Can you do another video with real time protection on an hips to? I know ESET has gone downhill with it's dumb 3 levels instead of products etc but I think its good not as good but still good. Should I delete ESET sadly just renewed for year for 3 systems and its complete garbage????! But yes if you don't have real time protection enabled obviously HUGE difference but ugh please help :(
@valakivalakifalvai137
@valakivalakifalvai137 2 месяца назад
@@brandonrichuski7759 A) Testing on known ransomware with full protection on is pointless, the databases will just pick them up, there is essentially no difference between security products in terms of known malware (unless they missed it from the database or something doesn't function and they fail to block the threat), this is why he tried (and failed due to not knowing how the product works) to only test the behavioral defences, to see how would it do against unknown malware. B) It's not complete garbage, the test only turned invalid *after* he turned off real time protection, you're still better off with eset than windows defender C) Why are you asking this under my comment? I'm not Leo and he won't get notified of it, since it's under my comment and not his video. Also your comment has nothing to do with mine, so people who would answer your questions wouldn't even get to see it since they won't be looking at responses to my comment since it is not related to your response in any way.

I really love that you do this. Hopefully eset takes note of the ransomware that slipped through and fixes this. I've been using eset for over a decade on every system and have always loved how effective and resource effective it was, silently protecting me in the background without a noticeable effect in processing. I'd like to continue using it if I see that eset responds accordingly.

Been on ESET for almost 20 years now (back in the NOD32 days!) the HIPS failure was unfortunate, but its great to see that it had a near perfect blocking/catching rate on known attacks. One thing i really enjoy about ESET and why i usually suggest it is due to the UI and simple to understand messages. From my experience, your acerage PC user gets panicked really easily by malesre bytes reporting a tracker cookie, or Norton forcing rhe user to make a choice they dont understand. Thr ESET alerts are usually informative and makes sure alert the user but not make them toss the PC and laptop out the window assuming its suddenly infected with something.

Hopefully you didn't disable modules this time making your tests invalid. Marcos, an Eset representative previously stated on a PC Security Channel video 4 years ago called ESET Internet Security vs Ransomware: "By disabling real-time protection you prevent HIPS from receiving events on the file system level and thus make HIPS and all HIPS dependent components ineffective, such as: Ransomware shield, Exploit Blocker, Advanced Memory Scanner, Deep Behavior Inspection, Advanced Machine Learning, etc." 12:10 Eset clearly states in the UI: "ESET Live Grid must be enabled for Ransomware Shield to function properly." Looks like The PC Security Channel ignored this again by disabling real-time protection which does NOT equal disabling signature-based detection. That's not the way Eset works. The PC Security Channel made the same mistake again but won't admit it.

The "modernity" of a UI is the least important thing about an anti-malware program. I for one do not give a hoot if it looks modern, but lets the system get infected. I would rather have a really old, clunky 1990s UI with very solid protection if those were my options.
@djenson
@djenson 4 месяца назад
A UI is how the AV informs you that it is operation correctly and if any actions are needed, and allows you to bypass if needed. It is definitely not the "least important thing" - that could fall into parts such as slap on VPN's and so called "system cleaners" From a business view, a typical hone user will also find the UI a representation of the quality of the software, so if the UI is poor, a typical user is unlikely to purchase the software, resulting in a lack of funds to develop and maintain the AV engine.
@RageKage987
@RageKage987 3 месяца назад
@@djensonok and? It doesn't change what he said. Your argument would only work if it had no UI it's still the least important part and he was just talking about how modern it is modern doesn't mean easier to use it just means new. Your entire argument is moot and I don't get why you care about UI so much that your arguing like it's really important it's not. Lol

I moved back to ESET about 3, 4y ago after I had enough of BitDefender removing stuff from exclusions and deleting my work files, dll-s etc. as false positives and eventually felt like it was controlling me, not the other way around (even though BD detection rate is amazing and I've been using it for years). ESET is close to the top according to AV Comparatives and similar and is also very light on the system, not intrussive and if I set my rules, it's working as expected. Close to none false positives. I'm not sure whether I saw it wrongly, but if you played it in very slow motion, the alert came out before Leo put the mouse near the encryption file. I believe you should leave the Real time protection option enabled for a more reliable test anyway. Thanks!!!

