In this video I just point out the main differences between the Mini Trangia and Esbit alcohol burners. The two main differences are the simmer ring design and the jet design. For anyone interested I also compare the dimensions of each burner with some high-precision digital calipers.

Just received my Trangia stove today via mail. I'm going ahead and ordering the esbit tomorrow due to that nice handle. Thanks for this good thorough video. You sold me on the screen/stand.

Yes, it will. But Trangia has their own Triangle out now which fits the original burner, the gas burner and also the larger military burner. It also have room for simmering with the simmer ring.

Thanks - very helpful as considering Esbit over Trangia for my Clikstand (currently use Trangia Burner but am fearful of one day cooking breakfast and then NOT putting the burner in the daysack for lunch!!!! Thanks again.

No. There has to be a distance between the burner and a pot. The jets are not made to burn if you cover them.

@1jump2many I have not used one, but I've seen a lot of reviews of that stove, and for a while I drooled over the Evernew DX setup. But I'll probably never try one due to the cost. Titanium has a big following due it being lightweight, and I'm sure Evernew makes excellent stuff, but in my opinion there are way cheaper ways to lower your pack weight. I also think titanium is a less-than-ideal material to construct an alcohol stove out of. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Nice video bro. I have an Esbit. What I did is I took a small drill bit and carefully reamed out all of the holes, so that they would be uniform.
@ColoradoCamper
@ColoradoCamper 10 лет назад
Can I ask why you chose to make the holes larger? Does it make the stove burn hotter?
@Shannon_Lacey
@Shannon_Lacey 10 лет назад
It seems to increase the flame size out of the jet holes, and tends to have a more consistent blue flame. I would assume more is good. Lol! I'll have to do a video of this in the future.

Yes, the Esbit simmer ring will fit on a Trangia burner. I don't know if the simmer ring can be purchased separately, but I think it has to be sold somewhere if you look around a bit. Also, a company called ALOCS makes a burner and simmer ring that's identical to the Esbit one, so you can look for that too.

Ok. Fair enough. But as a chartered member of the Church of Trangia it hurts my soul. :D I also own 4 or 5 military burners: SVEA, Eskilstuna, Unmarked and Trangia marked. Good enough burners but not true Trangia burners. Not by a long shot. The so called "mini" is the original and only true Trangia burner - always has been; and I do not beleive they will change the design sometime soon. ;)

Got my Esbit stove in this weekend and the Esbit stove appears to leak fuel when the cap is screwed on, however my Trangia stove does not leak. I have since lubed the rubber O-Ring that is on the screw cap for the Esbit with synthetic mobile 1 oil and will see if that solves the issue. The other difference I noticed is the Esbit stove took 12 minutes to bring 16oz of water to a rolling boil and my Trangia is approx 9 minutes.
@clivenewton7609

These are typical timings for any half decent alcohol stove, this obsession with boil times on stoves is wasting your life!! Listen, On average, given certain environmental conditions the average time for these stoves to bring 1/2 lt (18fl oz) to a boil is 8 min, now please get on with your life and enjoy the great outdoors! 😂

I never weighed them myself, so I can't say for sure. But I've seen other videos say that the Esbit is slightly lighter. Apparently it is made out of brass coated aluminum whereas the Trangia is solid brass.

But if I understand you correctly, without the windscreen you had the pot up to 1.5 inches, so you changed two variables at once. The 1.5 inches might be a bit high, so you might get a faster boil with something between 1.0-1.5 inches. In my experience, wind screens don't do much to help boil times if you are testing in controlled conditions like your garage. In the field, of course, they are essential.

@scoutgogar
@scoutgogar 11 лет назад
Why do you call it "mini trangia"? This is the original trangia burner as it has always been. They did manufacture burners for the army between 61-75 (together with SVEA and Eskilstuna and others) which is larger in size - but they are not trangia burners as such; but specially built to military specs and order.
@ColoradoCamper
@ColoradoCamper 11 лет назад
Checking a couple big online dealers, it seems they are pretty close in price. But the Trangia usually beat out the Esbit by a dollar or two.

