What a handsome man! The most important is the confidence and humbleness of modeling the attire. I really appreciate that 2-colored suit. It's gorgeous. What makes it so handsome is the length of the jacket. I appreciate very much this type of man. Please, Gentleman, continue on this journey of bringing back the real man.
I'm fascinated with all this ironing equipment. My family and friends thought I was silly buying an expensive Rowenta iron. Can't wait to hear what they'll say if I get one of those vacuum boards too.
I'm watching your vids out of order. This was the 2nd one I've watched. Great job! You've just about convinced me to go for a vacuum ironing board. Almost there!
This is a very helpful if not expensive video but did answer so many questions I had on ironing. I hate the job but always wondered how dry cleaners made a good job on my clothes. It’s skill and tools
First of all I want to highly commend you for sharing an abundance of helpful information on how to prepare to iron/press your own clothing watching your video the other day somewhat took me back to my boyhood and watching my grandmother iron clothes she unfortunately did not have the luxury of steam ironing in fact I recall her using one of those irons that look like a solid piece of steel that you heat up and use with extreme care to avoid burning your article of clothing as I got a bit older she passed onto me some valuable tips on how to properly iron clothes some of the things you even mention in this first part series of videos on ironing personally I enjoy ironing my own clothes because for me I find it to be somewhat therapeutic again thanks and look forward to the next video on ironing.
Raphael has tough me more than my parents..you are my virtual father..now you even teach us how to iron..i`m about to move on my own know and this definitely helped a lot
Very good video, and something I have struggled with, although I recognize the value and necessity of ironing. On the other hand, I would rather have my gentleman's gentleman do this for me, if only I had one.
Hi GG... Off topic but here goes. I spent my after school time and Saturday's working for a high end tailor in downtown Montreal (Russel's Fine Mens Wear) on Rue Sherbrooke. Real tailors, nothing off the rack all shirts and suits were hand made, made to measure. They catered to exclusive, high end type customers. I very much enjoy your show, I believe much of what you discuss has been lost through the generations. I do have an observation, more of a personal preference. In you're video, when you show your trousers, I feel they are too short. In the front I prefer to see a slight 'break' in the pant crease near the shoe while the back crease is at the heel (or ever so slightly below). Can you comment on setting pant length. Cheers!
Excellent advice! If I can add one point (as someone who takes great pleasure in ironing my own 100% cotton dress shirts). When choosing a steam iron be sure to buy one that has a steam rating of 1500 Watts or higher. If the steam iron does not advertise the rating it probably does not have enough steam power to iron all-cotton dress shirts. They require plenty of steam to really flatten wrinkles well. I was not aware of the vacuum boards. I'm going to look for one! Thanks!
+Don Peterson It can certainly be an indicator but wattage just tells you how much something consumes. Just because a car uses a lot of gas doesn't tell you if it has a lot of horse power ;)
I stand corrected! Your response prompted me to do a bit more research. The wattage rating is an indicator of how fast a steam iron heats up and how hot it gets. The hotter the steam iron gets the better it is at producing the steam needed to melt wrinkles. There is no rating that indicates directly how much steam an iron produces. There is a general correlation between the price of a steam iron and its ability to produce adequate amounts of steam (with a few value-priced exceptions). As always, I enjoy your videos and the careful research you put into them. Thanks!
Nice video, I spent $90 on a good iron and $65 on a decent board, I thought I was close to good. Watching this video I see I gotta buy like 10 other things. I don't even think I own $500 worth of clothes any more. I wonder if buying a $499 vacuum board would be overkill? lol. Until this video I had no idea they existed, now I feel I need one.
1:38 Denim! I never expected that. No criticism, just surprised me. I love your work and channel. I'm grateful for everything I've learned from you. Best wishes. However.......whilst you do hold mentor/ sage status, should this go any further (hoodies, track suits etc) thumbs down are not "off the table" lol!
The manual on my Rowenta iron says to never use 100% distilled water because it can cause the iron to spit and leak. Does this apply to all irons? Or just Rowenta brand? 5:41
Could you please include a link of where to buy your sleeve board in the info section below the video? I can’t find it online and your link in the video to it is not working on my iPad, thank you in advance
Is there an optimal shape of tailor's pressing ham for menswear? I'm going to go with a wool of some sort on one side cotton on the other. Mainly for suits, sports jackets.
+MrDosonhai there is no such thing as a non-iron shirt. Most so called non-stop iron shirts are treated with formaldehyde. The fabric feels weird and the stuff that helps to prevent wrinkles comes off after you wash it for 8-10 times. Erin has a proprietary formula that makes it easier and quicker to iron but the shirts cost close to $300 off the rack...
Great video with lots of good info. However, I've heard that steaming your suits can result in seams coming undone and other deformations happening - is this something to worry about or is it just a myth?
