This is exquisite music, brought back to life after so many years of obscurity. It was quite the exotic spectacle in its time; grand opera at its best, with a subtle orientalist touch in the music from the same composer who wrote "Le Selam". Thank you so much for posting this beautiful masterpiece ...nice to close my eyes this Sunday and soak myself for a couple of mercenary hours in ancient Carthage, with the enigmatic princess Salammbô and her doves.
Flaubert's masterpiece has inspired a masterpiece from Reyner too, it seems. It is quite reminiscent of the novel. I can hear Hamilcar and Salambó in the banquet of mercenaries! I wish Mussorgsky had completed his wonderful opera adaptation as well...
