The application of this machine was to be able to easily test new features and demonstrate the license plate recognition software that is on the cameras that are installed on the highways and street corners.

Offer to make one like a flip clock or old Nickelodeon animation viewer. 😁

Yes, of course it was for "testing". As in "using it successfully" in a "proof of concept installation" in your car in "real world conditions" after a bank robbery ;)

Nice setup! Are you using the trapezoidal planner that's built into ODrive, or are you sending it trapezoidal paths externally?

Just curious, why did you need two motors instead of one? At first glance, it would seem one would be powerful enough to drive the whole system (and you wouldn't've had to spend time syncing anything).
@ProtoG42
@ProtoG42 4 года назад
Mainly for more responsive speed control and it is much more aesthetically pleasing with those two motors in my opinion. It's in a show room and the customer really liked the way it looked like this. The motor I chose would have handled it but it would not have been able to move nearly as fast as it can now. It was a nice challenge getting them synced like and I learned quite a bit which is always nice. I also could have taken the easy way out and just used a stepper motor but I really wanted to used a direct drive brushless motor. It also has current control so if you stick your hand in it, it will automatically stop.

@@eduardoanonimo3031 it's for a show room, they wanted quality not cheap. It's not something that will br sold. You can always do something better the second time.

@@eduardoanonimo3031 Good thing you're not the customer. They like the brushed metal look. The customer gets what the customer wants.
@ProtoG42
@ProtoG42 4 года назад
@@eduardoanonimo3031 there are several ways to do this and I even mentioned in the video that it would have been easier to use a stepper motor. Stepper motors are loud, ugly and do not perform well at high speeds. What you're not understanding is that the customer wanted it to look a certain way which is what I did. Aesthetically, what I made is much more attractive and quieter than if I had used a stepper motor.
@RobertSzasz

@@eduardoanonimo3031 fast, quiet, and good looking would rule out a stepper motor. Gimbal BLDCs are great for public facing projects.

I don't know how the mechanics would work, but it would be cool to just stick a stack of license plates in a hopper and have them display one at a time. (Some sort of mounting point/spacer would probably be needed in the license plate fixture holes)

Why not just use a Ball bearing on one side instead of two motors? genuinely curious.

ESP32. Think Arduino lite. Uses the same API.
@ProtoG42
@ProtoG42 4 года назад
@@cheif10thumbs I wouldn't exactly call an ESP32 an Arduino lite. An ESP32 has two processing cores to run code on, WiFi, Bluetooth as well as many other advantages over your generic Arduino board.

@@ProtoG42 I was trying to keep my comment brief and possibly over simplified since the question was already answered in the thumbnail. Been fiddling with this stuff for about 30 years and i don't like to scare new people off with an overly pedantic and detailed answer.
@nikolasengelhard6386
@nikolasengelhard6386 4 года назад
What exactly were you testing? It' of course an eye catcher for a show room, but in reality, you don't have rotating plates and real world problems (I assume) are rather dirty plates, low light, maybe occlusions. I guess you can scan cars while the are supersonic, but is this a standard requirement? And is this more a show case for the camera you use or for the detection software?
@ProtoG42
@ProtoG42 4 года назад
A customer asked for this, so I made it. I'm not testing anything. I did see their software working on a monitor picking up the different plates as they move into view. It's just a selling tool that can also be used for testing the software.
