those of you who have reached mid/high stakes - what have you done to get there? those of you who will get there soon - what steps are you taking to leave low stakes behind?

Larger value sizing, magnitude over frequency, attack weak lines and sizing, at low stakes, bet size usualling = hand strength. Fold and fold alot, especially when getting raised on the river by a weak player. Don't overvalue blockers, player profile is more important than if you block nuts or have good bluff catching hand, if they are never finding bluffs in this spot, it doesnt matter. Have few important thought rather than alot of thoughts that doesnt swing EV that much and can complicate your decision making process. Be sensitive to stack sizes, smaller 3b and 4b against short stacks, check more oop to give them opportunity to make mistakes.

I mostly play 100NL online. I will soon be playing 200NL, because I am now deep diving into different flops and developing heuristics. I continuation bet and just bet too often in general, but people are reluctant to raise enough that it doesn't matter. I don't actually over bet all that much like other players because people are already over folding to smaller sizes that I don't have to do that. I have some pretty cool exploits that I use and have been winning 6BB/100+ for over 200k hands. 200NL is a bit intimidating because players are a lot better there than 100NL.

For my part, to incresse my earning my main focus is notably but not exclusively, understading and masterising to understand in real time when Vilain's are cap or not depending on player type and board texture (both being in my point of view important to consider because of their complementarity)

@@wilz9388 The bit about folding to weak players raising rivers is so, so, so true. Playing last night and someone I consider a decent reg is in a hand with a bad fish. Without going into too much detail, final board is KK73Q. Reg is OOP and bets $125 on the river (about pot); fish raises to 500. Reg is in pain and says I have to call. Reg shows 33; fish has KQ. This is a snap fold to the raise.

This is absolutely true, and all the strategies mentioned are spot-on. I've spent a lot of time testing big bets and small raises on the flop against recreational players, fish, and passive opponents. I've also found that using large bets on capped rivers against tight or very passive players is nearly always effective.

Re: 8:37, I think it's partially an inability of recognizing the scare card for the villains range that passivizes players. If you can't tell whether the straight-making 3 or the two-pair-making ace is a good or bad card for you to bluff the river with, you're often going to blow off your stack when you get it wrong.

Killer video. Outstanding. I hear you about getting the money in more. I understand the logic. But losing sucks. Can you talk about “bouncing back” after making, we’ll say, good decisions to put in the “big boy overbet bluff” and being wrong? Bc that sucks. How about talking about times you bluff at the wrong time and you walk into a monster. I guess I’m wanting to hear that “losing your stack is ok if the decision making process is correct” or something to that effect. It just feels like such an uphill climb if you bluff/punt off a bullet and need to get back in it. Thoughts?
@ekw555
@ekw555 Месяц назад
I am not particularly good at poker, but I am going to butt in w/ an answer anyway. feel free to apply a bag of salt (as opposed to a grain). when your bluff fails was it because they called w/ a (very) good hand ? remember - you are bluffing against the opponent's range, and trying to get them to fold the lower part of their range that would still beat you (overcards, pair type hands), or sometimes even better hands that the board has devalued (straights on a flush or paired board, 2 pair when a straight comes in, a weak flush on a four flush, a flush on a paired board) your goal was never to get them to fold the (near) nuts. and sometimes, they have the (near) nuts. it sounds like that's what you're saying. and unless their play up to the river was screaming "I HAVE THE NUTS", your bluff was probably "ok" or even "good". (can't really say w/o seeing action, board, stacks, and well, everything. on the other hand - I got called by 22 on a board w/ 3 broadway cards the other night (online). so, my feeling was - either my sizing was terrible, or my line must have been utter nonsense, or my player read was bad. because he showed down a FAR WORSE hand than I was trying to get to fold. and that *is* on me. but, running into a monster happens. super loose players call preflop w/ Q3o and flop is 333. Shit happens. but if you're bluffing nits on boards that smash their range . . . mistakes are being made. anyway - "losing your stack IS OK if your decision making process is correct". BUT - make sure you are reviewing every aspect of your decision(s) honestly, and not just soothing your ego/psyche.

great great great question. here’s how i look at: the higher your winrate overall, the less volatility you will have as far as “downswings”. if you consistently are putting in money, you will swing more session to session and week to week, but if you’re making +ev plays and willing to risk $1000 for another $5 marginal ev, well… your wr will be so high you will never truly experience downswings over decent samples. my first 2k hours playing poker full time were at the $5 blind level. i wasn’t great then, but i won around 15bb/hr and played absolutely wild. never went on a downswing larger than 5k.

