Tip for the harp-harmonic part played up near the top: on the 17th fret for the E & A string, use your thumb over the top of the neck. Middle finger on the 17th fret for e & B string, and pointer finger over the remaining 16th frets. Once I realised this, it was easier, as you have to let the notes ring out. Hope this helps somewhat :)

Thanks so much for this John. I first came across these harp harmonics listening to a Chet Atkins album back in the 70s. They still sound amazing and are still challenging to play.

Not gunna Lie John, when I see that gorgeous Strat on the thumb nail; the Straty fanboy in me is inclined to click on your video more often…. Sounds great Mate, I hope you keep that Strat regardless of “weight” it suits you well… oh and PS. That is definitely my most favorite footage/audio of Eric by far in my opinion. Great episode in general!

Not sure if you love the guitar or not, but it really looks good. The glossy fretboard is usually not my preference but it looks great!

This was awesome. I've been trying the harp harmonic with my thumb and pick like a pinch harmonic. Might be worth trying. It's less accurate at the moment than with the index finger but frees up my middle finger to do the hybrid pluck which is more accurate than the pinky. Still deciding which way to go.

Really nice lesson! Those harp harmonics are addictive, esp. with 6/9 chords. What you call a "harp harmonic" @ 3:34 I believe is correctly called an "artificial harmonic" (it's sometimes notated "a.h." in classical guitar music). The term "harp harmonics" refers more specifically to the technique you demo later of alternating artificial harmonics and normal tones that are nearly adjacent in pitch to create an effect like playing a gliss on a harp. I.e., "harp harmonics" refers the multi-note gliss-like effect, not playing a single artificial harmonic. There's a good discussion of this at Premier Guitar, titled, "How Did Lenny Breau Do That?", attributing Chet Atkins as the likely inventor the technique, and Lenny Breau with extending it greatly. It's also called "cascading harmonics" or "cascading campanella harmonics." As I recall, in his 1st instructional video ("Total Electric Guitar"), EJ points to Breau as where he learned it from. When he teaches harp harmonics there, my favorite part of the lesson is where he adds pull-offs to the technique to extend the cascade. I like to use that particular technique on acoustic guitar-actually, I typically use exactly that exact run (the one where he creates a descending D major scale combining harp harmonics and pull-offs). And don't forget the harmonics at the 7th/19th fret (open-string or artificial); an arrangement I'm currently working on (again on acoustic) builds a cascade using those harmonics instead of the 12-fret harmonics. -Tom

Bro I asked you to make this a couple weeks ago! Was it because I asked? Either way, thank you so much for this lesson. 🥰

as a suggestion, always start showing the specific technique, and then develop the idea, cause it's confusing which is the actual koto technique

Interesting how you are attributing the Harpmonics to Eric, as I’ve always attributed it to Lenny Breau. Not that is matters where it comes from.

Probably because EJ uses them in this song, which was requested by a viewer and JC is a disciple of EJ’s techniques.
@TLMuse

@@ronfrey5327 Right; a Premier Guitar article attributes invention of the technique to Chet, with Lenny greatly extending it. And I'm pretty sure I've heard EJ say he learned it from Lenny's music in one of EJ's instructional videos (though he may have also mentioned Chet, as he's a big Chet admirer and I'm sure he's aware of Chet using the technque).
