What’s happening in this Erin Brockovich movie clip?
Erin (Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman, Notting Hill and My Best Friend’s Wedding) and Ed (Albert Finney from Tom Jones, Annie and Murder on the Orient Express) are meeting a representent of the PG&E firm to negotiate a deal to not go to court. He offers 250 000$ to buy Jensen's house without even considering the illnesses they suffered because of the company. He even denies the responsibility they have in this. While Ed is trying to negotiate, he realizes the man he has in front of him is not here to negotiate, just to get the case closed, and he is just an insignificant employee in the firm. So Ed gets really angry and ends the discussion saying he’s gonna talk about this to the Jensens, but obviously he just wants to go to court. The PG&E employee tries to scare him with the turnover of 28 billion dollars of his company. As a result, he just makes Ed laugh really loud.

What’s the Erin Brockovich movie about?
Erin Brockovich (Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman, Notting Hill and My Best Friend’s Wedding) is a mother of three kids. She gets into a car accident, in which she is not in fault, but her lawyer Ed Masry (Albert Finney fom Tom Jones, Annie and Murder on the Orient Express) still loses the case because of her attitude in front of the court. She manages somehow to convince him to give her a job as a legal assistant in his law firm. Erin uncovers some medical records placed in real estate files. She starts to investigate with Ed’s approval, and she discovers that a huge firm is hiding the contamination of the water to the consumers. A local community, Hinkley, is particularly affected, the contaminated water is causing devastating illnesses among its residents.

I liked the choice to cast Erin Brockovich herself as the waitress in the film. That was funny.
@3rdandlong
@3rdandlong Год назад
The name of the casting director is Margery Simkin. There is a Mini-documentary on here of how this was made and how it developed. Kinda like a stroke of luck for Erin which includes an interview with her. And a side note I didn't know until I saw this, in the cafe scene at beginning, the real Erin Brockvich is the waitress (which I already knew). But I didn't know the guy sitting behind Julia in the cafe looking at the menu is the real Ed Masery.

@@janetlieb2507 I was thinking if this was so successful, Finny could have probably done a spin off of this as "Ed Masery" and probably done well with it. @@christopherx7035 I disagree. This was was the only movie I've seen from her with any soul in it. Julia Roberts is normally quite bland imo. Competent, but so very bland...including in the movies you mentioned, which are alright but pretty corny and formulaic (plus I really hate Richard Gere for some reason so Pretty Woman's certainly not my favorite. He was likely an accomplice of Harvey Weinstein, you know). But here there's this spark I've never quite seen from her before or since. The only other project that comes close is Homecoming, the TV series. Apparently Julia Roberts shines when she collabs with super innovative directors heavy on style like Soderburgh or Sam Esmail.

It's also so smart. This is the first meeting she's had with a lawyer as an employee of the firm (other times would be the accident and the divorce), so she's sitting tight and letting the veteran handle it. But when he hesitates to list the medical problems, you can see her hesitate a moment and then think "Here I come" and lists everything off the top of her head, immediately putting the prick on the defensive. Is her first taste of being the "ace up their sleeve." Then in the next meeting, the moment their lawyer talks down to the victims, she's "fuck this I'm going in" and nails one of the best scenes in the movie.

Sometimes you need people to respond to you like that. Through their responses, Erin is telling Ed that it is good that he is pissed off. Now that he is properly pissed off, Ed can now direct his anger and frustration at the people who are responsible for this whole mess: the owners of PG & E. This is a primary reason why many of the world's crises do not get solved: people don't get properly pissed off and they get frustrated and just end up ignoring these problems. It goes back to a quote from the Civil Rights movement: "If you see a good fight, get in it."

I love this film too. I agree this is the finest performance of Julia Roberts long and illustrious career, so far, and totally deserved the plaudits. Sometimes great films like this depend on a strong dynamic relationship. Albert Finney provided the perfect foil in Ed Masry and much more besides. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say Finney was so highly regarded in this country of great actors that even his peers, Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Peter O' Toole, Patrick Stewart, Michael Caine, Alec Guinness even all looked up to Albert Finney, almost as much I believe as their American counterparts looked up to Marlon Brando.

Albert Finney was one of the great actors of the 20th century. One of the most underrated as well. His American accent here is spot on, reflecting the kind of dedication he brought to his characters. From Lysander and Poirot, to Daddy Warbucks and Dr. Hirsch, he threw everything them, coaxing out an authenticity -- and often a charm, wit and, occasionally, malice -- few actors can match.

no one "rated" it. it is in the context that not many have seen it or even know about it therefore it's underrated. if I wanted attention I wouldn't comment on a youtube video saying something that gets me 10 likes.
