handled me Framus whch ist always in reach but yesterday squawked my left thumb and so gave up ;) Wie sollte man sowas auch musikalisch breichern? Noc chances anyway and not in my f. livetime!
A true artist. Mad skills. Makes it look effortless. Bass players, you know how difficult this is to do! Singing those melodies against those bass lines. Mind blowing.
I'm a bass player used to sing backing vocals on son, salsa, mambo and other latin styles. At first I thought it was impossible, but today it feels so natural that I don't even think about it. It just needs practice (a lot of) and experience.
I have tried playing guitar and singing at the same time. I have tried playing drums and singing at the same time. But the hardest is still playing BASS & SINGING at the same time. Somebody here commented that it is exceptionally difficult and I have to to say that is an understatement. Gotta thumbs up this lady here. She sings so beautifully and plays bass so well. A fretless on top of that. True talent here.
BuburAyam yes I know! I used to play bass and I always admired bass singer player !!! You likely need to start both together and "forget" one when play the other ... To some extend , went to see LEVEL 42 , bass singer once, he was very good , they are some rhythm where is easier to handle the job but still tough .. ..
Kassius KLAY and people cannot really appreciate the degree of difficulty until they have actually learned how to do both at the same time. I find bass guitar to be unique this way.
as a bass player there is a secret to it. i discovered it years ago watching sting. guitar players use a strumming motion, whether actually strumming or not it's hand position which keeps time. if you are a finger bass player you are not keeping time with your right hand so there are no reference points to sing off of. the secret is to hold your right hand like you are playing fingerstyle guitar or a pick. much easier to sing
True it is very hard, I play bass and have for 35 years It isn't an easy task to sing and play it well. Very few professional musicians can do it and do it well. She is one of them along with Sting, and Geddy Lee of Rush.
All I can say is she is gifted. Playing such complex baselines, time signatures, and also sing complex melodies and lyrics is just pure musical genius!
As a bass player, I have a 100% commitment to get the bass line as perfect as it can be. But I have totally renounced to sing at the same time as keeping the groove, because I will not do either correctly. It takes a real musician and talent to do it, and I will never make it happen. Ms. Spalding is a phenomenon.
My God....this sister is gifted. When I was a teenager growing up in the seventies and eighties we had artist like Bobbi Humphrey, Jean Carn, Weather Report, Flora Purim, Alphonso Johnson, Phyllis Hyman, Billy Cobham, George Duke, McCoy Tyner, etc...I mean we had so much good music to listen to and I thought that the days of really good music were gone. I am so glad that I was wrong.
That unfortunately doesn't happen with jazz artists. Jazz may have its renaissance moment as of late, but as long as jazz doesn't top any charts, there won't be huge promotions for folks like Esperanza. Luckily, she hasn't been hurting for hits like that because she is not that kind of artist.
She is nothing, if not truly amazing! Singing w/complicated riffs and time signature changes may be the hardest thing to do in music. She's incredible!!! Thank you, from an old time "rock & roller".
What I find amazing is that she can hear the melody line and sing it in perfect tune given only a bass line. Also amazing is the ease with which she switches between electric bass and stringed bass. I love Esperanza!
The universe cares not for "deserving" or "not deserving". Plus i dont think the musician even cares for accolades as much as the fans do for the musician.
people who do this can switch pilots because the technique is powered by love. a lot of musicians lose this blend of technique and love and give in to that common oh so common fear of feeling not good enough.
Good Question! I've found it more productive to generally put the fingers on auto, more so than vocals. the voice loses too much soul. but often you can blend both together so that neither is completely on auto, especially if you have solid beat to play with and are halfway improvising. improvising on vocals and bass the way she is isn't possible without really, really solid bandmates! kudos to everyone on stage!
Problably the bass was in auto mode while she sing. In fact, the bass line is not too dificult. It's not easy but not too hard. When she stop sing, then she split some more notes in the bass. Sorry for my english.
I have all of her albums...Esperanza is the best album IMHO... it rocks from the first to the last note and her vocals are AMAZING, this woman will not be bound by genre and I love it!
A supremely gifted musician. Her playing is a rhythmic blend of r&b/soul/blues/funk coupled with Jazz improvisation. Her singing, has a strong, beautiful, easy on the ears vocal delivery that at times, veers into free interpretation. Fantastic. Beautiful? Her presence is captivating. A natural beauty, yet it's the brilliance of the music that draws you in.
She is next-level gifted with musical abilities, amazing feel for the bass. Singing seamlessly over complicated bass lines! I would like to see her write a few crossover songs with popular hooks - she deserves to be a part of the broader musical zeitgeist.
