In this series I meet other photographers and individuals who have a story to tell. I travel around the country to hear these stories and talk about how creative pursuits like photography, and doing the things we love can play a great part in maintaining our own mental wellbeing.
1 in 4 people in the UK are affected by mental health issues but the stories are often hidden from view - the more we talk about these things the more normal it becomes, and the easier it is to get help and help ourselves.
In this video I meet Chris Nowell, a landscape photographer who happens to be the only registered blind landscape photographer in the Peak District! He shares his story of how he was injured in Afghanistan and how the injury lead him to find his love of photography.
Overcoming the challenges Chris has faced is no mean feat, and he now pays back by doing some great work with Blind Veterans UK, but photography for him is much like for myself - an escape, a place to relax, an place to enjoy the beautiful world we live in.
Thank you for listening to Chris's story.

I too use photography to enable me to escape. I too am trapped n the cooperate loop. My mental health issues stem from a disturbed and violent childhood and walk side by side with me every day. I do not accept sympathy as i find this is the catalyst for inward sorrow and negative reflection. Throughout my childhood, teens and adult life I believed I was different than everyone else and in a bubble. The way I dealt with this did not show the better side if me. I am 1 year off 60 and have been given the answer; I have been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and ADHD. This has answered many questions for me. My photography enables me time to absorb and analyse my life; past, present and future. when I am in the woodlands I am alone, no one can affect me there. I too will be starting a Vlog in the new year highlighting my journey through landscape photography. I qualified as a photography 6 years ago but never took it serious. I've done weddings, studio work, charity functions and events. Im not a fan of lots of people, (Aspergers trait) . Since my diagnosis I have been able to understand my functioning and my reasons behind my thoughts and behaviour. This is like a rebirth and is enabling me to focus on what i want, rather than what others around believe I should be doing. I am a professional Trainer and a qualified teacher, cooperate life is draining me. Your videos have inspired me, please continue, there are many more of us out there.

What an inspiration. I sit here on my couch and think of a thousand reasons why I can't go out and shoot pictures. I need to count my blessings and get out there. Thank you Chris and David.

Nicely produced episode, David! Think you invented a very good and unique format. You have balanced very well with the two topics mental health and landscape photography. Especially your b-roll supports this. This is going to become something big and very special. Cheers, Max
