I’m 36 and can’t recall any Widget Skank cartoons being on tv and I watched em all! Captain Planet and David the Gnome as a couple examples.

Watched the cartoon but never knew of the games. Puts me in the mood for some Mighty Max.

I thought of this cartoon only recently but couldn't remember the name. Now I know thanks for bringing back some childhood memories

Here in NYC Widget the World Watcher was one of those generic cartoons that would play on WWOR channel 9 (a NewJersey channel) either on weekdays early in the morning before school or on Sundays when there was no non-cable competition for the age group.

i remember renting this game and loving it, but i was really young. The transformations were cool and so was the planet exploration. Until very recently i was convinced it was a fever dream

Video games have always been weird, and still, about halfway through, my focus pulled back a little, and I had one of those "What the HELL am I watching?" moments. I remember this cartoon airing, but I don't remember anything about it, and the same goes for the games; I'm sure I've played them, but this was all new to me.

To answer your question, Erin, Widget was about a purple alien whom was (accidentally) sent to Earth to defend it (and when asked, neighboring planets) from regular threats like Mega-Slank, Flim Flam, and Ratchet. It wasn't unlike Captain Planet, although Widget had the better game than Cap. Widget on the NES didn't take very many liberties from the show it was based upon, but the liberties it DID take make it recognizable enough to linger in memory. It also had some Mega Man elements in the fact you had to beat the stages in a certain order to get the transformation powers to get through certain places, and access certain items. Super Widget had a lot more liberties from Widget. And tbh felt more fluid and fun. It definitely resonated better with the part of our brain that stores our memory of Widget.

Oh yeah this show is some deep dank memories from when i was very young. I never knew there were games of it.

Me: "those bugs look like a cross between a heffalump and a bee" Erin: "It's like a cross between a wasp and a woozle" Me: "alright, that works too."

as a kid i had knack for randomly ending up with the best games without the benefit of the internet or even magazines. on Snes i owned A Link to the Past, Star Fox, Street Fighter 2, Mario Kart, Turtles in Time and THIS game somehow. The goofy but charming Super Widget. And I loved it. My friends and I played it to death. Extremely nostalgic for me. Something about the transformations and graphics was super appealing to me when i was 4-7 years old.

I used to watch Widget as a kid! But you had to get up at 7 or 7:30 to watch it. Although the first time I saw the Floating Brain guy in the cartoon it freaked me out because you could see his brain through his glass? head. Thanks for playing these Erin!

I remember this cartoon. It and Denver the Last Dinosaur were carefully injected with as much 90's "too cool 4 skool" attitude as was possible.

Jeez...a forgotten animated series from 1990. Plus another one teaching kids about saving the Earth and stopping pollution....just like Captain Planet and Toxic Crusaders.

At least the second one is so much more colorful. I wish the creatures would react more when hit. It's like they keep getting hit in the face and no reaction at all.

I remember this cartoon mainly appear on sunday morning cartoons in the 90's its a good cartoon and very underrated but i would choose the Snes version over the nes both widget are not that great but the snes is more playable and enjoyable than the nes and you should do a video on erin top 10 crabs in any video games

Graphically, the Super Widget game looks good! Gameplay wise it looks ok. The gameplay however really reminds me of Bonk on TurboGrafx-16.

Widget has always been a funny word to me.

I remembered Widget being on TV in the early 90s. I think it was on the Fox station in Philly in the morning and it would come on before Beetlejuice. Not a real memorable show. Captain Planet obviously was the more memorable environmental cartoon. I used to think the NES game was better but I've grown to appreciate the SNES one more. It's definitely a hidden gem. The NES version also just feels a weaker-controlled Mega Man clone. I don't blame you for the frustration on that game.

great way to make the best of some RATCHET games based on a semi-generic cartoon. i like that you don't copy what other creators are doing. there are so many hilarious games from Nintendo and Sega, during this era.

Isn’t “widget” actually a term used in game development? IIRC “widgets” refers to HUD elements such as remaining lives, health, score, etc.

Super widget looks aesthetically interesting. But the pacing of these games are just SO slow. I know you can run, but it feels slow. I'm probably spoiled from donkey kong country 1-3, super mario world 1 and 2 (yoshi's island), and sonic.. but still. I like a bit more speed when running in a platformer. Loved rayman origins on ps3 bc it controlled SO well.
