I agree with you about having a proper striker paired with a ferro rod. Relying on the spine of a knife is lowkey dangerous and I hate getting charred bits of metal on the area of my knife where my thumb likes to rest
@Andy-walkaboutnutty
@Andy-walkaboutnutty Год назад
Yer, some things just belong together, a ferro rod and steel striker is a must have 👍. Loose one, then you can use a knife or parts of a pen knife for a striker.

I think they call those sheath’s ‘clamshell’ . I got the rat7 with a custom sheath and the esee6 CM on the way in the mail. Esee and Tops are the best 1095 blades ever.

I like the slim type sheath with no bulk sticking out, it slips in a full rucksack pouch quite nicely. Thanks for watching 👍

Yeah you’ll be hard pressed to get sparks with that coating but some people sand off a little bit of the spine just for the ferro rods. I don’t use my knives for that ever, I have a few other scrapers, old saws and stuff. Nice video mate 👏

Thank you for the compliment richroc7, I'm happy with black coatings, living in a damp country, and it just looks good, I think. 👍

On a day like this where you get a fire started next fire mentality is key when you're fire prepping so your current fire is drying your materials for the next fire.

Handy knife Andy - it sure can take some abuse but no sparks from it. Yeah, you don't want it slipping either - you'd be in another survival situation otherwise. Well, thanks for sharing. Have a good weekend. Mark

Cheers mark, it's a great tough knife, the handle is a rectangular shape when looking down the length instead of a slightly bulbous shape like the grip of a hand, no sparks is not really a problem, I always have a steel with a fero rod. after the quality and design the next important thing is the ability to make feather sticks I think and that's down to the cut of the blade but yes it's good.

4:23 Weight? 5:36 Thanks for being honest about this knife's modest chopping ability. For such a long knife, it's very light, and most weight is in the handle - not ideal for a chopper. 8:43 The wood you did the batoning on is fine for the 6, but when you get some tough or knotty wood it will take a lot more strain because the blade is quite thin and the flat grind means there is not much to displace the wood outwards (as you demonstrated). I'd say that size wood is about its limit. 10:37 Sparks - Nope, not without doing a mod on the spine, which will then be very prone to rusting. 14:41 Feathersticks. The knife will do feathersticks about as well as most knives that size, so no problem there. 18:54 Hot spot. I've heard from others as well that with a fair bit of work hot spots are almost inevitable with the shape of the handle scales. Also, I hear that they become very slippery in the wet. Your experience with the 6 confirms my own impression of the knife. I have difficulty fitting it in anywhere. As a Large knife it is far too thin and light, but of adequate (just!) length. It can't do the things one relies on a Large knife to do easily, and thus the user will have hand issues due to undue effort being needed to get certain work done. So, as a Large knife it's a bit underwhelming. As a belt/survival knife it fairs a bit better, but its long length (11,5 inches) and 12 oz weight is a bit big for that class of knife. [A Cold Steel SRK, for example, is a good inch shorter and 4 ounces lighter for the same length cutting edge. As the SRK is the benchmark knife in this class, the 6 under-performs here as well. So, that's why I say I don't see it fitting in that easily. Of course, it will have some general-purpose abilities that will appeal to many people so I'm sure it will be a good seller. Thanks for a well-balanced assessment. Cheers mate!

You could chamfer the edges carefully with a sander on that handle.

I have a CS Survivalist for about €90,-- Now, I really like the looks of Esee6 a lot, but they cost more than 2 times the price, about €210,-- over here. Sincere question : Is the Esee6 really 2 times 'better'? Stronger? Tougher? Stays sharp longer? Or are there better options for that kind of money? Thanks in advance to all responders! I googled cs survivalist, and the closest I got was cold steel drop forged survivalist. I'm not sure if that's what you've got. I have the srk cold steel and going by that, I would say no to your question. Double the price doesn't mean Double the quality. The esee 6 is good, and the sheath is OK, but it has no combat ability, clipped point. The handle isn't ergonomic on the sides. It's rectangular when looking down on it, and it affected my crutch of my hand between the thumb and finger, which took some of my strength away with a small pain. That's the real reason I made a video on wrapping paracord on a knife handle and chose the esee 6 to make it. I hope this answers your question. There's 100s of knives out there, and it can be a nightmare finding the right one.

Nice review of my favorite large knife. The Knife Connection sells aftermarket scales for the ESEE 6, which are a bit more contoured for grip than the stock micarta handles.

The trousers are vidda pro by fjallraven, and the beanie has no name, just a wool cap also by fjallraven and was bought online. The trousers are very good and are quite popular with the bushcraft community, and both are used and would buy again. Thanks for the subscription, and I hope you enjoyed the video 👍

Shouldn't be chopping. Impacting your edge is never the wise choice. At least if you baton then you're impacting the spine which is much thicker and tougher. Battoning is the way to go on that larger tree as well. Takes half the effort, and is safer, and much easier on your edge.
@Andy-walkaboutnutty
@Andy-walkaboutnutty 2 года назад
