I think because the public doesn't know the specific details, we're left with having a general opinion, which are hot-button based. Most of us don't like unfair strongarm tactics. Dickerson coming on the show cleared some things up so I think the public can be a bit less emotional and more objective. Because the NFL is a "private" entity and not governmental, we should take a step back and let y'all work out the fine print. But once you go public, well you subject yourselves to our scrutiny...
@@paulschmich5577 ED only made like $300,000 a year when he played. And he only played for a few years. That is chump change for the records he set. How much has Todd Gurley made? Even though he was injured most of the time?
Eric Dickerson highlighted just how much players were used and underpaid during his time… Someone may one day surpass his record, but it will NOT mean what it did when Dickerson made it… 🤔
The Knight of Awesomeness except goodell is still working and btw is the boss of the company. What type of employee makes more than the boss oh yea nfl players people who make that much for one thing don’t need healthcare there multi millionaires unlessssss they blew all there money and want the nfl to come and hand feed them while they play golf
Salute to Eric Dickerson for trying to do the right thing. It's hard to do the right thing when you have a bunch of cowards surrounding you. They know they all want/need/deserve health care, but are scared to speak up. Now they want to throw this strong black man under the bus.
big662 Yea totally guys who make millions need healthcare real bad unlessss they blew all there money which whose fault is that. Did you listen to the lol “strong black man” Shannon say a couple of videos ago that guess what he dont need it why cause he was smart with his money. Eric Dickerson in 1987 was the highest paid player in nfl history at that time. He made more in a short period of time than normal people today make in their entire lifetime. And your saying that this guy deserves even more money not even taking in the fact that he wants 300,000 a year for doing absolutely nothing. He’s been retired since he was what 30 something kicking back playing golf. And then he just comes in a demands money saying there gonna boycott and there’s people who say he deserves it. is this real life???

@Tjay 000 If you're strong than Michael Jackson had the body of a body builder.
@@larzpolar9599 Dickerson only made like $300,000 something when he was with the Rams that may have been a lot of money back then but that pales compared to the tens of millions made by star running backs today. Look how much Todd Gurley made with the Rams and he was hurt for most of it.
I know that's why I always liked skip he trolls but he knows when to hush, SAS however is madly disrespectful, take it from him he was a decent NBA mlb and NFL player SMH he's low key worse than Lavar Ball at least Lavar had stats 😐
Skip +Shannon work because they respect each others opinion whether they agree with the others point or not. And Shannon was born to play football at a Hall of Fame level + now he's Hall of pundit. He knows football obviously inside + out + he's sharp (no pun intended) about other sports. @@user-lo8km1ws7y 250 bucks is alot to live off? Are you joking? I'm single but if did get married my wife will get my retirement check even after I die
@@user-lo8km1ws7y I really hope u study up and prepare before hitting retirement age if u think someone can live off 250 dollars lol. Deacon Jones did to much for the league to be disrespected like that
I don't think people realize how much money is made in professional sports. I have an acquaintance that is a former mlb baseball player. No one special. He's in his 40s and makes 180k a year from his pension. Eric Dickerson making $2500 a month for his pension is ridiculous.
@@korypeoples5462 what's crazy football especially in Eric Dickerson, had unknown medical issues, like for instance the concussions, and they need it. Football especially on running backs will destroy your body. High risk high reward job
You clearly have no idea how money works. Who makes billions? Maybe everyone involved in the NFL. But how would individual teams or the league as a whole afford healthcare and a sizeable pension for retired players? 😂
magnumxlpi I don’t know finances??? Lmao yet other sports do it and they don’t generate the finances the NFL does. Naw bruh. You don’t know. Do some research. I did before commenting because I was against it at first until I saw how other leagues did theirs. It’s very possible. We’re talking about the hall of fame players. Not every NFL player!
I agree bruh. Anyone who is against this idea as a spectator, the money isn't coming out of your taxes. These players did help make the league what it is today including the massive salaries star players get today vs the Deacon Jones era.