Thyworm I would try to flush out the iron with a mixture of distilled water and a very mild acid which doesnt have a scent. Of course after that you should flush out your iron again but this time only with distilled water to prevent the acid from harming your garment. Please excuse my english im a non- native speaker.
+Thyworm use distilled water and a splash of clear, colorless l, filtered vinegar. Put the iron on the hottest setting and full steam. Wait until it is hot. Now use the steam button
Thank you for the useful advice and techniques for iron men's clothing! Very helpful! (Yet your ensemble in this video is distracting. The bottom button of the double-breasted suit jacket should not be button; buttoning both buttons looks a bit like a sausage casing. If you are wearing a real or fabric flower buttonhole, the pocket square is excessive--buttonhole or pocket square, not both. The patterned trousers are attractive but the cuff looks oversized. The matching cufflinks and ring look as if you are trying too hard. I love bow ties but this tie with pointed ends is visually disconcerting with the flat loop above one of the pointed ends.)
I’m not trying to be rude ,but, I’ve noticed that in some of your videos you mention Donegal Tweed, it’s actually pronounced “Dun-ee-gol” tweed. It’s not a problem I just thought I would let you know
Hi Raphael, Do you have any advice on the size of clapper to buy? I have seen ones varying in size from 8 to 11 inches, even with the same brand. Are there benefits to longer ones?
Interesting video and great ideas. However, I suggest that you get more practice in ironing a shirt. You appear to iron around the potential wrinkles instead of flattening the shirt front out to iron the pockets.
I really like your videos, very great quality. The only downside for me is that you have your lights to bright. This reallt makes the video hard to see
Quick question. What are called shirts that are coloured/striped/whatnot but keep a white collar ?? I really fancy those but so hard to come by. Thanks
I need to learn more about how to iron properly...(watches 2 minutes of video). "I recommend purchasing a $500 ironing board." Fuggit, I'll just have wrinkles.
kapitanbomba1989 You cannot be serious with this comment. It is practically essential to iron clothes when necessary, gentleman or not. Do you really think there are always cleaners and services you can easily drive around everywhere and hand a pair to if you are certain places of distance or short on time? I don't care how punctual and planned you believe yourself to be it will happen to anyone and better to learn it, and remember it, than not at all. I cannot tell you how many times the urgency to have to quickly iron my suits to be ready for meetings. That is an important responsibility.
This video would rightly be called “How to Shop for Irons and Ironing Boards” and not “How to Iron a Shirt” since you never explained how to do that. Wasted my time.
I've been making my own spray starch for years, easy recipes are online, and the cost is almost zero. If you are a starcher, try it, you'll probably like it.
The distilled water fact was pretty interesting, probably will use that in the future. I sometimes get problems with small yellowish build up getting on my clothes.
Great video, as always. And very timely for me because I've just completely replaced my wardrobe and have been looking at ironing boards and irons to keep my new clothes looking great. Thank you very much. I'll be awaiting the next segment with bated breath
These videos are SOOO HELPFUL-never heard of a Tailor's Ham or Clapper, who knew!? I am definitely investing in a sole plate, as I iron all the time and often have to guess on proper temps as they are not labelled on many of my garments, it will be a huge help. Thanks very much for ALL of your informative videos, they are just wonderful. You guys are truly the "gentlemens' gentlemen. Much Love from New Mexico USA!
I'm joining the military soon & a lot of time will be spent washing, drying, ironing & folding clothes. Is it advisable to dry clothes with an iron to speed the process up?
EPIC VIDEO. i remember when you had less than 5k subs..........damn i should have started a youtube channel back then. i had just bought i am dandy book and now look at you. making amazing vids with a massive following. PEOPLE FOLLOW YOUR HEART HE DID IT AND NOW HE IS HUGE!
And if anyone ever melts something synthetic onto their iron I can tell you that turning the iron on and rubbing the stain with paracetamol (panadol, Tylenol, etc) will clean it off really nicely just watch your fingers!
I bought a vacuum ironing board in Egypt but there was no instruction manual with it, just a 2 page leaflet in Arabic which I don't understand. Where can I learn more about how to get the best out of my vacuum board please?
I've been ironing my whole life with my mom, but I'm nowhere near as good as her and I'm already in my 20s. The hardest part is ironing my skirts and we don't have an ironing table, just some unused bed sheets and a large dining table
Sprating the clothes with distilled water, rain water, or Niagara spray starch provide outstanding results. If you hand wash your clothes, wash with rain water to use less soap and rinse with regular water.
I have the vacuum board and the steam press but I only use the steam press for my dress pants because it makes for a WONDERFUL and quick ironing very professional but I'd never use it on anything but pants because shirts and the other things are much more complicated to iron.
in my opinion this haircut is the best for you , far away better than the usually i see in your videos which, personally, i didn't like , so thanks for your high level videos , you are the different one from the others
