Despite the quality of some of the Ernest movies it's always clear that Jim Varney was a fantastic performer. I loved all the movies as a kid but as an adult I can appreciate how talented Varney really was.
I wish he got to do one drama before he died. Or a small serious role in something like The Big Short as like a venture capitalist. Like John Candy in "JFK". Something to show a different audience his talent.
gridlo Actually he kind of did one in a film called Treehouse Hostage. It is a comedy but he he actually plays a symphicetic character in that. Someone we feel for. Check it out. Its in RU-vid
I love that I live in a world where there are multiple podcasts devoted to the Ernest character and media franchise. I came because you got Jack from rlm, I stayed for the Ernest talk.
The LAST great Ernest movie, after Rides Again it's all downhill. But oh man is Rides Again underrated. DOCTOR MELON! DOCTOR MELON! So far, in my entire life, I've never met anyone else who likes this movie. Most people have never even heard of it.
I always liked it growing up. Oddly, it was the only Ernest movie we had on VHS (we taped it on our VCR from a TV broadcast). I'm also ashamed to admit, it was the last Ernest movie I saw; until I found this series, I never realized there were another 4(!) Ernest movies made after this one!
I remember loving this film as a kid and not liking scared stupid as much. Maybe I need to go back and watch these again, but I loved the vacuum salesmen, the Dr Melon bits, and all of the fun dialogue in this one.
I agree. I watched it when it was released on video. It wan’t great, but it had some good jokes and felt like an Ernest movie. We rented Goes to School when it came out and shut it off in the middle of it. I never tried watching another Ernest movie after that.
@@ruckdog We had this taped off of TV as well. We had everything taped off of TV, I think we only owned 2 legit movies when I was growing up. Aladdin and Little Mermaid.
Long sleeves in Jail, as well. 😉 I remember when this came out, it was barely in theaters, and subsequently difficult to find on home video. I eventually got a DVD from Canada, fullscreen and pretty awful quality. It wasn't til it started showing up on collections with the Ernest commercials, Hey Vern It's My Family Album, and other odds and ends. Hell, in the VHS days, even the commercial collections were easier to find than Rides Again!
Based on how much I liked the opening credits/theme song ("A Man Called Worrell") and remembering that I also liked the Ernest Goes to Jail songs ("Doing Time", "Coconut Tree") I looked up the artist. IF I'm not mistaken, they all seem to be written by Bruce Arntson who, turns out, is one half of the hilarious musical comedy duo "Debbie and Doyle." Well worth looking into if you're not familiar. One of my favorites, "Blue Stretch Pants," can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xQuFj36jR_8.html
Terminator 2 is a bad example for open matte because they did a lot of work to select the visible area for the 4:3 version -- it's not just more on the top and bottom. There's a special feature on some DVD versions that shows this off.
Just discovered you guys, this is stupid, but when it involves people's childhoods it is absolutely necessary and is JUST as important as a SNES VS Sega Genesis debate. Thank you
Of all the Ernest movies that came before 1996, this is the last one that I saw. I had suddenly become an Ernest fan in 1995, over the course of those two years I would see all the Ernest movies, whether I'd seen them before or not (and this one was the only one that I first saw in 1996). I'd been ranking it as one of my three least favorites for years, but a few weeks ago I watched it again, and I did enjoy it more. Previously, my ranking of the films, from best to least, was: Jail, School, Saves Christmas, Camp, Scared Stupid, Rides Again, In the Army, and Africa. Having watched it again recently, I think I'll bump it ahead of Scared Stupid and maybe even Camp (not really sure there).
Absolutely love how you guys are reviewing the Ernest movies! I personally really like Rides Again, even though I will agree that it suffers from its low budget (especially in terms of the odd “open matte” thing you guys talked about) and doesn’t always hit the mark with its humor. I like the long cannon sequence, though, and I think the plot is interesting for what it is. It’s definitely not a classic and not as good as something like Goes to Jail, but I think it’s still a decent movie. Can’t wait to hear what you guys think of the direct-to-video movies.
Just gonna say right off the bat that after not seeing it in over 15 years this is my new favourite Ernest movie! Decided to watch it before checking out your review and oh boy I'd forgotten how tight and cleverly written the comedy was. For a film that has Ernest spending 2/3's of it riding a giant cannon they sure do make it a hoot!
