There are many of us who, when listening to a great performance, can do nothing but study it, hear it, and enjoy the hell out of it without any distractions, like dancing or whooping or bothering the person next to you. Every movement, every thought or even reaction is drawing you away from witnessing the show. It IS total respect. We are not dead. Our senses a piqued. The musicians are getting to us. I have always loved this song and this is the first time I've seen a video of Eric playing it. Outstanding. I don't feel the need to chance distracting him by jumping around making noise. I've also have had great performances ruined by those who can't control themselves around me. It's about respect.

Eric is an outstanding guitar player. He plays in a trio (after a couple of early bands he was with failed to get signed) and typically just billed as Eric Johnson. Eric Johnson is an American guitarist, vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. His 1990 album Ah Via Musicom was certified platinum by the RIAA, and the single "Cliffs of Dover" won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Best known for his electric guitar skills, Johnson is also a highly proficient acoustic, lap steel, resonator, and bass guitarist, as well as an accomplished pianist and vocalist. He plays many musical genres, including rock, blues, jazz fusion, soul, folk, new-age, classical, and country. Guitar Player magazine has called him "one of the most respected guitarists on the planet.
@s.willis8426
@s.willis8426 2 года назад
If I remember correctly from owning this cassette, we actually got 2 songs here. The first song was called "ah via musicom" which is the intro to "cliffs of dover". Possibly done because radio stations would typically just give you the cliffs of dover part instead of the ah via musicom guitar intro.

I've seen EJ a dozen times. That's Kyle Brock on bass. Tommy Taylor is the attack drummer. (I call him that because he always seems to be on the leading edge of the beat. EJ has played a lot of years with those two. Don't know if they are still together. I've seen him mainly in small venues. Rockefellers in house was my favorite. I've had stage front seats several times. I watched a double set there one night. He left his slide on stage and another guest tried to pick it up. I stopped him, as slides are hard to replace when you have one you like. Gave it to a crew member. After the second set he came over and thanked me with a signed sweatshirt and CD. Quiet, soft spoken Texan classically trained in piano. Trademark, Manhattan, SRV, and Desert Rose are other tunes you would enjoy.

In the 90’s, I had a VHS guitar lesson tape by Eric Johnson. He went over all of his equipment, amps, guitars, etc. One thing he talked about explaining his playing style was that he always emphasized his technique by perfecting the tone and individual note clarity. There is no fret buzz, or accidentally touching the wrong string. The man’s brain is wired for perfection. I wish he had more hit songs.

A lot of the fans of Eric are guitarists or at least musicians. We get wild at the right moments, but with an Eric Johnson show, every bit of his playing is just so exquisite that you don't want to miss a thing and most of the time, you will find your jaw hanging open without you knowing it. Last time I saw him was at a venue more known for metal, and most of the people there I knew from local bands, again, mostly metal and heavy rock. Most of us would usually have a pit going, but with Eric, we were being more respectful, feeling the music and not really making that much ruckus. It's just a different vibe. It's been 15 years since that show for me and I still smile. Good times.

It's nice to see a reaction video where the host waits until the end. I grew up in Houston, and I saw Eric Johnson twice in the mid-eighties, once in Houston and once in Austin, and I have to tell you the crowd was quiet when he played because, I know it sounds corny, but it was almost magical and felt like we were experiencing something important.. not sure if that is the right way to word it, but it felt that way to me. I remember during his playing everyone was pretty much silent and just transfixed on his guitar, and when he was finished, the crowd was very moved and reacted as so. I am grateful I had the experience to see him live and experience it.

The entire Eric Johnson: Austin City Limits Live dvd is amazing. Great musicians tearin' things up and having a blast while doing it! I first heard Eric Johnson way back in the very late 80's. I was already into mind-bendingly technical guitarists (Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani, etc.), but Eric Johnson was different. Often utilizing cleaner tones than I was used to, as well as implementing elements from genres that were atypical given the level of shredding in the compositions, his skill and precision was undeniable 🤘

I bought the G3 VHS with Eric and I wasn’t aware of him, I got it mainly for Satch and to a lesser degree, Vai. He seemed so different from the other two, as far as disposition. He wasn’t flashy or outgoing, he seemed totally preoccupied with his technique, as though he was more concerned with technical perfection than putting on a show. I appreciated all three for their respective approaches and unique techniques.

You said in the video “I don’t understand these dead crowds” during such an amazing performance. Well, most people that attend guitar virtuoso concerts are guitarists or musicians themselves (like me) and when you attend these concerts, you want to hear every note and observe their playing in awe. You don’t mosh at this type of concert.. and you also don’t cheer until something is hit spot on, or after the song is over. It’s respect. The guitarist wants you to listen… you can hear a pin drop at a Steve vai comcert, joe Satriani, malmsteen. You want to hear them be able to play live what you hear on the studio version. In this case, eric johnson way out did himself versus the studio version. His runs were way more difficult than studio version. He’s a master. I’ve seen him twice.