Hi. Nice video. Re the ransomware portion.. I think it is a flawed test. I don't think you are meant to disable real time protection.. This is not a usual case and should only be done when actually wanting a virus or malware to execute. There are multiple threat vectors and so multiple layers of protection. HIPS alone is not meant to prevent all actions of the malware, especially if you are disabling real time file system protection, which is the main protection against running ransomware.

I wish, rather than a new pop up notification for every new virus with detailed information about the virus caught or flagged, a general pop up with, "Multiple malware alerts..." and a yellow or red blinking icon in the system tray depending on the severity. The reason is because, I've had viruses that were able to trigger unique pop ups and, while ESET caught everything and the system wasn't infected, the pop ups became the active window every time and prevented the system from being used without a hard restart or waiting forever for them to finish popping up. I like that they've added the ability to close out multiple pop ups with one click, but the pop up notification system is an overused annoyance that prevents an otherwise functional system from being used. Imagine, the malware was caught, and nothing is wrong with the system. How much does the user need that information? Should it stop their work immediately, or can that information be kept in the background for a bit while they finish what they're trying to do - or run into a problem as they tried to run a program that turned out to be a virus and now they're looking for why things didn't work - and then give them that information. The purpose of the software is to keep the device functioning, and the user happy. Most users don't know anything about the difference between a password stealer, a trojan or a bitcoin miner. They don't need the information. What they need is to know that something happened while they weren't looking, it was handled, and here's the information for you so you can learn from this for prevention later.

I know it is a test and all that, but is an anti-malware application going to face a "machine-gun" attack under normal circumstances? Perhaps a bank or something where you know there are juicy billions of dollars at stake, with a small army of hackers trying to take the system down and/or grab all the cash? And how do we know how the modules work, together or separately? In the test, you disabled one module, but perhaps it works best with another module? If you are a system admin, trying to protect billions or very important data, you would lock the system down as hard as you could. Surely, an operating system should be able to control scripts based on origin? Obviously, if you made the script you want it to run on your server or net, and not just some random script from the internet? The controls, especially with Microsoft products, do not seem that robust or granular.

@@H.Kuznetsov I was playing with one of those -em -"cut-down" windows 11 "distros" . I am sure that some are OK, but this one was not. It cut right down on the stuff that communicated with Microsoft, which was good, but then I saw connections to a few dodgy websites, so I pulled the internet cable. It was a test machine. The trouble with some anti-malware programs is that they use a lot of on-line cloud stuff to check for malware. That is fine in theory, but if the machine is already compromised, it can be a struggle for the A/V software to bring the machine back under control, because more stuff is coming down from the internet. It was no big deal, because [off-line] I rebooted from a non-writable optical disk into a change-rooted environment, and have fun analyzing all the attacks.

Hi! Every time i enjoy the quality and details of your videos. After watching a few of your videos i was inspired to create a challenge for my students to create a (restoreable) virtual environment to test malware and see the effects in "real life". I'm searching for quite a while now but it seems very difficult to find "open sources" with malware we can use to test within this sealed and virtual environment. Can you help me with some sources where i can download (very carefully of course ;-) ) some malware samples fot my students. I'm teaching vocational (IT students) within the Vista College. Would you like to help me with this? Kind Regards, Arno (IT Teacher + former IT professional)

@pcsecuritychannel - could you please make a video explaining whether or not an AV can detect/remove viruses residing in RAM (fileless), and test that prove it? Thank you! Your videos are always to the point. Looking forward to this question answered :)