I love Trangia burners. But, after awhile, they crack at the edge forcing you change them. Is it from metal fatigue? Now, I'm looking for replacing it by an Esbit or by an Evernew Titanium Alcohol Stove. I'm very disappointed. :-(
@ColoradoCamper
@ColoradoCamper 11 лет назад
That doesn't seem strange to me. In my experience, any gap less than an inch takes painfully long to boil. But it can be hard to decipher because there are just so many variables to control.
@ColoradoCamper
@ColoradoCamper 13 лет назад
@laphroaigdrinker You can do that, but it doesn't fit on the Trangia very tight, so you'd have to be careful not to lose it. I ended up returning the Esbit because it leaks fuel, so I no longer have the simmer ring for it.
@ColoradoCamper
@ColoradoCamper 11 лет назад
I sometimes call it a "mini trangia" because that's what it's sometimes marketed as. I just want everyone to be clear that I'm not talking about the Swedish Army Trangia, which is larger as you said.

@MrItchyElbow I didn't switch to the Esbit, I just think it has a superior simmer ring design. It still gets hot but you can adjust it much easier, even when its hot. But I ended up returning the Esbit because it leaked fuel. The Trangia reigns supreme in the end.

How could you do a "vs." without lighting them both for comparison. Aren't they supposed to perform a function other than fitting into a stand and measuring a certain diameter? Are they supposed to actually cook or is there a second part to this video that I missed?
@ColoradoCamper
@ColoradoCamper 10 лет назад
The purpose of this video was to point out the different design features and dimensions of the two burners. What the hell good would it do just to light them? You can't judge the performance based on just looking at the flame. I would have had to do controlled boil tests on each one to compare the flame performance as far as cooking, and that is way beyond the scope of this video. This video was primarily so that people could determine which critical dimensions were different and which components were different before buying them. It was not to show which one is the winner and it was not a review. Nonetheless, thanks for your comment, but next time perhaps you could be less of a wise ass.
@silvanigra
@silvanigra 5 лет назад
Just what I was going to say! Some people miss the main point of reviewing a product. First and foremost this is a stove/burner. Size and design are secondary to its main function (burning/cooking!) which appears to have been completely ignored here.

Hello from Arizona I enjoyed your video comparison on the Trangia and the Esbit Stoves. I just ordered an Esbit stove and another Trangia Stove. The Trangia has a winter attachment on the bottom of the stove. I was wondering if you had done a side by side burn and boil comparison? Also have you a weight comparison? Keep up the video, I enjoy your vids. Thank You, Brent, Flagstaff, Arizona
@ColoradoCamper

I don't have a weight comparison, nor have I done side-by-side burn and boil tests. However, I know of a great channel here that should have all of the information you need, if you're willing to search a little. Here it is: ru-vid.com Try searching his videos for "Trangia" and "ALOCS" and you should find what you're looking for. The ALOCS burner is identical to the Esbit. I hope that helps you.

I think any Esbit stand that is built to hold their brass burner would also fit the mini trangia.
@scoutgogar
@scoutgogar 11 лет назад
Yup, but Trangia ripped them of right back and made their own "Triangle" which is larger and has room for the snuffer lid... Hmm, one might like the larger stand on the Esbit Triangle and I'll give them cudos for the handle on their snuffer lid... But NO, I will not trade my Trangia. Period!

It leaked from the seal when I screwed the lid on after leaving fuel inside to save for later. I don't think there's any benefit to the different hole size. If there is, it would be minimal. The Esbit is similar in size to the mini Trangia. Thank you for watching, and let me know if you have any further questions.

Since you have experience with both the trangia and esbit stoves, I am wondering will your modified westwind stand work with a snowpeak mini solo (which I believe has a diameter of 4.25"). vutEwa Given that Esbit as a company was created in 1938, a decade+ after Trangia was released, going to have to call bullshit. Also, according to Esbit’s own website, their version came out in 2008. I suspect that Trangia’s trademark expired, thus why Esbit came out with their knockoff. It’s tacky, even if legal, and makes me want to avoid Esbit.

What?? My Trangia 25 is 40 + years and so is the burner. Never any sign of fatigue or leaking at all. Ok, I'll give you that after 40 years of use I have had to clean out the jets with a needle due to use of sooting fuel and replace the rubber ring due to drying out... But never any failure in material or workmanship of the burner. Call Trangia in Trångsviken, Sweden and they will probably replace it free of charge. The burner DO NOT fail.
