misunderstood me. What I'm actually asking is , Why does the AGENT have to remain unnamed after all this time?, not why is Regal still cross about it." So an attuned audience member picks up on the fact that the "real question" never got answered (or blatantly got dodged), but for the sake of "nice-nice" we just move on. So we don't really get much further into the truth of these matters than we did with Sean Oliver 15 years ago or RF Video 20 years ago.

I thought the match made Goldberg look kind of like he knew what he was doing. It looked like he was countering a lot of Regals wrestling holds. This match didn't hurt him any.

From 98-99. I was with a lot of fans where Goldberg was concerned. My first issue with him was the heat he was catching from the veterans (Everyone's story about Jericho and him), second issue was his first run with the WWE, what made me turn on him was the match with the Fiend,"...don't think I should lose...". I was done with him at that moment but what made me utterly hate him? His spouting off about Bret Hart (who I was never a fan of-personally I always thought his matches were boring at best despite his incredible skills). Goldberg bough this own hype as if he was LITERALLY 173-0 like it was the UFC.

I always felt this was the best match Goldberg ever had. This is where the fake news internet community comes in. They have been trying to rewrite history when it comes to this match. The HBK Hogan match (which I also felt was Hogan's best match ever & even JR was quoted at the time as saying it was Hogan's best match ever). That was the prevailing opinion in 2005-2010. Then somewhere along the line, it magically changed after Hogan & TNA came around & he had bad press. There are a few other moments in history getting rewritten as well but obviously I can go through them all. WrestleMania X7 vs X8 Hogan vs Rock storyline. Sean O'Hare push. WrestleMania 39 already being forgotten as to how good it was in favor of 40 due to everyone wanting to push the HHH era despite 39 being superior to 40 in every single way. Most of the PG era being pushed as better than it was. The Ruthless Aggression era being considered "good" when in fact it was the era that lost 75% of wrestling viewership. HBK & Roman Reigns being the 2 lowest drawing Champions ever & the 2 most hated Champions ever. Those are just to name a few.
Love Bischoff's podcast, the most honest of the bunch. He's the only 1 who ever takes responsibility and says, my fault I should have done things differently

Kevin sullivans shoot interview of this match where he said and was not 100% certain but thinks Mike Grahem was the Agent at this time is The closest we have got to this supposed "Booker/Agent both William Regal and Bish keep non disclosed - makes sense when both say "out of respect" thus Mike Grahem going through the personal issues that led up to his suicide - although the only contradictive of this is a latter youshoot interview with Regal he claimed the guy knew who he was and should or has yet to come forward "post" Mike Grahems death which would make the presumtion that the agent in all this is still with us???
Well, first of all... it never should have ever gotten to that point. Bill should have been trained to be able to do a baseline 5 minute match from day 1. Period.
When WCW was at its peak, Bill Goldberg got more pop than a fleet of diabetic kids. You may not like his brand of whiskey but it was electric as anything on TV at the time.
Goldberg was already getting booed while WCW was at its peak. People look back and say Nash wasn't the right choice to beat him....but the pop the crowd gave, even with the ridiculous ending, when Nash pinned him was huge. Arenas literally chanting Goldberg sucks when he'd come out.
In the microcosm of the one match, yeah, blame the agent. Greater truth is, Goldberg should have spent more time training in the art of Pro Wrestling before he made the main roster. Pushed too far, too fast. Period. I will always put the blame on whoever decided to put Bill on TV before he was ready.
After seeing how vulnerable Goldberg was, they should have put him under a mask, dressed like the Assassin, and had him go out to all of the house shows and learn how to work and sell. They could have had him do his tv routine and still promote him.
i've never seen goldberg doing more than 3 moves, Clothesline, Spear, Jackhammer, done, that's not a wrestler, yeah he has the most powerfull spear in the business, but even Rhyno Gore looks better and i guess it doesn't hurt as much, Goldberg didn't give a fuck if he hurted you or not. He was lucky Regal didn't go off script and teach his ass a lesson. Specially if it was a Prime Regal. or got in the ring with Hardcore Holly, that guy would teach him a thing or two too.
You’ll be surprised how many moves he had in his prime. Gorilla press shoulder slam, gorilla press spear, gorilla press drop, knee lock, super kick, modified hip toss, spinebuster, pump handle toss
Goldberg's spear generally sucked. Too many times he would charge his opponent, stop right before hitting them, pick them up and put them down. Edge's spears, in terms of delivery, were much better because he looked like he was actually trying to drive himself through his opponent. Bill was convinced early on that he didn't have to learn any other moves or, more importantly, how to protect his opponent in the ring. We see how that turned out.
The main problem is Goldberg wasn’t ready for a 6 minute match. He needed a few 3 minute matches, maybe some gimmicky handi-cap matches that made him look strong, but also slowly added different skills to his repertoire.
One thing i could be remembering wrong. Was this originally booked as a typical Goldberg squash, but Hugh Morrus got hurt in the opening bout of the show?