I don't like goodell at all but he has a job and he's earning that $40million, dickerson should have managed his money wisely and he retired in his early 30s what's stopping him from getting a damn job and earning a pension
Do you have any idea how much it'd cost to give every one of them all healthcare and a decent pension 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 typically liberal idea of "gimme something cause I want it, but don't want to do anything for it. They're the bad guy for not giving me monies!"😂😂😂😂
The players are the backbone of the NFL. Who do fans pay $ to see play? 2Billion from Disney-ABC-ESPN for 10yrs of Monday Night Football. Did you know that R. Goodell's 42 Million in 2012 was TAX-FREE as NFL claims to be a Not For profit Organization. www.latimes.com/business/hiltzik/la-fi-mh-heres-why-the-nfls-dropping-its-taxexemption-20150428-column.html Stop being bamboozled and Hoodwinked by these greedy owners and League.
Fans are very uninformed if they think the league can't afford to fund a pension system for retired players. If the league puts up an amount, the team pay an amount and, the player pay into their retirement fund, by a certain age, every player can be covered. The same should be true for health care. The league wants to treat the players like independent contractors but then, wants to continue to make money off of them after the contract period. HTTR!!!
Redskins Pride WGIL I can definitely get behind a healthcare and pension plan that the players themselves invest in for their own futures. The nfl doing it as an addition to these already insane contract numbers would be stupid to even consider.
When I was a probation officer in San Diego my supervisor was an elderly black man who used to play for the Chargers back in the 60s. That whole generation of players did not make much money at all and didn't get any benefits. This man was still working for the county in his elderly years just to make a living. Both me and the other guys I worked with thought this was a travesty that former players are treated like this, especially when you consider how much they limp when they walk or how much pain they have from arthritis or other body parts broken and worn out. I agree with Dickerson, the NFL needs to catch up and be at least equal to the NBA and MLB.
The difference is what they're fighting for. Owens was fighting for a selfish cause, these guys are trying to get health care for every nfl player ever regardless of talent. Its safe to say one is more right then the other considering health care is a pretty important thing when playing a sport like football. The HOF? Not so much.
Mark Brown and Twan 93 whether it was selfish or not, TO believed he was doing the right thing and they crucified him for it. We can disagree, but he had a right to protest for whatever reason. Sounds almost hypocritical. I agree with TO for his reasons and I agree with the rest of the HOF's for their cause.
Do you idiots not understand that most players did NOT make MILLIONS, guys in the 60's/70's/80's made THOUSANDS not millions. And the contracts are NOT GUARANTEED, the team can stop paying you whenever they feel. What guys make today is FAR from what it used to be… thousands, not millions.
Of course the average player is broke within 5 years. They don't go knowing they will make millions, they go in for the chance to make millions. Most have said they will gladly do it again, since the game they love gave them so much.
You know, except for the fact that it was still a lot of money back then, they still had options on how to use that money (wisely or not, evidently it's the latter), and other people made/make less and are fine. Stop grasping at straws to excuse this entitled whining.
To the fans opposing this let me get this straight you want Football to be as violent as it was in the "good old days" but then think the players are ludicrous for wanting a proper pension and health insurance.
@@klashnekov86 but it's what they get for turning around and being hypocritical. I love the hall and I love what they're standing for but at the same time leaves a bad taste in your mouth after the whole T O situation
I am from NYC born and raised, a true Cowboys fan! Even when my sister dated one of the Jets during their Superbowl year. Yeah I'm that old. As a Cowboys fan I never stray from Merridith to Romo now Dak, there are players from other teams I really liked! Eric Dickerson is at my top.
Every player, past or present, needs to support this. Every player should unite and shut everything down. All games get shut down and the only thing mentioned in interviews is health care and pension. Go players.
The league should take this opportunity while it has the chance. If they don't I think that the league is susceptible to a nasty lawsuit down the road. Employees in any other industry where their body is permanently injured as a result of their job would have a case to sue for medical reimbursement. It doesn't matter how much they make - if you put them in danger at work as the employer you're liable for the damage they endure. Believe me - the salary that Dickerson is asking for is far less than a federal judge would grant.
