In this episode, we explore one of the most audacious escapes from East Berlin during the Cold War: Tunnel 57. 57 East Germans fled to freedom through a tunnel dug by West German college students, directly under the Berlin Wall fortifications. This incredible story of bravery and ingenuity shows the lengths people will go to for freedom.
Only the first night of escapes was covered in this video. Here’s some more information on the second night:
Some of the organizers of the tunnel, known as couriers, had made contact with 120 people in East Berlin and planned their escape. These couriers would bring them to the apartment building at 55 Strelitzer Straße and into the courtyard, where Reinhard Furrer would show them the tunnel entrance in the disused outhouse. Among those 120 people planned to escape was a collaborator with the Stasi, the East German secret police.
On October 4th, around midnight, on the second night of fleeing, two Stasi officers in plain clothes presented themselves at the entrance, claiming they wanted to flee and bring a friend along. When they returned, they were not with a friend, but with border guards. One of the helpers, Christian Zobel, shot at the guards, hitting Egon Schultz in the shoulder. Schultz fell to the ground and, while trying to get up, was fatally shot by friendly fire from one of his fellow officers.
