In this series, we are going on a journey of testing out affordable watercolor brushes from around the world. Find the brush that best matches your paint brush needs! In this episode we test the Escoda Perla watercolor brush in round size 10.
We're going to test its water load, how they handle going up and down on paper, max brush width, belly drag, how thin a line it can do, painting leaf, snaking, wash, gradation, lift and dashes.

This was just the review I needed to make a decision on this brush. You give such thorough, excellent reviews and though we can never be sure we won’t get a brush like the “buggered” Escoda Prado you reviewed, we can be sure that you’ll always provide a review that allows us to make the most informed decision possible. Let me also thank you yet again for the pigment database you have made possible for anyone that needs info about the watercolors that would make our brush purchases pointless without. Thank you very much for this review! I've discovered I'm very much a fan of "snappy" brushes and had been eyeing the Perla line. Seeing how precise the control is I think I'll definitely have to check them out.

If you haven't gotten them already, they really are great brushes! My one complaint with them is that I don't like long tips, as it causes drag. If you have the same preference, try Kremer Toray brushes - they're seriously amazing. They're also made with the Toray fiber, so they have the same qualities as Dr. Oto Kano described, but with a shorter tip. It's like painting with a brush pen; you have so much control. Toray fiber makes a brush a dream to paint with. :)

Hi! Thank you for your channel, I have learned so much and I have my degree in art! Have you ever reviewed any Tintoretto or da Vinci brushes? They have become my favorites in the last year or so and I am curious to hear what you think. I only use synthetic brushes, so that’s what I would be interested in. I have some of these are they are great for synthetic brushes. I have heard that Jackson's house brand is made by Escoda and is cheaper.

I ordered the Jackson’s travel brushes called artica, they are made in Barcelona, and they are exactly the same as the Perla. They are really nice, and a very good price.

@@starr-starr was just searching Jackson’s for Artica but I can’t find them. Please help. Sadly, I purchased an Escoda size 2 Versàtil Travel brush but must have received a complete dud. It won’t hold a tip for the life of me. I’ve tried cleaning it, conditioning it, hairspray, and everything else. I’m sooo disappointed! I was in the middle of moving and didn’t get a chance to try it until it was well past time to return it… now I’m a little gun-shy to buy another. It’s not very often I buy myself something nice…

@starr-starr, nice to know. I have an Escoda Perla #6 round, and it is one of the few full synthetic brushes that I like. I am currently looking for a nice travel brush, and a travel set of these would be nice...

Thank you for the review! I got some of the smaller brushes from these series for both my partner (for modelling) and for me (watercolours) and we love them! But after this review I'm sure I'll get some bigger ones too!

I’ve been contemplating buying the set of these ore a single Perla brush for about 2 years now, give or take. Congratulations; you’ve make up my mind! Bad news though: you’ve cost me money 🤪🤣 But back on a serious note: thank you for the ultimate screen-friendly test that really shows us viewers whether or or not to get this brush (or a tube of paint or all else you compare/review or do, I so love your thoroughness and admire the amount/intensity of all those tests and more). Wish I could be a patreon member or support you in any other way but will need to settle on the thumbs up and comments. I know that can make a difference so I will get myself more involved in the comments-section because I really can not believe any artist (amateur, hobbyist or pro) to not benefit from your videos that cover their interests. As always, a big thank you. Sidenote: I’ve already made up my mind that I will be happy with these and I will buy them from the first time I’ve watched this video. Then I had to walk (indoors) while continuing to watch znd it started back from the beginning after almost reaching the end. Needed my hands so left it playing znd enjoyed watching it again. And then, before I could respond (speed of the picture of a horse instead of the speed of the horse itself I guess), it jumped to the next video (which I enjoyed just as well) but anyway, after that next one, I just had to come back to it to like the vid. and write this comment. Lol

@@mb3938 when I wanted to buy the price had gone up so waited and still haven’t found a good one to buy considering it was almost double the price due to shipping costs. Still looking to buy though. I since have ordered other travel brushes that also caught my eye from Jacksonart after I had been contemplating for too long which ones to get from the Escoda Perla and before I knew it the promo sales for Escoda were over 🙈 - in case you’re wondering, I bought a travel Silver Brush Black Velvet which I absolutely love, wanted a flat one so bought the Pro Arte flat travel brush which turned out bigger than I thought it would be and I do like it even more because it is that big and a small size sable brush for details since I haven’t liked the synthetic/cheap ones, don’t like the Winsor and Newton travel brush size 2 that comes with several of the W&N travel sized watercolor sets either so I wanted to try out one with real hair, still feel dubious about having bought it and feel this unrealistic urge to saver this brush by not using it unless I paint something special so haven’t really tested it out yet, can’t even remember the name 🙈 I don’t mind using animal byproducts that can be made without the inhuman ways they’re often treated but honestly don’t know enough about their progress to mind/not mind buying and using real animal hair brushes and don’t really want to get others (the 2 exceptions being the Sliver brush Black Velvet and the Da Vinci Cosmotop mix B -I have the normal Cosmotop Spin dagger brushes, so the red barrel ones and absolutely love them so wanted the mix B ones a try, dr. Oto Kano has tested that one in episode 8). In all honesty I keep jumping from sizes that I would want (I just want way to much 😅) to most complete my collection now but I also would love to try the Escoda Versàtil since fellow RU-vidr Irit (Landgraff or something like that?) likes that one. When my mop brushes and Chinese goat and/or sheep brushes are worn down I’d love to try the Escoda Último but for know I only -still- want the Perla and Versatìl Sorry, not really an answer you were looking for 😅

Escoda perla brush is a good brush for gouache. I dont like it for watercolors. Escoda makes perfect brushes i love them!

I don't like using hair brushes with watercolor inks, gouache or masking fluid. Since it's maybe nylon, do you think it'll be damaged by any of these three over time? Great review and I like the test sheet. Very thorough! 🥰 Cheryl

Thank you so much for the in depth review. How would you say does this compare to the Pro Arte Prolene Plus brush you've tested? I'm thinking about getting one of these as a travel version and am not sure which.

Did you have problems getting blue out if the brush. I tried everything and couldn’t get it out.

Wonder how it compares to the w&n cotman 111 series round. That's what I've mainly been using (plus some random crafty stuff I already had). It was the cheap synthetic but still looks pretty good option available to me at my local store.
