Esperanza Spalding: Live at BRIC | NPR MUSIC FRONT ROW

Fulfilling the performance-art vision of her spirit-muse Emily, Esperanza Spalding played the music of her forthcoming album Emily's D+Evolution in concert at BRIC House in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Thursday, March 3. WFUV and NPR Music presented a live video webstream of the performance as part of the First Listen Live series.
Emily's D+Evolution marks a new sound for Spalding. Here, she picks up the electric bass (and occasionally the piano) and surrounds herself with a power trio of electric guitar and drums - a louder, proggier, weirder funk-rock direction for the jazz-trained bassist and vocalist. It's part of a broad theatrical vision for the character Emily, inspired by broad philosophical musings on resourcefulness and the nature of progress. On stage, she was surrounded by choreographed routines, a marionette closet and three backup singers dressed all in yellow.
"Whether you want to see it as devolution and evolution, and the place where they co-exist without one diminishing the other, or you could look at it like barely having the tools that you need, but having to move forward, and having to keep moving," Spalding told NPR. "What do you do when you don't really have all the tools that you need, but you have to survive? And you need to grow and expand?"

Playing a 5 string fretless with perfect intonation, perfect time with the percussion, singing complicated verses , moving around ... how is that even possible?? Amazing!

I agree that technically this is all well executed. If I might ask, fundamentally, did you enjoy the music / songs? I am just curious. It seems like well-executed and an ambitious, artsy performance of musical theatre, but I am not sure I found the songs enjoyable. I am just wondering if others feel that way.

@@gleventhal I understand you, this album (just like the the rest of her albums) requires several listenings to begin to grasp the full concept of her music and lyrics, but once you got It, its really amazing, it really is.

@@israco89 I've enjoyed a lot of her more straight-forward jazz and brazilian/latin-jazz work, this is a different bag though. I feel like this is similar to Frank Zappa's work which I enjoy more because of Frank's dry comic personality coming though, where I find her to be more playful and seemingly-intentionally artsy here, which I find less appealing and a bit more (and it's a harsher word than I'd like) pretentious. She's a better musician than Zappa though, in my opinion (which I'd be surprised if it were a controversial one)

@irasalac9024
@irasalac9024 5 лет назад
@@nowkentapplegate5315 you mean it's not hard for HER. Any musician will tell you what she does is unique to her other-worldly ability to completely "divide her brain and ears". There are other bass players that sing well, but usually the bass line is simplified to allow them to focus on the vocal melody.

Catch her live when she comes to a city near you. The show is very theatrical, almost like interpretive street art, but far more energetic and exciting in the live setting. The compressed audio just doesn't capture what you hear live in this show. I just saw them live tonight, and the sound is much bigger and more dynamic than what you hear here. While her voice (incredible range) continues to mesmerize me, her bass playing was what really captured my attention tonight, especially during the couple spots where guitarist Matthew Stevens takes extended solos. While she does hold down the bottom end nicely, she pretty much solos, more like playing counterpoint against his lines; fast, fluid lines that will inevitably invite Jaco comparisons. I hope she wins at least one more Grammy for this project.

" Funk the Fear " is just straight up coming out of the Zappa tradition ( btw - try playing that bass line AND singing THAT melody ! ) . And " Elevate or Operate " is compositional gold. When people don't understand something , they tend to dislike it vehemently - maybe not understanding it , if ever , until years later ( i.e. Stravinsky's " Rite of Spring " ). But like it or not - this is a brave step for an artist clearly not wanting to rest on the safety net of past accolades. This is a gem, methinks.

Clear away some of the clutter and maybe find some really far ahead thinking stuff that may influence future styles. Listen to her outro on "Operate Elevate" for instance... And lyrically, Noble Nobles is not very accessible but musically, very interesting, I think. Just an opinion.

She led by example and did exactly that, did what she wanted and composed music that is just SICK and made a performance that makes it hard for some people stuck in the traditional pop culture to appreciate. Interesting, intellectually challenging lyrics, fantastic production and very innovative thinking when it comes to performance. However I do see where some negativity is coming from. I enjoyed this performance! Don't care about awards etc. I do believe they are indicative of talent or that something goes well but what I really focus on is the way my ears (and eyes in this case!) receive the performance in general. "What do you do when you don't really have all the tools that you need, but you have to survive? And you need to grow and expand?" - Sounds like living. Our artists measure and observe and reflect our lives back to us so we can see anew.

Great creativity! I wish it came to Chicago, I would be first in line to get tickets. The spirit and home of Sun-Ra appreciate real talent reaching out for new sounds and expression to expand the beauty of the Artist imagination.

I take back the "Hipster jazz" comment. I can't get these song's out of my head, especially: Lava, Ivy, One & Unconditional love. These song's are incredible, it just took me a few listens. I went back & researched Spalding. The Emily stuff is my favorite, but i absolutely love the trio clips with Geri Allen and the amazing drummer, who's name escapes me. The talent is off the charts.
