Are you a GIS manager who wants and/or needs to understand ESRI versioning? This is one of the most common topics we are asked about in the consulting field and a good one to unpack here in layman’s terms. We created this whiteboard video (and our free Versioning eBook) to help you understand versioning as well as provide you some useful version management tips and tools.
There are many articles out there that define what versioning is but we’re going to attempt to get behind the scenes to look at how versioning works.
In ESRI’s simple definition, versioning "is the mechanism that enables concurrent multiuser geodatabase editing in ArcSDE geodatabases." This is a good place to start. Versioning is one of the true benefits of enterprise GIS because it allows multiple users to be editing the same geographic area and even the same database record at the same point in time. Each user edits the data within their own version in the geodatabase and then ArcSDE provides the tools to merge those edits into the master public version.
Enjoy!

Presentation is outstanding also I can appreciate the whiteboard method its clean efficient and since I'm old school its familiar as I use it all the time. I am probably the only one in my organization that still works out methods or explains possible solutions via database designs on whiteboards .

I /we have implemented SDE solutions over many years and I have gone through this breakdown with different audiences over time its always the fundamentals. New kids come in have no clue of these back-end pieces just the front end of GIS for the most part. They are appreciative when they gain this knowledge clearly I really like this breakdown and will pass it on its awesome and the presenter is outstanding.

Nicely done video! Very good presentation skills and videography. Helps fill in the gaps that ESRI documentation doesn't quite fill. Thanks!

Thank you. Question here. After the compress has been successful, does it clear the contents of the A and D delta tables?

Hi Isaac! The compress operation is actually responsible for deleting expired records from the A&D tables once it identifies obsolete states in the state lineage. Check out this post for a more detailed explanation of what the compress does with some real world examples: sspinnovations.com/blog/versioning-dummies-part-3-reconcile-post-and-compress-oh-my/
