Im hearing a slightly looser bass end on the regular strings, little tighter on the M steel. I hear the most high freq on the cobalt. I think the reg strings sound a little muffled and lifeless to be honest. I think cobalts would be my preference. I would love to see the eq frequencies from the different strings.

I use regular slinkys just because im always changing them out as soon as they dull up at all, the elixers and NYXL strings feel more quality and smooth though for the money.

i think for strings, it's more the feel that matters, not the tone, as the tonal difference is just so minimal. For feel, I could say it's a tossup between cleartones and NYXL
@CIRCLEOFTONE
@CIRCLEOFTONE 7 лет назад
ColonelCrazy feel is important. But I adjusted to the stiffness in bending Cobalts and now when I try other brands they feel like toys/toneless. But it is an initial shock.
@VoodooChiilld
@VoodooChiilld 7 лет назад
Have been using NYXL for 6 months now. Just yesterday I changed my strings to Cleartonezzz just to try them out. They feel a bit harder to bend compeered to NYXLs. I actually like that. I can tune down half a step and still be at good tension even with set of 9's to 42. I also really like the coating or rather the fact that you can't really feel it. I think that Cleartones feel really good but I still have to get use to them (I've been playing them for only 2 days). Maybe eventually I'll like them even more then my D'addarios. When it comes to sound... well D'addario are saying that NYXL have "...greater magnetic properties resulting in higher output...". I didn't believed that until I changed strings to a different brand. Cleartons don''t sound as loud as NYXL. It's not a big difference but I can still hear it. Besides that they sound really nice. The tuning stability is fantastic on both sets. When it comes to how long the strings lasts, I've been playing them for only 2 days so maybe I'll come back in 2 months and share my opinion on that. If they last more then 2 months then they would be perfect in between Elixirs that last forever, until the end of time and D'addarios that feel and sound amazingly great. As(s) of Ernie Balls... Tried 4 or 5 sets and hated them... They feel WAAAY to soft for me. At one point I had to put on 11's in standard tuning (and I usually go with 9's), but I get that some people would probably love that about them. They also last not more then a week and after that they sound old. Also I broke a string on almost every set I had which never happened to me on NYXL's... I really don;t get why ernie balls are so popular.
@ThatBaritoneGuitarGuy
@ThatBaritoneGuitarGuy 7 лет назад
ColonelCrazy, I have been exclusive to NYXL ever since Fluff did that string shootout. They are a lot smoother than Ernie Ball, so slides don't feel like rubbing against sandpaper. As for why I chose NYXL instead of Cleartone, I am cash-only. But the only way to get Cleartone is buying online. Both of our local shops sell NYXL, so I can pay cash for them.
@dmmmsarith
@dmmmsarith 7 лет назад
Guitar Nerd local shop here started supplying cleartones, but as for NYXL. the tighter windingdoes feel very good, the 10-52 is amazing to play. but I drop tune and currently use the 11-56 set from cleartone and the larger core diameter on the wound string, cleartone, gives them a tighter feeling. if NYXL decides to put out a 11-56 set i might switch :)
@dmmmsarith
@dmmmsarith 7 лет назад
VoodooChiilld because big marketing and endorsees like metallica and acdc. On cleartones, the treatment is still present, as in you can feel it, the marketing videos say you cant feel it all. you can, but just veey barely, but doesnt bother me. For the accoustic properties, i had the opposite experience, that without the amp olugged, cleqrtones sounded louder, then again cleartones were 11-56 and NyXLs were 11-52. reason why im with cleartones right now is the 11-56 set and the larger core diameter on wounded strings, if NYXl were to release 11-56 i might even switch to those

Wound strings: D'Addario NW. Plain strings: Elixir Nanoweb. All custom single gauges. I also use GHS Fast Fret every time I play and Dunlop Ultraglide 65 from time to time. This gets me long lasting/best tone possible. And I tried a lot of different brands before settling with this setup. That being said, YMMV with strings, so you always have to find what works for you.
@marko247
@marko247 7 лет назад
I bought myself some GHS fast fret just before christmas and threw a new set of strings on (EB Slinkys, STHB). Usually I'd be wanting to change strings after a week but they are just now getting to the point where I'm thinking they need a change. If you haven't tried it, you should.

