Pictures of Caryathis (and her husband Marcel Jouhandeau)
The "Belle Excentrique" ("The Beautiful Eccentric") consists in three dances and an interlude, written for the French dancer Caryathis (née Elisabeth Toulemont), first for piano duet (Summer of 1920), then for orchestra (1921). The "Grande Ritournelle" reuses the "Légende californienne" (ca. 1905, • Video ).
An early plan for "La Belle Excentrique" shows that Satie intended it as a musical tour through three periods of Parisian popular entertainment, titled as follows:
1. 1900 : Marche pour une grande Cocotte ("March for a big Chicken")
2. 1910 : Élégance du Cirque (Ecuyère) ("Elegance of the Circus (Horsewoman)")
3. 1920 : Cancan moderne ("Modern cancan")
