I'm a new teacher, and before I watch this video I had no idea what TPR means and how to use it in the classroom. Thank you very much for your super fun and useful video.
I am an English teacher who is teaching kids English in China. I am so thankful that I can learn some teaching strategies on RU-vid. Thank you so much! :)
Nancy, you a re a phenomenal teacher! I am so glad I found you, and yea, I'm sooooo binge watching your videos! I am so nervous to apply but I know that I will LOVE this job! I can't believe I can do this from home!
Nancy, I just have to say that you are one of the sweetest, most inspirational teachers I've ever met. Your videos are always so uplifting and enjoyable and I firmly believe that it is thanks to these videos that I passed my mock class on the first try. Thank you for all that you do.
I just started teaching this week, and I just got my first parent feedback. They said I didn't use enough TPR. It's kind of hard to do because I feel silly doing it! This video came out at just the right time, thank you!
Your videos have helped me a lot with my kids. At first, when social isolation started, we recorded videos, but this week we’ve started our online classes. I’m very thankful for all your tips! They were great!
This was great, thank you Nancy! I have just started teaching in a classroom and can see when my students are bored or confused. This video made me realize I have not been using TPR at all! Great tips, I cant wait to watch the rest of your videos.
I just did my first demo class two hours ago, and I noticed that I didn't use enough TPR!!! I must say, your videos have been my go to's for preparations. I sincerely appreciate your hard work and efforts. Thank you!!!
Nancy, this series has been *the most helpful* set of videos I've watched to help me understand the key aspects of teaching for VIPKid in preparing for my demo. Thank you!
Hello Nancy! Your videos are Godsent! I am an English preschool teacher in Mexico. We start the "new normal" distance learning on the 24th and I was quite nervous of how to engage with all new students. This is perfect! I will definitely be watching all of your videos in the series to make sure I have the tools to give my students the best learning experience possible.
Good video! Three things I learned about teaching ESOL overseas: Avoid on-line TESOL courses like the plague. Many countries won't give you a visa if you have one, and many companies won't even consider you for employment if your degree was obtained on-line. Ditto for TESOL certs that are under 120 hours. (I’d go for 140 just to be safe.) Lastly, MEMORIZE Mark's English Grammar Shortcuts - saves a boat load of teaching headaches.
Hi!! I had an entire course about these methodologies at University, but I believe that I'm learning more watching these videos instead of reading those texts! Thanks!!
Halo Nancy, I'm not a native speaker, non-native parent ask me to teach English to her daughter so I thought that using TPR would be a good idea but I didn't have any idea how to begin, after watching your video now I have a glimpse of what to do , thank you very much keep up the good work .
Nancy, Thank you so much for the videos you post! I am currently in the hiring process. I have my mock 1 class tonight. Your videos have not only been the most informative and helpful, but also the most motivational. I told my husband that I want to be able to do what you do. You and I both have daughters the same age, and watching your video about Ava waking up pushes me to try to be even more successful so I can quit my public teaching job and stay home with my little girl. You rock!
Thank you, Nancy! I teach my own Native American language to 7 different groups of classes. We have half an hour a few days a week to teach. I have a good understanding of TPR. I have been given a new lesson plan of TPR and have to translate it all into my own language. These videos are so helpful for ideas! Patiently waiting for the next video :)
Before ending the video, you could ask your audience to subscribe your channel and turn on the alarm preventing rom they don't see your new video. Also, you could ask them to share when you begin your video.
Do you ever reduce your TPR based on the student's level? The last kid looked advanced, wondering if it's counter productive or if she's thinking, lady why are you treating me like a 2 to 3 year old.
This is amazing! I have been doing this a lot with my students, adjusting them and their language level.... thank you for making me feel that I am on the right path..... Great example with your own language!
So happy to hear this! I had way too much fun making up my own language! hahaha! It really does paint such a clear picture on why we use non-verbal communication to fill in any gaps on word recognition. The big take away is having the student do the actions as well. Connecting words and language to movement is gold!
Thank you so much for sharing this video. I'm currently teaching in China and looking to move into online teaching so this is incredibly useful and I love your energy!
You are awesome!!!! I saw your face in an ad and thought it was only that.. You are full of knowledge and I am glad you enjoy sharing!!!. I am so happy to find your channel in the midst of becoming a Bilingual teacher!!! Subscribed!!!
What helps for me - to mitigate the feeling of making a fool of yourself - is that before I step into the classroom (and employ this technique), I convince myself that this greatly helps students (we do this automatically when we are in a country in which another person doesn't speak English quite well). Also, you don't have to say things in a childish way; use gestures you feel comfortable with to start off. I also check understanding by asking lots of questions in L2 (I'm talking about the beginning stages). I also start in a bit of a joking way. They are allowed to find this funny, but they need to do it as well. It stands and falls with a pedagogically safe environment.
