Everytime I hear this - my mind seems to seek a lost memory (real or, imaginary) from a period in my life a long time ago; I know I should remember it completely and if I could, it would reveal a great warmth and happiness within me, but as I edge near, the fleeting recollection evaporates completely, leaving me musing - what might have been. At this point I find myself at the end of the piece. I can only listen to this when I am in the right mood - but it's brilliant! The Gnossiennes must have driven Satie mad with depression.
