I went from a 5800X to a 7800X3D and the smoothness in games is really incredible. I have a 4090 and game at 4K ultra 120fps. I know it’s still only 8 cores but I literally only game. I got the cpu and x670e Crosshair Hero bundled at Micro. Expensive but very satisfying, also got a Win11 key from your link 🎉

The "Intel Management Engine" portion of the motherboard firmware is often overlooked. The manufacturer may or may not provide the IME firmware security update along with their bios firmware update. However, the IME security update can also optionally be updated by the end user. These IME updates are posted on certain web sites, which if the link were posted here would likely result in deletion of this comment. The "CPU Microcode" update would be a separate security update, which can be included either as a bios firmware update or as a Windows operating system security update.

Intel ME has always been a backdoor for access of exploits and services. No one really talks about this and how vulnerable PCH microcode is embedded and harmful on every system regardless of platform (AMD/INTEL/APPLE). Heck, it's really difficult to remove that there are machines that are sold without intel ME but super pricey! Most run on coreboot/seabios. I couldn't help but laugh at the "techs/professionals" or "gamers" who were freaking out about Gigabyte's marketing/security exploit and made such statements as "I will never support Gigabyte or X company again!". There's no sure way to secure or keep a system secure anymore even patches or updates are released. I am not saying people not to update their systems. What I am saying is that even after doing everything possible, there's always something that will be exploited regardless of platform, cpu or software.

Good point. ASUS have only just started including ME updates in the BIOS images, so it is updated when you flash your BIOS. Before then, you had to update it through a Windows patch, which was a problem for us Devs using Linux

What we need is an easy way to open the BIOS and perform updates from within Windows. Savvy PC users know how to update a BIOS and are comfortable doing it (as comfortable as it ever gets). But many PC users are totally unnerved at the prospect of getting under the hood of their computers, especially when that requires interfering with their computers' normal startup.

Yes the Motherboards are supported with new BIOS for long time. Even my Dell XPS laptop from 2011 gets somewhen an Bios update through Dell Support software. Other that that the main Motherboards of DIY PC towers should get long enough support even after 10 years. I have 2 towers and on both sport an B450 board. One from Asus and one from MSi. Bot get regularly supports basically new Bios several times a year.

I updated so many bios without problems in the past, but this weekend when I updated for my borther, his Asus B550 Gaming Plus from BIOS 2904 (I think) to 3205, it just killed the nvme SSD (ADATA XPG Spectrix S40G 256GB) in the first M.2 socket. (BIOS Flashback) I dont understand how is it possible, but just the ssd crashed... its not reconizable. There was a second 2TB Nvme SSD in the lower port. Thats working without promlems. On the otherhand the new bios working well. I tried the Adata SSD in another board, but its the same problem. When its plugged in, the board booting up so slowly into the bios and it cant see any SSD. I tried so many options....compatibility mode, UEFI, Legacy, Security boot device ON/OFF.... nothing helped. I just wrote down my new experiences. So be (more) careful.

One of my pet peeves with these security exploits as of late, is this aggravating tendency to just gimp performances as hard as possible on all but whatever the current generation of product being sold at the time is. It seems like only stuff on store shelves ever get any consideration to be lean and effective. As much as I normally hate DRM on principle, these "security firms" either need to take notes from the likes of VALVe and how steam is so efficient as a storefront and DRM for their digital library, or it screams shenanigans of intel/amd/et al paying these firms to make a patch that forces people to drop five digits on an upgrade prematurely.

If Intel FIXED problem on the 12th Gen does that mean they knew about the problem then and didn't say anything?
@pilotbro39

This is also when they went to the hybrid chips so it’s quite possible that the change in architecture is what fixed it without them even knowing.

I never quite got the "unless you have problems with your PC, you shouldn't update your BIOS"-approach. I mean... you do update your OS, drivers, apps, games, whatever, too right? So why not the BIOS? Gotta be a reason why all those board manufacturers keep cranking out BIOS-updates for their products. Yes: It still feels a bit weird to me going through the process - almost like I'm doing something forbidden, lol ... but in over 25 years of working with PCs, I've never managed to brick a mainboard. And these days with more modern BIOS' and all sorts of update-/flash-apps, the process is so much more convenient and fool-proof. I do wonder however what I should do about my laptop - which has a 7th gen Intel CPU and thus should be affected by the vulnerability. Problem is that I don't know a whole lot about laptops and their "inner workings" and mine does not have a way of entering the BIOS. At least no way that I could find through research on the web or that the manufacturer (Lenovo) are communicating.
@TechDeals
@TechDeals 7 месяцев назад
Indeed, BIOS updates should come right along with Windows updates these days. Regarding your 7th Gen laptop, it has passed the 5 year mark and is no longer supported. Time to replace it for security reasons.

Seems to be some leaps in logic here. You're not explaining how an old chip can lead to a user being compromised if they simply 'go online'. I understand why sharing computers makes it a risk, but not why a standalone single user machine is at risk.

Your confusion is understandable, you're not alone there. However, consider that your lack of understanding of why it is a risk does not mean it isn't one.
