A phenomenal read. Props to the reader for taking the time to read this for those who prefer audio books. Becker was in my view one of the greatest philosophers of the modern era. Despite him having died decades before I was born, I cannot help but mourn that we lost such a great mind so young.

Narrating an audiobook is quite difficult and this amateur did a better job than experienced professionals on Audible. Excellent work.

Thank you for reading this. You have done it so well. I have to take in small chunks half an hour or so and then take a break. Contemplate, or listen to some music for a while, then reverse back 10 minutes and continue. So much wisdom here. Strange how meaningful it is to me and yet some people I have suggested it to say its boring.

I tried doing this a few times with The Devil All the Time by Donald Pollock. As someone who's attempted to do this it's really harder than it looks . Good job on the audio .

Thanks. You read this really well. Almost as good as a pro. Your voice is really animated and full of the authors meaning even though this is a really difficult book - I don't understand it all and I'm quite a bit older than you so I doubt you do. Somehow you manage to express it well - the machine voices are getting better but this is somewhat better than the best of them. Recommended.

The reader in The birth of meaning in audible is almost un listenable. The reader has some kind of speach problem. It is painful to listen to.

Don't bring Becker up at Christmas , it will only destroy the holiday , just like when you brought up Morbid Angel in the late 80s. Great job on the book.

Denial of death hits harder than this text, I can see why he didn't want it published
@mr1001nights
@mr1001nights Год назад
Actually, several people I know (including myself) who are familiar with Becker’s work, end up saying that this work “hits” them at least as hard. DoD focuses more on the individual aspects of death denial. EfE more on the social angle, which is ultimately the more powerful one- especially in describing its history since prehistoric times, which is not done in DoD. My guess is that he didn’t want it published because he didn’t have enough time or energy to write some parts of it to his highest standard. But EfE still has tremendous insights and is overall written in a more straightforward, somewhat simplified language than DoD, which clarifies his ideas for many people.
@rstulby
@rstulby Год назад
@@mr1001nights we can agree to disagree. his arguments in dod are much stronger and more detailed. It bothers me that parts of EfE were removed by his wife.

@@rstulby have you actually read or listened to EfE in its entirety? what I’ve been doing for years is to locate/isolate the main insights of each book - their most informative and striking quotes and paragraphs, and then compare them. Not sure if you have devoted this kind of time to Becker’s work, but I can tell you that in my judgment they are equally impactful and insightful; and what’s more important: they complement each other, as Becker himself makes clear in the preface. There’s also a less talked about book that contains insights that complement both DoD & EfE, and that is the last edition of The Birth and Death of Meaning. To understand the depth of death denial in our lives one needs to read all three books and familiarize oneself with studies in terror management theory. The book The Worm at the Core is a good synthesis, even though it’s almost 10 years old by now. Google scholar is always adding new TMT studies though. There’s over 2500 at this point. The one area where I agree with you is that parts of EfE are not written to Becker’s highest standards, and I could sense the efforts of his wife, and the other editor to “patch up” certain pages that he couldn’t finish due to his terminal cancer condition.