+jgmopar Yes of course, you simply discovered the known truth that no guitar is worth more than 1500$, unless its vintage. Because, the machines can build a 1000$ guitar just as well as a handcrafted 3500$, simply by mistake, because so many of them are made. A few of them are bound to be GEMS. You just have to find the "good" ones. This is buying guitars 101, i only knew this because my father who has played for 40 years taught me well. 3500$ guitars are a scam, or for people who wipe their ass with bills. But then they should be donating to a non-corporate lobbying charity if they are wiping their bootyhole with bills, instead of blowing their money on 3500$ guitars when you can get a piece of work just as nice for 1000$ if you put in the effort to look.
@jgmopar
@jgmopar 7 лет назад
I have known it for a long time. I spend no more than 800.00 for a guitar and that is rare. I can find something I like in the 300.- 500. range. I am actually a CNC Machinist so I know how easy it is to make them and mass produce them. I actually prefer a CNC guitar over hand built for the sake the tolerances are so tight and stay that way for the most part. Much better fit with components. hand built if I wanted an art piece or collectors item. But I buy guitars to play not invest. And I don't want to worry about scratching a 1000.00+ guitar.

@IamAtTheBridge
@IamAtTheBridge 5 лет назад
I know this is old, but I appreciate that you played the strings without a heavy distortion to get a better feel for the tonal qualities of the strings. Many people add a lot of effects and you cant get a feel for the base of what the strings actually sound like. I understand people play different styles and such, but I will instantly click away if its someone doing some blues, or metal or whatever in favor of someone who just plays a somewhat clean tone. I have an allergy to nickel that i've been dealing with for awhile and i've been looking into gloves, stainless steel strings, etc and I'm going to try these cobalt strings. I wish they had a flatwound type, but oh well. does the cobalt cause excessive wear on the frets like stainless steel?

when the Cobalts first came out I tried them and fell in love with them. I really like the mid-range boost they give.
@Merrillizer
@Merrillizer 4 года назад
That's weird, because the Cobalt's are marketed as losing some of the midrange in favor of higher "output" and more highs and lows. Hmmmm?
@dangehret1349

@@Merrillizer the frequency response marketed literally on the string pack shows a massive midrange boost. (Overall boost, really, but very pronounced in mid and treble)
@SquishyTheTitan

The way I've always seen it is that the M-Steels are good for rhythm guitarists because they have a bit more of a mid-low tone, regular slinkys are for lead guitars with a brighter tone, and Cobalts are really just all-round.
@Thomogon
@Thomogon 7 лет назад
The thing that stood out immediately was that the M-Steel and Cobalt both add a sense of dynamic, the steel strings add a twangy/metalesque sound which the steel would imply, he cobalt adds a lot of bottom end and clarity to the sound. This is my first impression after about 2/3 minutes of watching

I absolutely LOOOOOOOOOOOVE using cobalts on my bass. such a great tone. as for this video with the strings on guitar, the M-Steels sound like they accentuate the high end more, and the Cobalts have more low end. the Slinkys sound dull and flat.
@FrancescoFiligoi
@FrancescoFiligoi 7 лет назад
In between these, I'm partial to the Cobalts myself. Too much low end and output on the M-steels, and the regular Slinkys are ok but a bit too midrangey with not enough bottom imho.
@jmcsquared18

Ryan Bruce maybe I have tried the cobalt so personally I thought they where good. My preference is the Ernie Ball Slinky Cobalts. Longest lasting, best sounding and feeling strings I've used in my 25yrs of playing. Sonically, there's a unique-pronounced high-mid boost that no other strings have (that I know of) and it especially helps cut the mix at low tuning. At $13/pack for the 10-62 7 string set, there a bit pricey for me.. but I pay the price every time, regardless.

I began using Ernie Ball Beefy Slinkys and did for about a year before trying Dunlop Heavy Cores. I found that they had a bit more snap and sustain. Soon after, I was turned on to D'addario EXLs by a friend and used EXL116s for about 8 months before recently trying my first set of ProSteels. And it was almost like taking a large blanket off of my amp. It opened up so much clarity and brightness and just overall *oomf* that I never had before. I'm still open to try new things but for now, that's what I'm sticking with.

First off, well done vid. I have been using the cobalts for just over a year and have switched all my guitars to them. I came across them while in getting a guitar worked on. I was speaking to the tech and mentioned to him how it sucked that dean markley stopped making the blue steels. They were my go to string back in the late 80s and early 90s. He mentioned the cobalts as a option that sounded similar, and they sure did. That being said, i threw on my headphones closed my eyes and paused one my likes and in a couple cases my ears digged the m-steels, still paused more on the cobalts though. I have read a few times people mentioning them rusting and I have never had a problem with that. I ain't a sweaty guy but I am also not the guy that wipes my strings after playing etc. And so far so good, and I love the tone and feel of them.

