Got myself the big milwaukee tool only for $100 because I already had batteries. The biggest thing for me and why I recommend it is because the cold doesn't affect the battery. I've had it out on contact with the ice all day in 5 degree weather and it still had full charge and drilled 24" immediately with no problem. Can't recommend them enough for the batteries.

I like the Clam Plate with the Power Drive, have that with 8inch Strike Master and Milwaukee 2801 Drill with only 500 pounds of torque and it rips through 36 inches of ice like nothing, I just upgraded to the 2804 1200 pounds of torque bit haven't had a chance to use it yet, Clam Plate will prevent Sprained rist and broken fingers.

Thanks for watching and commenting! I couldn’t get it in time for this video due to shortages etc I am trying to make a video with the largest batteries from the top 3 drills. The dcd999 the 2804 the 40v Makita and the 36v Metabo. Having trouble getting the batteries and the makita setup.

Yes. The DCD999 absolutely eats the ice here in North West Montana. The DCD999 paired with a 5-8AH battery with the 8" pistol Bit is all you need. I've drilled through 24+ inches of ice with this set up.

I agree, I was a little disappointed to not see the Dewalt 20v flex in the lineup. I also wanted to know which batteries were being used with the milwaukee drills as I have both and have nothing but problems trying to drill ice. Maybe I missed it idk, but overall a really great video! I bought a pistol bit and didn't like it, so I returned it and went with a LiteFlite and have made much more progress than the pistol bit. 👍

My fishing buddy bought a 40V auger last year, I think it is an ION but not positive. I have a Milwaukee M18 drill mounted on a Clam adapter hooked up to an old Mora hand drill. I can drill holes 30% faster than he can and since I'm a contractor I have 5 or 6 batteries and can drill several hundred holes (depending on ice thickness, of course) over the course of a two or three day trip and never run out of juice. And I have two drills, just in case. One small caveat - I drill 7 inch holes and he drills 8 inchers. I pulled up a 29" walleye last January thru a 7" hole so not too worried about the size of the hole. I think the auger he has attached the drill to doesn't give enough ability to push down on the auger like the Clam adapter handles do.
@carterhope348
@carterhope348 Год назад
Honestly surprised any drill other than the matobo and Fuel made the cut that deep we used an old rigid before everyone was doing it but we were only cutting 8 inches of ice max and using a 4 inch auger since I was prone to stepping in holes the I was a kid walking around 10 inch holes. But if your going out by yourself on ice 12 inches or less for a few hours the drill is perfect assuming you have a drill I wouldn’t go buy a drill just for this my dad and now I have plenty of drills from work. If I was fishing ice that deep I’d stick with an electric auger and if you don’t have a high end drill that will absolutely tear up the drill constantly putting that much stress on a “cheap” drill

@leviwooten3795
@leviwooten3795 2 года назад
For the money required to drill these holes buy a gas powered auger... I've used handheld ones on hard ice takes forever. With that being said my buddy owns a 300-400$ gas auger and it blows holes like it's nothing. 100% the way to go run out of gas? Fill it up. Run out of battery you're screwed. Batteries aren't good In the cold either. Start the auger up before you leave the house run it as soon as you get to the ice and start it up every thirty minutes when it's severely cold but we just leave the auger in the tent with the heater keeping it warm and she starts up every time.

You did good man 👍 The fishing industry is based out of the northern USA states & a lot of these products are created for that huge market. Thinner ice, float suits ect.. One thing I would like to point out is you never cleared the hole with the Milwaukee 2804 and the Eskimo. With a chipper blade that is a must and could bind if you don't. You cleared the hole multiple times while using the Strikemaster with every drill though. If your doing comparisons it needs to be the same identical technique to get accurate results. You also said you would do the math or battery conversion for the Milwaukee to get the same power as the Metabo? I think the 24 volt Strikemaster over that heavy 40 volt would of been a better comparison video and cheaper. Decent video though.
@christopherpelkey8256
@christopherpelkey8256 2 года назад
On point brother. The 24 volt is an 18 volt. 24 Volts fresh off charger. Not a conclusive test.
@jarrodmorrison1757
@jarrodmorrison1757 2 года назад
I was thinking the same thing about clearing the holes. Most drills are going to bog down in ice that thick if you don’t clear the shavings once the flights are under the surface. It seemed like the fuel and the metabo drilled pretty much the same and bogged down right at breakthrough.
@jefflinfitt9205
@jefflinfitt9205 2 года назад
I picked up the Metabo based on torque vs cost but your video really drove the decision home. Lowes has a good price on the kit with the fast charger and two 4/8 AH Dual voltage batteries, It was the best value for this type of torque compared to the major brands. I think the comparable Dewalt sitting beside it was $25 higher for "tool only". I used it with a 8" Rapala hand auger to cut through 40" of ice on Lake Winnipeg. It was so fast and easy I'm thinking its maybe a bit overkill unless your in a speed contest or something like that. I cut three holes and it didn't even touch the battery indicator. The only thing I would change is to have a bit slower RPM on the low setting to maybe match the smoothness of the dedicated ice auger as it is a bit aggressive (could also be the cheap hand auger part). Maybe this could be done pairing with the Clam gearbox but I am not sure of the gear ratio on that and if it even affects RPM. Anyway, thanks for making the video as most others only seem to focus on Milwaukee vs Dewalt.

The 2804 I bought was $179 (US) at northern. That’s the best price I’ve seen. The hammer-drill transmission is the most heavy-duty. Anything less than 750in-lb drill will end up overheating anyway. I’ve used mine with K-Drill and Lite-flite auger. No problems. The Metabo with 36v source needs 1/2 the current and therefore less heat generated (this is critical in battery operation). I don’t know anything about the transmission in the Metabo. In the short-term, it works well. The chuck is also critical. Milwaukee is probably the best of them.

He k of a video man! I work in fishing retail and talking with customers and seeing the product in person, I thought the ion/eskimo bits were over hyped. Especially since my strivemaster 40v keeps up with the ion no problem, and I've never lost a race to a drill bit. I never realized how much better the lite flight blade was over the eskimo!!

Devin, amazing video! The best out there. My question- Are these hammer drills or not? I am going to try the Flex from Lowes 24 volt w 1400 inch lbs of torque. Hope she shreds it up with that much torque. Comes with a 5 AH and 2.5 AH batteries for 200 bucks American!

Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. These are hammer drills but they are not used in hammer mode. Hope the flex works well for you!
