I like that he uses the gear for a while before giving a final score. A friend of mine purchased a really nice backpack last autumn and one of the shoulder straps snapped at the seams (on the foam padding tip). This was right after filling it up and test fitting minutes before heading out the door. So i advice people to do a few rounds along a road with all the gear you're bringing to test the quality a few days before heading out. And also inspect the stitching before a purchase i think. (NB: My friend could have exceeded the weight limit on his pack, but we didn't test this).
@beachamboy11
@beachamboy11 4 года назад
Coffee Jack The only way you should be able to exceed the weight limit on a pack is by filling it with rocks or led bars. The pack should be able to hold as much gear as you can stuff into it and then some. I used a 45L Walmart pack for years with no issues and I stuffed it to max capacity almost every trip. Sounds like your friend got a crappy pack.

I'm in Western, NY where my State now has almost 12,000 cases now of Covid-19. I have more than 60 acres of woods out behind my house. It looks like it will be the only place to do all my outdoor activities this year, but I am thankful I'm not in a big city. Great video Luke,.I can't wait for it to warm up to get out & about.

Awesome video. Having served in the Military all over the world for 25 years, and 50 years roaming the woods, I've seen many depressions. If any Civil War battles were fought on that mountain, it could be a sunken fighting position (foxhole), seems too big for a old grave site, and the worst case could be the remains of a old home site "3 seater" outhouse slit trench!

Luke, I was on a hike in the deep woods once and found a hole in the ground similar to the one you found. A few yards from the hole was some old barrels with ax marks in them. After I got home I asked my Grandad what he thought that might have been and he told me it was an old moonshine still that had been busted up by the sheriff's dept. years ago. Could be what you found too.

"Land Subsidence" is a gradual settling or sudden sinking of the Earth's surface owing to subsurface movement of earth materials. The principal causes of land subsidence are aquifer-system compaction, drainage of organic soils, underground mining, hydrocompaction, natural compaction, sinkholes, and thawing permafrost. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subsidence

Another excellent installment. If I could swing it, I'd grab my son, some cash, and lots of food and head to Pisgah. It looks quite wonderful. Your tidbits of wisdom amid the atmosphere of fear and confusion are welcome, to be sure. These images are refreshing and well received. Thank you for what you do. The depression you pointed out is likely a sinkhole or a washout where a tree once grew. I'm sure dear Susie was watching anxiously when you began to shed the sweater and say "it's getting hot" lol Keep up the good work and thank you for the example you set. Integrity is refreshing. Keep doing what you do. S&H.

The hole would be about the right size for a "cochon de lait" or pig roast, roasting the pig in a pit covered with coals. I like the water filter. Tent looks real light. You could get some of those "Hot Hands" from the Wally to warm up your frozen snack. They get pretty warm pretty quick and last a few minutes. They also spontaneously reheat when handled again. Coffee sounds like just the ticket for the time and place. Thanks for having us along.

Luke, when in unfamiliar territory, and on a time restriction, better to stick to known trail. I have been lost in those mountains as a 13 yo boy. I thought I was utterly familiar with my mountain. Well, I still had some learning to do. Whew... The story is too long. I’m 63 now, obviously made it home. I ended up walking clean off the mountain and halfway across the valley before I found a house to ask for a phone. It was late and Mom was not happy, especially when she heard where I ended up. Thanks for the great adventure and super video. Texas

The depression in the ground that you found looks like something was buried their. This is what it usually looks like after you dig up the ground and, then replace the soil over whatever has been buried. Weapons cache, survival stash? - Body? If it's a body you can keep it but, if it is a weapons cache or survival stash you have to split it with me. 17:36 That deep impression filled with leaves is a typical Big Foot or Sasquatch nest. They often dig impressions in the ground, and then fill with leaves and or small evergreen branches to make a bed. I saw these myself. Did not know what they were until I did my own research some 50 years later. My siblings and I accidentally were tree knocking with one as children, and doing "whoop whoops" with one, accidentally leaving it peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. IT would leave us small piles of pretty rocks. This happened over a 10 year period of time in the Coastal Rain Forest near a camp grounds, in a restricted area. It made the forest rangers nervous we went up there, chargringed we never got hurt, and never SAW anything, but upset them when we told them about our activities, and tree knocking. Fifty years later now I know why. Now I know why there were shifts of forest rangers patrolling the camp grounds 24/7 in groups of three in these little carts. I swear one of them always had a riffle slung on his back. YET there was never any mention of bears. So they were patrolling the camping area to make sure the LOCAL big foot stayed in the resricted area. They aer shy aminals and avoid humans at all costs. apparently enjoy children and do not bother them. I guess. YOU tell me. All I know is what WE experienced for more than 10 years. But one thing I do remember too, is seeing two of these beds! WE never messed with them either. Good thing. if you do not mess with them, they will leave you alone. For someone who does not believe in them, your videos continue to show proof that you are not alone in the woods. But the way you conduct yourself, you are safe. AS you respect the forest, so if a Big Foot did come to your camp it would be out of curiosity, and not to harm you. So I would ignore it, and not respond to it, other than to leave it a present of peanut butter. It would appreciate the gesture of friendship. It might leave you a present.

Moonshine still hole. I grew up in the Francis Marion Forrest in the Low Country of SC. There are a lot of these man made holes throughout the Carolinas and Georgia. Moonshiners would build their stills in a hole to minimize/hide the profile of the still. We had a horse farm with several of these just inside the woodline. I once found a double barrel shot gun leaning against a a tree next to one of these holes.

It's the remains of an old sawpit, they can be visible for centuries after use. Two sawyers would operate the pit using a cross cut saw, one below the log (in the pit), and the other, called "top dog", above the log. Originally it would have been much deeper, but they silt up with time.

Those depressions you see are likely caused from limestone below-ground fracturing due to water seeping into cracks and causing the Limestone to break apart Underground. Once that breaks apart there's nothing left supporting the soil above it, and it sinks creating a hole. It's very common here in Indiana. We see it all the time and that is what is causing it.

To me the depression in the ground looks like an old latrine or garbage pit from the settlers. We find them around oregon a lot. As for a fight position like many have said their would be more around if that were the case and the angle is off. It doesn't look like a hasty grave or cattle pit. So I'd say it looks like a trash pit.

Judging on the hole size, it's an old grave site that has been dug up, grave robbing used to be much more common. People would get buried with jewelry and other valuables often near where they died and later someone would come back and dig it up. Being in a hurry or lazy they would partially fill the hole back in.

The hole in the woods. Maybe a cellar hole from an old house a hundred or two hundred years ago. That plot of land looks like a great place to have built a house. I do a lot of treasure hunting (metal detecting), and that’s what came to my mind when I saw it.

The hole looks like a "Kelly Hole". In northern Wisconsin they are left over from logging operations. A kind of borrow pit to fill in another low spot. I am not sure but, Kelly probably got the short stick, and had to do all the crap jobs. Keep up the great job!

I think it could have been a big oak tree that fail probably 50 to 100 years ago left a crater or could it be a graveside 🤔

I have seen them just like that where a huge old tree was blown down and you could still see some of the tree remains. All the area where Luke is looks like fairly young growth so once upon a time there had to be huge seed trees.

Luke I think you should try to follow the spur.Trust your instincts. See if you can find your way back to the main trail and then to the parking lot. You & banana Susie stay well!
