Ernie Sigley & Denise Drysdale - Hey Paula (1974) 

Makes me sad .. I always loved this version and now Ernie’s gone..

ONE of Mum's all-time favourite entertainers was Ernie Sigley: a TV variety show host, radio presenter, unlikely pop star and even more unlikely sex symbol. She loved his cheeky smile, cuddly appearance and “naughty” sense of humour. Mum especially adored him and Denise “Ding Dong” Drysdale, his co-host on "The Ernie Sigley Show" during the mid-1970s. The pair had amazing on-screen chemistry. Their 1974 chart-topping duet cover of "Hey Paula" is an earworm that has stayed in my head for nearly 50 years. Ernie began his radio career in Melbourne in 1952. He debuted on TV in 1957, a year after it started in Australia. He worked for a time overseas for the BBC and Radio Luxembourg, before returning to Australia and establishing himself as a radio and TV superstar in the 1960s and 70s. He kept working regularly on TV and radio right up until his retirement in 2008. Ernie won 21 TV WEEK Logie Awards in his career, including the 1975 Gold Logie for Australia's most popular television personality. I can't believe he was only 82 - he was actually born two years after my mother - when he passed away on August 15 with Alzheimer’s disease. In 2011, I wrote to Ernie requesting an autographed photo for Mum’s 75th birthday but, sadly, he never replied. When it was announced he had Alzheimer’s in 2016, it made me think that perhaps his mental state had begun declining long before the official diagnosis was made public. I just hope the “Little Aussie Battler” was still with it enough in his final years to appreciate how well his beloved Footscray Football Club (now known as the Western Bulldogs) have done in the AFL.

Ray Hildebrand, the actual "Paul" of Paul and Paula, passed away in August at the age of 82. Ray also wrote this song. RIP Ray Hildebrand (Paul) 1940-2023.