M-Steels have a bit more "bang," than the regulars. I usually use Elixir unwound strings and have been rotating through the cobalt and M-Steel for the wound ones. Elixirs are basically the only brand that has treatment on the unwound strings that I've played so far(besides those dead-sounding, painted DRs). AFAIK all Ernie Ball unwound strings are regular nickel steel.

Been using EB's for the last, well, a long time... I've been hounded by a couple friends to give the NYXLs a try, and I stayed trued to my EBs. During a recording, I told they guys that I needed to wash my hands as my fingers were getting that almost sticky feeling. I ended up going to lunch and they swapped my EBs for a pair of NYXL strings. No word of a lie, it was that significant of a change for me, and I recently put NYXL strings on all of my guitars. If you haven't tried them, they are actually pretty great strings. I will always love EBs, but I gotta admit those NYXLs are very smooth. Thanks for another great vid Fluff!

With the single coils, I found the Cobalt to sound the best of the three - the regular slinkys sounded kinda dead by comparison. m-steel was too bright and weird for these ears. I use M-Steel myself, on my JS22 SC. Sounds great, and gets heavy as hell. I tend to chug away on power chords till my fingers hurt just because it sounds so damn good. I might try those Cobalts when it's time to chamge strings, though. They sound pretty good, too.

i use a 9-54 seven string set with the D string removed quite a bit lately. i use if for tuning down a hole step and drop c.

While I do like the sound and feel of Ernie Balls (especially their bass strings), they last about 5 minutes before they gunk up and rust so I need to change them out again, especially the low strings. I also find they're much easier to snap than a lot of other strings I've tried. I've stuck with Elixirs for the longest time and can get them to last months on end of heavy usage and find it very hard to snap one.

It's cobalts all way for me. I play hard rock - rock & roll and i like bend the strings from the 5th fret and before. When i used super slinkys and after the RPS my fingers were hurt everytime i changed strings for a couple of days. Then i noticed cobalts and that everyone said they are very soft in touch and fun to bend them. I used them and i just can't find any better than these. I remember when once my e string broke i went to take a regular one, because it wasn't time to change the whole set. The difference was obvious of course, i thought the string was an 11 while i used 9s XD

I love how Fluff says Ernie Ball as one word, like Ernieball.

I iv tried all the reg, m steel, and cobalts. I liked the sound of the cobalts they were quite a bit louder and were more clear but they broke much quicker than just a regular nickel set of strings and they are twice as expensive here so I don't really wanna spend quite a bit of money on strings. Maybe some recording situations ill use a set of cobalts for the DI tracks but thats it.

LIVE!!! Right on man. Definitely some subtle differences. Still playing the Ernie Ball Rock N Roll strings.

I like cobalts personally. I used to use d'addario but I felt that they didn't have that long of a life. So I switched over to cobalts and they were much brighter for a longer period of time. That's just my opinion however.

Still now sure why guitarists think strings matter this much. It’s about feel. What ever tonal difference there is could be eq’d in or out with your amp. Just use what you can afford and change them as often as you can and you will be fine regardless what brand, gauge, material you use.

I always use regular versions of Slinkys mostly though I did buy one packet of Colbalts one time ago so I have yet to use them one day.

on the cyclops, is that a roasted maple fretboard? if so, do you like the way it plays? i've never played one, but i love the way they look. as far as the strings, i prefer the cobalts, then heavy bottom slinkys, then m steel.

I'm using the cobalt as well since a couple of months. I'm getting used to it still, but I like it.

I'm between the cobalts and the regular slinkys. They each had a tonal quality that I liked. I didn't really care for the M-Steels. I might need to try slinkys again. I've been using D'addario strings (specifically their NYXL and regular XL range) for years now. I switched because slinkys wouldn't last as long for me as the D'addarios did.

I really dig the Cobalts. Was exclusively using Super Slinky's through the 20 or so years I've been playing, and they always sound great. But the Cobalts have a fuller sound while maintaining note definition. My Strat has Duncan P-Rails, and I love the even tone I get with them both

I generally play some weird gauges (such as the yngwie 8-46 or the dimebag 9-50) what are the available gauges like in these?

I play a Gibson SG for about every style of music ranging from classic rock to metal, and have been for about 20 years. I have always used regular Ernie ball 10-46 or 11-48. I find the colbalt not just sound better than the regular, they stay in tune better. A Gibson SG can have tuning problems, especially on the 3rd and 4th strings due to the massive angle of the headstock. With the cobalts, I stay in tune better, and my strings feel much tighter for metal.Don't let the name "slinky" scare you away from great tone and feel. There I said my two cents, but only because I have ball's.

I've been playing with M-Steels and wauw they really fit my style! Except from being louded and have higher output I find that the clarity between notes and the different strings is unlike any other strings I've tried!
