Thank you! And, I’m with you: I always find myself more attracted to covers that have the energy of Eddie even if they don’t have *exactly* the same notes or phrasing as Eddie. It is VERY hard to achieve both. I’m still working at it.
That was so good. One of the better versions ive heard. Great ear. Great technique. I want to ask for a bit more delay in your tone...but you played so clean it didnt matter.
Thanks, brother! It's funny, this was such a rough "on the spot" take, that I didn't even bother to get the settings right. In fact, I completely forgot to flip on the Phase 90!
That N4 has killer tone! The sheer looseness and natural ability come through in your playing. That's what made Eddie the best rock guitarist of all time. I love Nuno's playing but he doesn't have it. You did good, man, Ed would agree!
It’s a raw guitar, to be sure, and the primary one I play. Has a lot of bite and just sounds downright mean at times. Love both Eddie and Nuno, but agree they are definitely not the same player. For one thing: Nobody swings like Eddie. Thanks for watching, brother!
@@zlobert9877 wow man, I love hearing that. Happy playing, brother. (Fwiw, I had a long hiatus from playing as well - many years, in fact. It’s great to be back at it.)
@@PatFlynnplaysguitar how many years was your hiatus? Because the biggest thing holding me back from playing is the regret for those 8 years, thinking how good i could have been now.
@@zlobert9877 man, it wasn’t much shorter than that. 6-7 years, maybe? And I had the same feeling you do. But here’s the thing: practice hard and your chops will come back quicker than you think. A year from now, you’ll be so glad you picked it back up. I still a little twinge of pain from those “wasted” years, but hey, it’s better to be playing now than not at all, and I know I’d regret it more if I just let the guitar keep sitting there. You got this, brother!
Excellent playing!! The last note that Eddie played (low E harmonic) I think he uses a delay pedal for that. That's what it sounds like. He sets it at a continuous frequency and he turns a dial down slowly to a low E so the note would keep ringing. Other music books say he does a bar dive, but it doesn't sound like it.
Thank you! And yes, I think you're right. It definitely does not sound like a bar dive to me, and I've heard that he used the delay pedal for that somewhere else before. Man, was he creative or what?
@@MrJazuza yeah, late 80s and mid to late 90s were the peak wrestling years for me. I still go back and watch the old pay per views every now and then.
Thank you! Eruption is a monster, and I'm still working hard at mastering it. Best advice I can give is to break it down into very small bits and take each section obnoxiously slowly. From there, while the tune as a whole doesn't fit neatly to a click track, I found using a metronome ramp (RU-vid this) for each section extremely helpful for getting them up to speed. Happy playing!
Funny, because I completely forgot to put the Phase 90 on! Anyway, set up is quite simple, for anyone interested. Friedman PTV2, Echoplex, Hall of Fame Reverb. Guitar is Washburn N4.
Way to rip it up like Eddie! My uncle was a master luthier and actually build Eddie Van Halen a custom acoustic guitar back in the day. Looking forward to the next show with Dan John! Merry Christmas my friend.
Thanks, dude! These days I try to practice about 2 - 3 hours per day. However, I have five children, so I don't always get that amount of practice in : ) Eruption is weird to practice, largely because of Eddie's super quirky (but awesome) manner of playing. For me, I just took each little section and put it to a metronome ramp. The full track doesn't fit well to a metronome, but you can fit various sections just to get them under your fingers, then slowly begin to stitch the entire thing together. I'm still working on it; always so much to improve! Thanks for watching.
@@jimlovett8275 oh man, it’s been so long it’s hard to remember. From what I recall, it was decent coming out of the box, but I did have it professionally set up. Sorry, wish I could remember more!
Thanks, man! I started fairly young but then had a long hiatus. Got back into it several years back and have been practicing hard since. Always so much to improve upon, but I appreciate you watching!
Yo dude, thanks so much! Honestly, set up is pretty basic. I’m using a Friedman PTV2. Pedals are just echoplex and hall of fame reverb through the fx loop. Didn’t even remember to put on my phase 90, haha. Let me know if you want amp settings. Cheers!
Of course, I would respectfully disagree with the idea that getting (and especially playing!) guitar is a waste of time. Even if you don't become a full-time musician, the guitar teaches many important life skills, most especially dedication and discipline to learning a complex craft. Perhaps you could pitch it that way : ) Otherwise, just start saving up, eventually buy yourself a decent entry model, and have at it. You can always study music theory and ear training in the meantime to set a foundation for yourself. Appreciate the kind words, brother!
@@PatFlynnplaysguitar I wasn’t sure if they had a N4 without the Stephens cutaway. I had a N4 back in 97 and it cost 1600 bucks brand new! But I was a kid and traded it up for something that probably wasn’t even as good! Great Guitar Though!
@@bobwalters9151 You know, that' a great question. I'm not sure! I can tell you the fret access on this one is amazing, however. Seriously, it's a hot rod (even as my daily driver!).
Sounded a bit out of tune. 😂 Only kidding, Pat. T'was a stellar go. I appreciate that you capture the dynamics, which so many people ignore, which leaves Eruption feeling flat. You nailed Eddie's attack. What does your signal chain look like? Loved the tone you had here.
Means a lot, me’ dude! Signal chain is pretty basic. I have an echoplex and reverb through the fx loop. I didn’t even remember to plug in my phase 90, haha. Usually, however, I run that into the front of the amp. Otherwise, gain is inappropriately high, with high treble and bass and low mid.
my black 1984 Kramer Striker 300st with German made Floyd Rose, my 80s Marshall Jcm 800 half stack, my old 80s boss and mxr pedals and my Rocktron prophecy rack mount preamp are my favorite pieces of gear! I always prefer the 80s underground metal sound: the best for me! Rock on Man!
I'll see about doing a video. In the meantime, it's a basic set up. Washburn N4. Friedman PTV2, with mids around 10-ish (low!), and bass and treb around 3-ish. Echoplex and Hall of Fame Reverb through FX loop. And that's it!
@@drydeck1 FWIW, this was really just a test video for my new camera and was recorded with the clip on mic. At some point, I'll record a new one with my SM57.
I can’t speak for everyone, but for myself, it’s because Ed is, simply put, the man. Trying to emulate his energy, attitude, phrasing, swing, etc., while impossible to do perfectly, forces you to become a more dynamic guitar player. Plus, it’s just darn fun to play. Why did I post it? Well, I guess because I wanted to share something I had been working on. Not really anything more to it than that. Either way, thanks for watching.
