Very neat video, I feel like I learned a lot. Most importantly I was looking for a good wick for my Dietz Jupiter, I had seen so many bad reviews for the ones on Amazon but no one wanted to give an alternative that was good. I am off to order some Hatterley wicks thank you.

I’ve got a round wick lamp like the last one you show here and can’t get much light out of it. I’m using paraffin oil and an old wick that came on it that doesn’t feel hardened or overly dry. Do I need to be using kerosene?
@greghall_The_TechEditor
@greghall_The_TechEditor 10 месяцев назад
Paraffin is liquid wax and is too thick for a center draft lamp. Use Kerosene, Kleen Heat, or Mineral Spirits. Kleen Heat & Mineral Spirits gives the best light w/o smoking.

Good info.. Miles is the man. I collect and burn all sorts of lamps. The Queen Ann vs Eagle is interesting.. I’m going to observe that in my burnings. What do you think of the White Flame burners with the metal mantle technology..I think they give the best burn. Thanks I’ll b watching for more.

I just got a plume and Atwood eagle lamp yesterday for 3 dollars. Getting different wicks as the current old one isnt holding a burn. Im converting it to use olive oil. All trial and error but i want it to be clean and renewable for in house use on Friday night. I heard theh can run a lot of hours on a small amount of oil.
@grivolas2144

I get more light out of my queen ann and my #1 queen ann comes close to my #2 eagle. I think performance has a lot to do with how the wick is trimmed and that varies with the style of burner. One of the better videos I've seen. You need to find youself a kosmos lamp. They are like a center draft but instead of a flame spreader the globe pinches the flame together into a bright point.

Hi me again. Can you possibly look into paraffin oil for lamps and why it doesn’t work so well for certain wicks or fonts. I’ve run into that issue with wicks not getting the capillary action but if I use Kero on the same wick and font .. no issue?
@greghall_The_TechEditor
@greghall_The_TechEditor Год назад
Liquid paraffin is thicker than Kerosene and is temperature sensitive (it thickens). It is actually liquid candle wax. The thicker the fluid, the lower the capillary action. Less fuel = less light.

What is the single arm handle for? It is on the opposite side of the double wick knobs. I bought a double wick oil lamp recently and there is a tiny nail just under the arm handle which looks like it is there to lock the handle in place. I think it might be to drop the wicks when I want to turn off the light? I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks so much
@greghall_The_TechEditor
@greghall_The_TechEditor Год назад
That arm is called the "Snuffer". Turn the wicks down to the level of the wick tubes and when you push down on the Snuffer, a cap slides up and over the wick tube, snuffing out the fire instantly.

Great video, thank you. Very good real information. Reminds me of the adage 'they don't make them like they used to'. I have Rayo' s and Aladdin's. Aladdin imo is really tanking their future with the shortage of mantles after another move in manufacturing. Rayo has a new lamp but it looks like a copy of another design.

@@JMGeranimo That is a Flat wick lamp, not a center draft. They are using the name as advertising hype. Also they said "Largest wick of any flat wick lamp on the market ". Specs states a 2-9/16" wick so it is a circular curved flat wick.

@@greghall_The_TechEditor I just looked it up. The lamp appears to be equipped with the wrong chimney. That type of burner appears to be a "Kosmos-Brenner" type which would require a pinched chimney. The bulged chimney is for "Matador" type burner that would have a flame spreader. Ant thoughts on that?

How are you trimming the wicks, flat, curved or pointed? I'm guessing these are mostly a flat style cut? In my research I finished up with a pointed wick and they seem to work well. How long do you get from a wick before it needs trimmed? I thought it would need done quite regular, but am finding that its not that often. Oh and I'm in the UK and struggling to find the Hatersley wicks you favour, at least over here!
@greghall_The_TechEditor
@greghall_The_TechEditor Год назад
Funny that you can not find English made Hattersley wicks in England?? I cut flat because that spreads out the flame. The taller the flame the more chance of smoking.

Edward Miller listed them 100 yrs ago but I know of no reproductions. Vintage is your only hope. Personally I have never seen one except in old Edward Miller catalogs. I also am not aware of any current #3 Founts. @greghall_The_TechEditor
@greghall_The_TechEditor Месяц назад
I couldn't tell you who made the glass bases, no makers mark. Most likely the lamp makers sourced the glass from an outside glass firm. I picked one style of wall hung glass base (because there are many styles) and then started collecting that style only for all my wall hung lamps for visual continuity. Same for the cast iron wall mounts too.

Cooking oil is too viscous to work well in a wick lamp. The capillary action would be too slow for much light. Liquid paraffin oil works fair but not as bright as Kerosene as long as it is not too cold or the paraffin oil will solidify into Vaseline! Plus cooking oil likes to smoke way more than Kerosene. In my opinion, a Kerosene flat wick lamp works best with Kerosene, not Diesel, Paraffin, or cooking oil.
