the cat, rewatching this video again, I can see the back of our heads right when Clapton plays the opening notes of “Layla”, right around 0:49. That was my favorite Clapton song (still is), and I remember going completely apeshit at that moment. He had a lot of new music out around that time, and I didn’t dare hope for this one.

Phil Collins had performed in London earlier in the day, then took a helicopter to Heathrow and there the Concorde to US. Before he started his solo set he said "I was in England this afternoon. Funny old world, innit?" He also played drums for over 15 minutes while Clapton performed. All those artists deserve the best, they give themselves completely. Loads of Love to them and to you all.

His voice is still there, although not as "strong" and he still "sings" music from his guitar. I saw him down in Texas like 20 years ago. 1999 I believe. He was fabulous. But that would have made him 54. I was going strong at age 54, even 64. But I just turned 65. And for the first time in my life, I can physically feel the difference. I still go 90 mph but the next morning, I hurt like hell the first couple of hours. Then I go like I'm 21! Knowing I'll pay for it the next day. But it's worth it. Much admiration for him! @@dethmaul I'm gonna go with attention whore here. I wasn't old enough to really experience the '80s (born in '87), but for some reason, it seems like Phil Collins was the only drummer people had heard of (even though he was more of a singer by that point). Whenever you see clips of any sort of '80s collaboration (Live Aid, that _Do They Know It's Christmas?_ song, etc.), they always seem to have Phil Collins playing some extremely simple beat, followed by some simple tom fills (banging them as hard as he can). Surely there were better drummers around. I don't know why Eric Clapton couldn't have just used his own drummer.

Fun fact, Eric was extremely nervous and uncomfortable about this performance because they were going after guys like Elton John and David Bowie and didn't feel they deserved to be there, they also had an extremely short time to rehearse and upon arriving learned the they did not have the sound equipment they had asked for. Amps, monitors, board, pianos, microphones etc were all the wrong models... The only thing that they had right were the guitars, and that's because they brought those themselves

He loved the look and loved clothes so much that he purchased a clothing store. A man of many talents. All of the rock gods back in the 80s dressed in suits--Mark Knopfler did in his concert with Clapton. Bowie & Phil Collins as well. Some of the best music ever! Great concerts. Then Eric hit the chords for Layla and I have to tell you it was the most incredible feeling, it was absolutely physical. The shouting and the clapping pushed us all backwards about 3 steps. When I moved up to the microphone to sing the first line of “White Room,” I got a great big shock off it, further unnerving me, and meaning that I had to sing the rest of the show with my mouth not quite touching the mike, but still close enough to hear myself, since the monitors weren’t very good. We played two more songs, “She’s Waiting,” a song from Behind the Sun, and “Layla,” and then we were off and it was all over. Phil Collins came on, followed by Led Zeppelin, then Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. After that I remember very little other than being herded back onstage at the end to join in the finale, singing “We Are the World.” I think I was just in a state of shock." E.C.

OMG ..............1985..........Eric playing lead, Donald 'Duck' Dunn on bass & Phil on the drums, it just did not get any better. Not only a great live song, great Concert ....But a great time to be alive. Life was just so much simpler.............people talked 1-1 not via text or cell phones. Our greatest question was .....what would be No 1 on Casey Kasem's weekly countdown??? Loves lost and opportunities not taken .......all things that we reminisce about BUT we wouldn't have changed it for the world. It was the best of times, the worst of times .......But, no doubt, it was the best time to be alive....... An era of the greatest bands Ever, we were so spoilt. But most importantly, we were privileged to live at a time when there was respect, love, old fashioned values and dreams to be made. I miss those days of simplicity.......what a better world this would be, if we could turn back the clock!!!! Much love & respect, Jim (New Zealand)