She's a natural, a genius and a hard worker. Best recipe for a exceptional musician. If you take time to listen many of her stuff and learn about her, have some knowledge in music and know how hard it is to reach that level, specialy at that young age, you have no choice to recognize her amazing talent.
She makes it all look effortless, and it definitely is extremely difficult to pull of what she's doing. She makes me look like I never picked up the instrument. I am just totally blown away. Fantastic!!!!
I know I'm in love with an artist when I literally can't play their songs loud enough, these songs are just so positive and make me feel like I can take on the world. Stress is gone when I'm grooving to this beautiful jazz goddess xo
Esperanza is amazing. Beauty and pure real talent in one single person. Not everyday we find such special persons. And to make it even better, she is able to speak Portuguese...and she loves Brazilian music.
Not to take anything away from Esperanza's technical and compositional sophistication, but her music is also very emotive and engaging. It can't serve as background music for me...I get involved in it whether I intend to or not. I run across lots of comments for various artists saying that no one makes music like they used to. To them I say, "Listen to Esperanza!" Incomparable!
Your sort of sexually biased comment is best for pornhub or that sort of 'social' platform. You disrespect the art-form by objectifying the female involved. What if you merely listened to this performance without the visual? This would create a more appropriate realistic reaction from anyone who tends to primitively merely "listen with their eyes". Please do be informed that you are inappropriate to sophisticated people who intuitively understand what everyone else already knows (what I am saying) without having to be so directly instructed.
@@riowallacemusic1150 bruh, he was talking about the song, and even if he was talking about her, he was just saying that he finds women who play an instrument attractive, if he’s even straight in the first place. So yeah, if he was even talking about her, he was talking about her skill, not her looks
Terrific woman in jazz&groove music , yes ..and very beautiful .. ! But best female bass player and best jazz singer in the world ?!! I guess you don't know very much about jazz maybe . To my knowledge I don't know a better female acoustic bass player ok . But there's a thousand great jazz singers !! .and ..have you listened to that girl teenager called Tall Wilkenfield ..on electric bass ?
frederic orsi Tal Wilkenfield RULES! Esperanza Spaulding is a better singer to my knowledge, however,Tal on an electric is SUPERIOR!.......Both are awesome!
We're experiencing 2 people having 1 experience... her voice is its own and her bass skillz are another entity. This is unity at its finest... marriage of within. Wow
Being a bass player and having an uncle who was very verse in jazz I grew up hearing the name of miss Spalding..but iv never had the privilege to enjoy her talents as much as here recently..she became the author of sounds that have become my anthems for certain life aspects.. poetry, sounds, and amazing talents make her music one of a kind
I love Esperanza! She is quintessential musical talent. Excellent grooves, perfect voice, dynamic control, great compositions and of course stunning good looks! What more could you ask for?
When you can play the upright bass and sing at the same time, you're a great musician. Playing a fretless bass guitar makes you more special, too. She's the best.
+Ambrosia Cunningham said: "She's beautiful and talented. What more can you ask for?!"A bit of dentistry? She appears to be missing a tooth on the left side.
john dow Her teeth have nothing to do with her performance as an artist. If she doesn't want to get her teeth fixed then she doesn't have to. Stop being rude. I'm sure there's something about your appearance that can use fixing as well.
She makes me feel like I'm in such a consistent mood at a live music concert no matter what. Rain, snow, clear skies, typhoon, hurricane, earthquake, volcanic happenings prolly...its the same mood experienced no matter what.
Wow ..... she is very talented and it's amazing that she can play so well while singiing which is a skill I'm still working on. Glad to see her along with Tal and Rhonda becoming an inspiration for young girls to pick up the bass and play !!!
I came here after realizing that the album cover had her, the no doubt singer, with a bass on her shoulder--- And I was listening, and started freaking out at the immense amount split focus someone would need to play that and sing that flawlessly. Honestly, just like,,, I thought the voice did it, but that skill is something else knee wobbling
i don't know music vernacular but the bends in her voice at a LIVE show oh my gosh! i can't imagine how much practice and confidence it would take to perform like that on stage. incredible
I play by ear 🎹 someone tell Ms Spaulding I need her to play for me a little to get these musical themes out of my head... I love this music!!✌️💗💗💗😄... HAIL MS. SPAULDING!!!!😊✌️💗💗💗💗
Did you stick around to see her slaying the upright bass too? And singing simultaneously. Mind blown. I'm a fan of Jaco, Stanley, Marcus, et al but this woman is in a category of her own.