I feel like people in the comment section are very uninformed. He said the $300k is JUST A NUMBER, it doesn’t have to be $300k just something respectable rather then $250 for Deacon Jones, or a couple grand for the greatest rb in league history. Also the NFL can definitely afford a higher pension and healthcare. If the MLB can do it for every player after just playing 1 MLB game, the NFL can do it for a player who put in at least 3 years in the game. Finally I don’t think people really know how much money the NFL makes, if the commissioner can make $40 mil have lifetime health insurance for him and his family, and a private jet at his disposal, they can afford a respectable pension to Hall of Famers and later vested NFL players.
Healthcare for all players makes sense due to the long term health risks of being an NFL player and suffering injuries. A pension is an entirely different story.
Kevin Rogers I think their pension is/covers their “healthcare” but the problem is everything from salary to guaranteed money to now healthcare the NFL Is so far under the other professional leagues so I see where ED is coming from
Then why don't players negotiate for healthcare in their contracts? Why are they, supposedly if this is anything to go off of, not buying their own healthcare? They're crying about being stupid.
+Nick Jaime Except for the fact that when you actually look at socialized medicine and learn that it's garbage and just piggy-backs off of other nations, monetarily and for the medicine. The Free Market is the best way for any commodity or service to get better and cheaper, and there's no denying this basic fact of reality.
My question is why just the Hall of Famers? What about other veteran players that played 5+ active years, those players who played but didn’t get all the accolades but deal with the same medical problems must be hurting too.
I don't remember where I heard it but I've been under the impression for years that all current and retired players were provided healthcare. That's crazy. The yearly salary is debatable in my opinion, but each of the players deserve healthcare. The players literally risk ruining their health for the NFL (more than any other sport) and many of them retire with injuries that will affect them for the rest of their lives. It's crazy that the NFL doesn't provide these players healthcare.
The average salary in 1980 was about $80K. It was at under $200K before the '87 strike. For a player with a decent 8-10 year career, they take home less than a million after taxes and after paying their agent. These are they guys that they're saying need a pension and health insurance.
I can understand healthcare but not a monthly salary. That's on the players to spend their earnings properly and not a bunch of luxury cars and jewelry.
This isn't just about Eric Dickerson and Deon Sanders. It's about every player in the Hall of Fame. Not every player in the Hall played in the same era, and not every player made millions of dollars. The NFL is multi-billion dollar company, and can afford to give these players the benefits they deserve.
Generally the players in the NFL made the most salary in the league compared to the other players. Even if they played in the 60s, they had 50 or whatever years to invest their money. Stocks and business back then didn't cost as much as they do now either.
I got what you are saying but in a basic business negotiations. You ask high and settle somewhere in the middle. They should get healthcare and some for sure should get a monthly pension higher than what they get. especially the older players before the big money came about. I wouldn't say 300k a year but better than what Deacon Jones is allegedly getting atm.
there’s enough money in that business to take care of every player in the HALL OF FAME we’re talking about the HALL OF FAME not just any player that retired but the ULTIMATE LEVEL.. THE NFL CAN AFFORD IT
he's worth every penny to the owners. and why don't players have health care? if that had jobs after retirement they would have health insurance. If they managed their money appropriately they would could afford private insurance. and how large should a 3 year vet earn for a pension? $100k/ year, once you hit retirement age government health kicks in.....looks like the players are looking for handouts.
Kevin Schart who do you we watch the nfl for players or roger goodell. Why does goodell get healthcare and he hasn’t played a lick of football. So what makes you say someone is worth every penny of 35-40 million but when players ask for health insurance they’re looking for a handout?
Kudos Eric Dickerson. Players of old didn’t make a slice of the money that is out there today. Yes they chose to play a violent game but they built this business. The nfl doesn’t owe them but it would surely be goodwill to those that gave their heart and soul for this company/ league. If Kirk Cousins can make all that doe, give pension and health to the former players. Allow guys who don’t need it to opt out if they want to.
