@jeannonin My comment probably wasn't clear. I'm GLAD she won! She's exceptional! I've seen her in concert and met her. Artists like Esperenza should be winning more often, and it should be the 'norm' but the fact that it made such news and was so 'unusual' tells me that the Grammy's isn't based on what it should be based on which is artistic ability, talent, innovation and all the things Esperenza embodies as a musician/artist. It's simply based on popularity and that doesn't = talent.
@HuggumsMcgehee Yes, exactly. It sounds like many people think a doublebass sounds. But it's only the fact if the strings are old or the instrument is bad. A good doublebass should sing and have a sustain, like fretless bassguitar but with more bottom and "body", so you can better hear the harmonical function of the bass notes.
@MrStrangeSensation: I could not agree more with you. It is incredible as some persons are able to showcase ignorance, lack of art sense and musical criterion and common sense, all at the same time, as is common in you tube jazz videos. Just an invasion of largemouth and straw talkers!.
@LawdMyEyes You kiddy didn't read exactly. I didn't write anything about her musical work, which is absolutely great, but about her instrument. Use your brain reading another one's comment. I heard ES in Berlin playing that bass and the sound was terrible.(particulary cause of the unable sound-engineer) She deserves a better instrument cause she is a great musician.Get it now?
@RightoJoe What a stupid answer. You may not be able to imagine that she could sound even better with better equipment - but I do, because it's my profession. And -as said in another answer- extra for you : I didn't say anything against her musical work. The opposite: she deserves better equipment ! Get it now ?
@Zeshly What's really your problem ? If you would have read the complete dialog your reaction would be another. Maybe you should change your therapist ? Or stop drinking ? Or your partner hasn't been nice to you ? Whatever - don't be sorry, I'm sure you'll solve your problem ! :)
The fact that her winning the Grammy for Best New artists tells me that the Academy for Music needs to rethink how they award grammys to musicians. It certainly ain't based on what it is supposed to be based on which is musical ability, talent, innovation etc.. Now it's based on popularity and record sells. A person can be 'popular' but not necessarily a true musician. The grammys need to go back to the drawing board and rethink how they view musicians.