If you guys gave the #1 film an extra point from the others (so if #1 film gets 11 points instead of 10, but the #2 film and so forth get 9,8,7 etc.) I think it can break most your ties
That's probably a last resort. There's still a chance the current tie gets broken as new movies enter the rankings and push entries around differently in different lists.
I was watching this review along with the “Rides Again” movie and the scene where Abner does the Elvis impression came on at the EXACT MOMENT THAT YOU MENTIONED IT. So weird!
I think this actually took less time to rank than Dr. Otto. Ernest Goes to Washington is the first concept to come to mind that fits the scheme and has a theme.
aside from all the awesome ernest talk, every episode of Ernest Roulette refferences other movies i love (primer, street trash etc) I have found my tribe
@@KevinJamesVideo I did a few searches and couldn't find any. I think they were out of El Dorado, Arkansas. I remember the guy falling out of a deer stand and his catchphrase was "the deals are sweeter at Teeter"
Only 4 more? Well then what's next, a Rodney Dangerfield Wheel? You could watch anything from Easy Money, Lady Bugs, Rover Dangerfield, or Natural Born Killers.
I went ahead and preliked this video, cause it's gonna be great! Someone already disliked it. That's not fair. How can you dislike a video about Ernest? Especially if you haven't seen it yet.
Honestly, I had a blast watching Rides Again. I loved all the side characters, especially the vaccum cleaner salesmen. This had the potential to be the goriest Ernest movie what with the sharp objects and gun play. There's even an axe included for good measure.
I used to love this movie when I saw it once as a kid but I was probably mixing it up with Jail because I watched it again a couple years back and it's literally just the cannon careening around the place
I only vaguely recall seeing a promo for this one (at a time when I wasn't caring that much about Ernest), then a few years later I suddenly became a big Ernest fan (which was actually jumpstarted by Bill Byrge, who played Bobby in some of the films, coming to my class and talking about his work), I heard of this title again and had an "oh yeah..." feeling, for about a half year before actually seeing this one I kept wondering "why is it called Ernest Rides Again? What does he ride again?" To be fair, I recently learned that Ernest Rides Again had a very limited release, so that could be why I barely saw commercials. I say this is my least favorite of the theatrical Ernest films, but I have only seen this one once. Maybe I should watch it again (RU-vid Movies currently has it available for free).
I really enjoyed the movie, even after Christmas and Halloween. Jim Varney started with no budget and I don't think he ever needed one to be funny. Yeah the special effects and cameras used to be better, but I found it really more like classic TV Ernest.
if ernest was supposed to go to space in the next movie and if it was going to be the tenth movie in the franchise, they should have taken the friday the 13th route and called it Ernest X
@@GuaranteedVideo It'l be hard but you guys can do it. PS: There's another imitation of Ernest that is under the radar. The imitation is in the form of animated commercials...They're a disgrace. I'm surprised it's set as the worst movie, but understand why. It's tied with Jail as my favorite. I think I like it mostly for what was pointed out. It feels like the odd one out and I enjoy it more as an adult.
It spread lies about DID and that is that on that, if the guy wanted to make multiple characters he could have made that just like Ernest did without using the mental illness as an excuse, the fact his switching is supposed to be funny is also gross and ableist Don't watch Split, watch Ernest movies
Wait, wait, wait, is the professor played by Ron James? The Canadian stand-up comedian that I've seen live a couple times? Huh. Sounds like he was wasted in this film.
Why is RU-vid recommending videos that aren't up yet? I am pretty disappointed that I can't watch this now. I was like, "Cool, I wondered when those dudes were gonna talk about more Ernest," and I clicked, and now I'm just leaving a lame comment instead of hearing about Ernest. This must be a new feature or at least the first time I have come across it. Just release the video now! We want Ernest!
We want to try a live audience approach for this one- but we have a half dozen LONG videos up already if that helps. This episode is available now for Patrons, too, if you want to watch asap.
@@GuaranteedVideo Oh, that sounds cool. Get a live audience, so everybody can talk Ernest. The more the better. The world needs more Ernest! You are doing a good thing here. Keep it up! I got a fever and the only cure is more Ernest P. Worrell!
