Esta sesión ofrece una visión general del denominado español como lengua de herencia, abordándolo como objeto de estudio, enfoque pedagógico y experiencia de vida para muchos jóvenes que ven cómo sus realidades lingüísticas y culturales suelen ser cuestionadas dentro y fuera del aula de idiomas. Con frecuencia, estas experiencias les generan sentimientos de inseguridad lingüística (y por lo tanto identitaria), lo que a su vez puede provocar emociones de ansiedad, desinterés y rechazo. A fin de proporcionar una base teórica sólida y un marco de referencia común que nos sirvan de apoyo para impulsar una enseñanza más responsable y comprometida, se intenta dar respuesta a preguntas como: ¿qué es una lengua de herencia?, ¿cuáles son las características lingüísticas de sus hablantes?, ¿y sus motivaciones, intereses y expectativas?, ¿qué factores emocionales y socioafectivos intervienen en sus dinámicas lingüísticas?, ¿qué, por qué y cómo influyen las distintas circunstancias (sociales, históricas, políticas) y experiencias (educativas, raciales, etc.) en el desarrollo de su identidad lingüística y cultural y en su rendimiento académico general? En la parte final se invita a la reflexión y la autocrítica para repensar y evaluar nuestras propias prácticas docentes.

Diego Pascual y Cabo es profesor de lingüística y español en University of Florida, donde también dirige el programa de español como lengua de herencia. Su investigación actual gira en torno a tres áreas: adquisición, aprendizaje y enseñanza del español como lengua de herencia; actitudes e ideologías (racio)lingüísticas; y la relación entre lengua, poder e identidad. Sus publicaciones han aparecido en numerosos medios científicos de referencia internacional, como Studies in Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, Heritage Language Journal y Foreign Language Annals. En 2014 fundó el simposio anual del español como lengua de herencia y desde 2018 es editor de la revista académica internacional Spanish Heritage Language Journal.

This presentation will offer an overview of Spanish as a heritage language, addressing it as an object of study, as a pedagogical approach, and as a life experience for many young people who see how their linguistic and cultural realities are often questioned inside and outside the language classroom. Frequently, these types of experiences generate feelings of linguistic insecurity (and therefore identity), which in turn can provoke emotions of anxiety, disinterest, and rejection. With the aim of providing a solid theoretical base and a common frame of reference that will support us in promoting more responsible and committed teaching, we will try to answer questions such as: what is a heritage language? What are these speakers' linguistic characteristics? And their motivations, interests, and expectations? What emotional and socio-affective factors intervene in their linguistic dynamics? What, why, and how different circumstances (social, historical, political) and experiences (educational, racial, etc.) influence both the development of their linguistic and cultural identity and their general academic performance? In the final section of the talk, reflection and self-criticism will be encouraged to rethink and evaluate our own teaching practices.

Diego Pascual y Cabo is a professor of Linguistics and Spanish at the University of Florida, where he also directs the Spanish as a Heritage Language program. His current research revolves around the study of three areas: the acquisition, learning and teaching of Spanish as a heritage language; (racio)linguistic attitudes and ideologies; and the relationship between language, power, and identity. His publications have appeared in numerous scientific media of international reference, highlighting Studies in Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, Heritage Language Journal and Foreign Language Annals. In 2014, he founded the annual symposium of Spanish as a heritage language, and since 2018 he is the editor of the international academic journal Spanish Heritage Language Journal.