Fantastic stuff as usual! In the situation where you were discussing the calling range after opening button and having the BB 3bet, how sensitive is the calling range to the 3B sizing? I’m routinely seeing fish virtually min-click their 3bets to 2x or maybe 2.5x even with AA and KK. I definitely like the exploit of exploitatively folding hands like A2s to 3x or larger raises, but what is your thinking when raises are pretty tiny?
@hungryhorsepoker
@hungryhorsepoker Месяц назад
depends so much on the player, hard to say in a vacuum! if they’re using small sizes with aa and kk, i’d be calling with almost anything trying to hit 2p+ when deep.

on the flop 76s - my opponents *never* raise here, theyre not raising sets, theyre waiting for a "safe" turn to check-raise, when I bet big on the turn I get owned a lot, they get to play perfectly... raise when they have the nuts, fold when they dont. I cant find a size on the flop where they raise their best and call their worst, because my villains are way too passive to check/raise flops. its also extremely rare for me to be 200bb deep effective, idk how much that matters. Most of my opponents are "put another 20 in the slot machine" types. To me the proper response seems like to be sit at the table playing like an absolute nit, wait for nutted hands and make thin value bets, folding to aggression. It works but its not very exploitive and it seems high-variance. I'm just playing bingo with a mild range advantage, trying to realize my equity. Sucks. TLDR; what do I do on the flop when my bet just doesnt cap anyone, ever? Check more flops, bet when I have some level of showdown/big draw value (that seems bad, they call way too wide on flop and check fold flops a lot)? Bet/fold more turns instead of checking them through, shove rivers? I guess that makes sense... if flop bets dont cap them, then turn bets do... shove rivers. Feel like Im gonna run into a lot of random-ass Q8o two pairs though

maybe! either they’re calling with top pair for 200+bb, which means you can jam much more for super thin value when you have tpgk or they’re folding too much with top pair, which means you can jam every time you don’t have sdv one of these things has to be true! it’s on you to figure out which villains to apply which strategy

What the hell do you mean? Disrespectful fold? Are you talking code language or am i really just failing here? First it seems like what tou trying to say is that we’re not playing A2s enough. Than you talk about “disrespectful fold” folding AQ. I dont get it.

@@hungryhorsepoker ok but for real now I’ve been using these strategies and they’ve immeasurably improved my hand reading abilities and my win rate. It’s also made it much easier to bluff decent regs when I have position. It’s made me pay attention more to how most people even if they aren’t fish play their cards face up and actually made grinding online hands more fun

What i learned from this: Dont listen to *ANY* of these ppl claiming to "teach" you poker. Bet your azz they'll never "teach" you how to beat them at poker. They will only ever teach you how to lose to them. Period. So go out there, play your own game. Don't listen to anyone that believes they have "solved" poker. Because they're fulla shid. Trial and error and luck. Thats poker. Unless you know exactly what card is coming on the flop turn and river and you know what your opp is holding, you know nothing. Any card can come. Any hand can win at any time. And it ain't poker til 5th street. Remember that and good luck.

@hungryhorsepoker so wait…I was under the impression that $2-$5 was infinitely tougher than $1-$2/$1-$3? But you’re saying that the guys @ $2-$5 don’t even know what a range advantage is. Is $2-$5 that soft??? Seems like every time I go to play $1-$3 and I look over at the $2-$5 games the guys sitting 2-5 just look to be way smarter lol
