Hey, thanks for the kind words! Wish we could have been better hosts but you two seemed pretty tired and still a "to do" list to accomplish anyway. Great to meet both of you and share a tiny piece of your adventure. Looking forward to the updates!

i'm a fan. it's a nice change of pace, for me at least.....to watch another sailing channel with absolutely no sailing. seriously, very informative. and not that it matters.....but i'm off the smokes for a year now but i like the fact that you don't hide your smoking habit. nobody is perfect. i hope we're all nonsmokers someday soon. :) thanks for the video.

Totally enjoyed this episode! We are leaning towards starting a Great Loop voyage next Spring, so we'll be headed through the Erie Canal in the opposite direction... very cool to see bits of what we are in for. :)

Notice how the shoreline is flat usually on one side sometimes both side - back in the early day, they used horse and donkey to pull the barges along the canal. You entered the canal in the Tonawanda's off the Niagara River. Around July of every year, they have the Canal Fest (www.canalfest.org/) and that is usually when I head back. I was born and raised in Tonawanda. Great video very informative. Yes that trek is rather boring but it is beautiful, calm and far enough off the beaten path to keep things serreal.

I like your vibe!! don't sweat the small stuff, New York City! enjoy your stay, dopn't get run over by a Ferry-they don't like sailboats that don't sail, ha ha P.S.--don't Forget to raise your mast! LOL

You should be passing through Syracuse right when the State Fair is happening. I used to ride my dirt bike up and the tow path west of the city.

Did you notice the four arched bridges at the intersection of the Genesee River and the Erie Canal? Reminds me of a traffic intersection before roads. It was immediately after a lock so you may have been busy and missed it, one of my favorite points on the canal.

A suggestion: A picture being worth a thousand words.... When talking about something, for instance how the mast is tied down, show us the tie downs and the support framework. When talking about the orchard, point the camera at the orchard. If things are interesting enough for you to talk about, show us.

Could you bring her in to the walls fairly tightly amid ship with your bow line strung back outside the rail to the stays then loop it around the vertical lock line then walk it back to the bow as you back the boat down then let the boat sway in at the stern until you can reach the stern line around? sdh in CT

Was wondering what fenders you would recommend for the Erie canal locks we just splashed almost 2 weeks ago and now living aboard our Oday... We are doing the great loop and will be returning to the great lakes next spring. There's rumors in the looping world that round fenders are required I would like your perspective on the subject

Hope you don't mind the question but ..... who can be contacted in Canada to get advice on sailing routes from Nova Scotia though to a) Toronto (easiest first I suspect), b) Ottawa (almost as easy I guess) and c) Saskatoon (if that is even possible - I am thinking rivers and canals mostly after leaving the St Lawrence Seaway).

Can people solo the Erie canal and through those locks?
@Scupperjack
@Scupperjack 6 лет назад
This was fun. I grew up in Lockport, so it was nice seeing this. I also sail. My sailing was on Lake Ontario and I sailed out of Olcott and Wilson, which are just north and northwest of Lockport. If you would like to come for a short sail with me off of Olcott, then come along on this short youtube video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-01NNKyAzZzM.html I went south myself on a sailboat and entered the canal at Oswego. Anyone that would like to know more about the canal and Lockport should read Stairway to Empire: Lockport, the Erie Canal, and the Shaping of America by Pat McGreevy. I just finished reading it myself. Have fun and enjoy your trip. PS The fire hydrant was invented by Birdsill Holly Jr in Lockport as well as centralized steam heating!

Now that you are alone on the boat, do you think you could navigate the locks solo ?
@LadyKSailing
@LadyKSailing 5 лет назад
No I can’t. She’s too big. I’ve seen people solo lock a 26 but Lady k is very hard to lock. The tumblehome presents issues and the solar panels are big enough that they’ll hit the lock wall. Also she only backs up to starboard lol. A different boat maybe.

what shocks me here is that nowhere it seems in New York do they require you to have your PFD's on while transiting bridges or locks. That is just stunning and very sad that this could occur anywhere in the USA.

We’re keel stepped. Took us about an hour to take the mast down and it cost us $125 at Sugarloaf Marina.

Awesome guys. I'm starting to follow your journey. I've been researching getting into sailing and that's how I found you. I just told my gf that this is my journey in 5 yrs. I'll be buying a sailboat over winter. We live in Windsor. Would love an opportunity to try sailboat if you're ever available. Check my channel out for our camping journey. Cheers!