If only we lived in a country that provided healthcare as a right to it’s people like the rest of the modern developed world, but hey, what do I know... 😒
Dickerson could go to the HOF and demand that they take his bust down and all evidence of his presence until the retired players are compensated. Then he could call a press conference on the issue right outside the building. That would be a MASSIVE news story and would promote the cause in dramatic fashion.
If they boycott it, I’m sure people would still go (fans, family, friends of family, media, owners for sure will probably all show up). It would be an even bigger media show if they boycott, because Im sure not everyone in the hall agrees, and some will still show up. Its like the draft, no stars or HOF players go, but people still show up.
To me, it is not about the money but taking care of your own! Where did Mike Webster, a hall of fame player during the Steelers greatest years, where did he work and where did he live? Where did he work and where did he live when he died? He did not work, he could not work, he lived in his truck which really means he was homeless. Here is the guy who blocked for a hall of fame quarterback, a hall of fame running back-without those two, they would have never lifted Superbowl trophies in Pittsburgh in the 70's. Lets not forget, if you played now howthey played in the seventies-woul,d not be too long before you would be out of a job and out of the league. They broke their bodies, some of them broke their minds, many broke and destroyed their lives so we could be entertained Sunday after church and on Monday nights for six months out of the year. Forn the money the NFL brings in, they deserve a lot more. Me, what I would say should happen, a player has to set a portion of the money they make in salary and the teams or the NFL should match them dollar for dollar.
I’ll never forget when they did an interview with Conrad dobbler hall of fame for the cardinals and looking at all the surgical scars on his needs and his pain that’s all I need to see and hear the players should get there just due for the battles they have gone through period
Fubzilla how is that being entitled? Negotiating your contract has nothing to do with health insurance because while you’re playing you get health insurance. He’s talking for retired players which don’t get health insurance and would have to pay medical bills out of pocket and as an employer they should give health insurance and a pension which the average person gets when they retire from there job
For the hall of famers and considering how rich the NFL is 1. A salary , $100,000-150,000 2. Free health care It ain't bank breaking. And these players a lot older and played in a far more violent era and not a great medical practice we do now
I'm with Dickerson on this. It doesn't need to be a huge number, but Hall of Famers have made way more money for the sport than they ever get out of it. These guys are gladiators and a career in football leaves lasting damage. I don't think a pension & health insurance is too much to ask for the legends of the sport that made the game what it is today. The NFL should take care of them. Esp if their top execs like Goodell making obscene amounts of money. Especially with CTE and other physical ailments that are rampant in retired players, it would go a long way for the NFL to do something like this as a way of taking care of the greats that took care of them.
Healthcare should absolutely be required. And probably monthly pay for players that played back in the day. But not more recent ones. They get paid more than enough imo 🤷♂️
Eric Dickerson is a stand-up guy. Get behind him everyone who played the game we loved deserves that and more. Loved! I mean dat and I use to be a die-hard Steeler from day one of being introduced to the game. Kap out on bull, Leveon Bell can't get paid. I'm bout done. Go E.D. You'll get it.
I think what's forgotten by many people is that working for the NFL is just one job early in life. I worked six years at my first job out of college and I get no pension or medical benefits from it. I then worked another 40 years at one other job and now have a decent pension for the rest of my life (no medical benefits). Why should NFL players expect a good pension, like $50,000 - $100,000 per year or more, plus medical insurance for life, from some job they had for a few years early in life? Sounds awfully greedy to me (so what's new?). Aren't they going to work somewhere else after football? Maybe they could teach English or something. I'm sure they'd be good at that. I think Deacon Jones' $250/month pension is about right for a few years of work back in ancient times.
I agree with the healthcare just because of the damage the game does to players. The yearly salary is not deserved. You are compensated more than enough while you play to live out your life if you handle your money properly. Worst case do something with the name you got for playing the NFL.
I totally agree, the NFL should take care of the players. The NFL makes a ridiculous amount of money off the backs of these NFL players they can and should be paying.
They deserve a pension and health insurance. But I believe that Eric Dickerson should have made the request to the NFL first and explicitly have been sure that everyone on the list that he made was supportive of the stance before publishing it.
