This song and this performance right here was made out of passion. Everyone of you that once felt true love in your life must know that when you have that woman in your life you feel like a superhero, you feel invincible, higher than mountains, brighter than the sun, bigger than life. The man in this video had a woman like that. Makes me sad to wonder if this song was composed in honor to his wife who has killed years after this concert, before the release of "Venus Isle", victim of robbery. Life is not fair dude.
+Nipple Twists Actually I believe he broke up with his girlfriend (not married) sometime in the making of this album. She was murdered 1 year prior to the release of Venus Isle.
The music world is on crack. "Artists" with ZERO talent rule the airwaves, while a freak like this is known only by serious music fans. The sounds EJ pulls out of that '54 strat are so unique, beautiful and powerful at the same time. The chops, the dexterity and tone are not to be taken lightly. I hope he understands that despite the fact that music is in the toilet, there are still plenty of people that appreciate what he does.
Many people today give millions of views and likes to groups and musicians in 2023... and I notice the abyss of the musical quality of eric johnson (like many others of those years there and even before), which compared to another planet ... Eric you are a master and you are and will always be a milestone of rock and TRUE music ... unique!
I love that he's so in the zone on this clip - you can tell he's thrown the worry about technique out the window and is just getting into the joy of playing - a very cool EJ vid...
I kinda agree. I consider them equals, but only because they can't really be compared. Steve Vai plays extraordinarily well and shows how much he actually enjoys it. Eric Johnson, however, knows all the "sweet spots" on the guitar. He can make any guitar solo sound awesome with the combonation of his tone and skill.
He went crazy and sort of classical on this one...Flippin Awsome. The most I've ever figured out of this song was the sweet beginning with the echo-plexes. Eric Johnson = Disturbingly good at Guitar.
I've been able to play Satriani solos and Steve Vai stuff from Passion & Warfare, as well as his stuff from the David Lee Roth days, but I have never, ever been able to approximate what Eric Johnson does (on a Strat no less). I first saw Eric open for Satriani at Irvine Meadows, CA in 1990 I think--I had a Satch T-shirt on, and didn't know what to make of this guy with an old sunburst Fender, but now EJ's the only one of the original G3 I listen to--the Desert Rose solo kicks my ass, ha ha...
The greatest thing about this vid and others from this show was that EJ was totally on fire and in the zone - he's usually more reserved in his stage presence, but is really cutting loose and digging in here...
although iu heard some people say he is not technically the equal of vai and satch, he is a master's master and on a par with the greatest of guitar greats.
Damn.. just, wow - what did I just see??? This is not the Eric Johnson the world knows.. Quickly becoming a favorite - all these years I've only passively paid attention - well he's definitely got my attention now. 1991 was a good year....
+socialdef3 Eric Johnson version 1988-1996 is probably my favorite guitarist ever. He has slowed down a lot and adapted his style in recent years, he's still awesome but god was he a monster back then.
personally i have to say there is a point for some guitarists where they have reached the top, and are masters of their own styles, that's the kind of point that I think both EJ and Steve Vai have reached
I really think he thinks, I am gonna try to dress really bad and play guitar in a fantastic way that people won`t even notice. If people notice, It was not a good show. Hehehe
...which is another compliment that the ignoramuses among us have rated down because they don't understand. FWIW, I agree, EJ does have a very keyboard-like tone.
Just cause its not your thing doesn't mean he has no soul. I like Eric and Herman but just cause they play guitar doesn't mean their playing speaks the same language.
shut up about dragonforce and all these other bands...hey heres an idea, lets talk about the person actually in the dang video! Eric Johnson is the smoothest and most fluid guitarists in my opinion. i love his style, his playing, and especially his tone
The same. I've been able to tap into the raw power of Eddie Van Halen and John Sykes, but Johnson's speed picking technique is almost unapproachable, and agreed, on a stratocaster (an instrument that DEMANDS you play it a certain way, an instrument that you have to fight). Johnson is probably the most inimitable guitar player on the face of the earth.
I agree, he is more animated in this video than usual. The reason people are rating your comment down is because of their poor English comprehension, and because so many of them are barely teenagers, so they are quick to rate down something they perceive as negative, when it's really a positive comment. Translated: People are stupid. Eric Johnson is awesome.
@joediver1119 Well, he's not unique as far as good vocals, but definitely RARE-& an awesome guitarist & human being. Eric Clapton had some pretty good vocals, too!! :O) Steve Howe, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Malmsteen, Van Halen, etc-not so much. Also, keep in mind that having to sing vocals while playing live does distract from guitar, which those with separate vocalists -or no vocals- don't have to worry about. He deserves credit for writing some pretty good lyrics, also!!
It's also okay to say such and such is better than such and such, but some people seem to think that requires insulting the other one. For example, I like Buckethead and Slash a lot, but on their videos it's often said that one is the best, the other sucks COMPLETELY. It just destroys credibility because...neither one sucks at all, regardless of who is better.
