There are actually 3 songs in this piece: the intro is "Boogie nights" by Heat Wave ('76) the verse&chorus are taken from "All night long" by MaryJane Girls ('83) and the bridge is "Funkin' for Jamaica" by Tom Browne ('80) Erykah's mix of this 3 electro-funk Classics is just awesome ;)

Classique and Funky.... As i said before, these new age singers don't know how to mix the old and the new together, dont know how to how respect or appreciate what musicians and singers from the past did.. they dont know how to sing music from the past and how to make it fresh, relevant, and new... these new age singers, as jesus said on the cross, they dont know what they are doing.... thank God for Ms Badu and her rendition of these great songs on that album...

Nailed the groove. Excellently supportive playing on that album, not to mention that crunchy, growly, brilliant MTD tone!

@Pchychopathetic - I would say they're all drastically different. Fretted vs. fretless. solid body vs. hollowbody vs. small acoustic vs. large acoustic. Flatwouds vs. roundwounds.

Yeah, Ken Lawrence. There aren't a lot of them out there, since Ken builds each one by himself. Each one is custom made to order. He doesn't have a big factory, or a team of people. There are a ton of other top notch basses though. Lakland, Kinal, Alembic, Fodera, Wal, Elrick, Stambaugh, CB, JP, Conklin, Sadowsky, Mike Lull, Marleaux, Bee, Benavente, Ken Bebensee, Aries, FBB, Carvin, Nordstrand, F-Bass, Ritter, MTD, Jerzy Drozd, Zon...and many many more.

Thanks. The 'Brase' model is the one with the handle carved into the horn. I've got about 3-grand in mine, but I bought it used. A new one from Ken would cost quite a bit more, and you would have to wait well over a year to get it. His waiting list is pretty long. You can go through one of Ken's dealers to get in contact with him or to place an order (or check out in-stock basses they might have). LuthiersAccessGroup and Clubbass are the main dealers that I know of.

@pongoid - Thanks. I'm definitely aware of it and typically don't do it. Especially if there is a live drummer or in a recording situation where it would come through and add unnecessary noise. Something about a youtube video (showcasing me, on bass) and playing such a funky, grooving song like this by myself, made me do it, this time :)

this was a nice video, Greg. i haven't heard BADU "Live" in a long time, but this is like three basslines in one. the Boogie Nights joint (nice blues runs on that), into All Night Long (which Rick James, who produced MJG's, lifted from Keni Burke's jam Rising To The Top), then into Tom Browne's Funkin For Jamaica. pretty cool dude!

The meat of this song is All Night Long by the Mary Jane Girls, Rick James' girl group project. Sick playin dude! Faithful to Mr. Eaves' lines and style. Would that I could be as funky.

Yeah, it was Hubert Eaves IV. I haven't heard anything else that he's played on (don't think he has recorded too much), but his bass playing on Baduizm Live is just perfect, in every way!

@daranjeri - It's a custom made Ken Lawrence bass.. I don't have any direct experience with that bass, but I think Ibanez makes some good mid-range basses. In that price range, I would recommend the Yamaha TRB line of basses. Or the Lakland Skyline series (though it's a little more expensive I think).

Eric the riff is from " Funkin' for Jamaica" by Tom Browne. I think the original would have been played on a synth-it's an awsome groove-check it out elsewhere on You Tube.

What is that song at the 4:05 break that plays for about a minute? The bass initially sounds like the slowed-down part from Dre day sampled from Funkadelic, but the song that follows is not either Boogie Nights or All Night Long.