Hi Nancy, nice to meet you. I am an English teacher who just started to teach children like beginners English in China. After I saw some of the previous Chinese teachers use TPR, I was so confused and admire how professional they were. I wish I could do so; however, I have no idea what actions were for some specific words. After watching your video, I noticed how passion you are about teaching and how nice you are when you facing children. I am motivated. I will keep learning to improve myself. Thank you very much.
So happy to hear this!! Sometime when I'm not sure of what to do for a word or how to depict the meaning, I just think of how I would want someone to "show" it when the word connected is foreign or unfamiliar..... You will rock at it! Keep up the great work!! Cheering for you!
Thank you Nancy. I have taught Community adult College ESL for 19 years in California. However, the last ten years our students have decreased (cost of living in Orange County, etc). It was my time to get laid off due to a lack of students and in my community. However, in Irvine, they are a lot of young asian students needing instruction. This is where I need to go. Excellent instruction to do this.
Thank you for these videos. I am about to start my teaching course straight after finishing Uni and had no idea how effective this method is. Now I know it is a great method :)
Hello..I m also an English teacher..I have been doing research on TPR...thank you so much for this nice video...this is an amazing strategy to engage learners in learning...I just love it...
Hi. Where are you from? I really want to know more teachers. I am an English teaching assistant. If you are interested coming to teaching in China, feel free to email me, thank you.
So happy to hear this helped! I didn't know either. I had taught with whole brain teaching & carried some of those strategies over when implementing Total Physical Response in the classroom! Keep up the great work!
Awesome video we have added this to our playlist for teachers to view. We get asked all the time about what TPR is and this helps out a lot. Great job!
Hi Nancy, this is exactly what I was looking for when I commented on another video of yours! This is so awesome! I totally LOLed at your made-up language, such a fun idea. I love your teaching style, thank you for being an inspiration.
"The TPR tool is valuable not only at the beginning of language instruction, but I recommend it to introduce any new vocabulary item or new grammatical item. First comes TPR for understanding, then other skills of speaking, reading and writing follow gracefully." - James Asher.
So happy to hear this! I had learned whole brain teaching when teaching in the mainstream classroom & it carries over really well in the ESL classroom (But it has a different term TPR and is a bit different). Keep up the great work!
Hey Nancy!!! I just saw your video and I absolutely love it. You are so animated and that is fantastic!!!! Thank you so much for a fabulous way to interact with ESL students. Gosh I wish you were around back when I was sitting in my 4th grade class with no English and class full of strangers. Thanks again. 🥰🥰🥰
Nancy! Thanks for your super helpful videos!!!! I did my mock 1 class yesterday and submitted my docs, signed the contract, and was invited to teach level 1, so I think I'm almost hired and don't have to teach a second mock class! Very happy about that. I appreciate your tips :)
This video is very helpful in identifying the different types of TPR and when to use each type. Many of my beginner students also copy the TPR for repeat and say. However, I would rather them repeat all the TPR than none of it. Many of my students I have to be persistent with because they do not repeat ANY TPR. I am not sure if they do not understand I want them to repeat or if they are shy because it is a new environment. Thank you for the advice.
@Nancy Taylor: Thank you for making and being willing to share this video with new ESL teachers or potential new ESL teachers. I look forward to seeing more!
You got it! I have an entire playlist here on RU-vid that is linked below! I also have a 4 hour training for ESL teachers that is the complete package at www.heynancytaylor.com/teslo
Oh, thank you! I have my Mock 1 tomorrow night, and I think you just helped TPR really click for me. As a matter of fact, I think I have watched every video. Wish I had your referral code before I applied....Thank you!
To be honest. i do really like how you explain what the TPR is.. and i understand how to use TPR.. I'm a student at my college, and my lecturer told me to give some examples about TPR in front of class and my friends will seen how the TPR works.. Thank You so much
Hello Nancy , I enjoyed your video as a preschool teacher I use TPS in my circle time songs, and when identifying animals with my students. The parents come in and ask me to show them how to do it, so they can sing- along with their son/daughter at home using the hand movements. And for your question on watching your video non-stop it is called Binge watching and if you are telling some one that you stayed up and watched an entire series of something, then you say to them, that I binged watched Grey's Anatomy last night.
Nancy, thank you for teaching us TPR. Your teaching is very clear and useful. You online demo also inspires me. Using TPR teaching online seems effective as well. Could you share more? Thank you again! I am looking forward to learning from all of your videos. Chen
I will have my demo tomorrow and really have no idea what are the things i need to do and this video is a great help. Thanks a lot! I hope I can ace it. lol!
I was able to get the job! You don't know how much your videos helps me. Thank you so much! Now I can earn and take care of my kids without having a problem.
