Awesome video. I haven't ever found a clear answer from any FAA document on when to start the timer inbound but I teach my students your method for timing the inbound course. One thing I thought you may not have mentioned, and something that the AIM says pretty clearly, is that we should be starting our timer for the outbound course over or abeam the fix. When it comes to a VOR, this is done by looking for the flag flip on a CDI FROM to TO. That will be abeam the station and always the same spot over the ground. I see too many students do it when they level wings, and students, or any pilot that is hand flying, can rarely hold a perfect standard rate turn for a minute at a constant airspeed.

I would love to see a two-part series on the Garmin 500 autopilot. First part would be on pre-flight and emergency response, as well as maintaining a heading in flight. The second part would be on NAV and approach modes, as well as go around in the auto pilot. That would be a real gift for a lot of us.

Generally using a GPS in a hold you’re set you up for a 4 DME leg. Timing of one minute is usually done with the VOR’s. I always to my VOR‘s to the radial. I’m supposed to use as a hold and as an identifier for the intersection. Remember the rule if the VOR and the needle are on the same side with a from indication, you were not there yet. remember your orientation if you leave the OBS set to the opposite of your direction. Some people call this reverse sensing.

This is true if they’re published as GPS holds, but what I often see your pilots flying all types of holes with GPS equipment
@aviatortrucker6285
@aviatortrucker6285 Год назад
@@TheFinerPoints Jason, that is true. Remember a good GPS will actually show you when and how to make the turn. A better system like the G 1000 you just hit the NAV button and sit back and drink your coffee. On the subject, you just said before, you can also build your own hold on the GPS and set it to minutes or DME as well as direction of term. it’s too bad that we no longer have. NDB. Those holds were fun to master. I still kind of make up my own and do it on X-Plane 11 flight simulator since the standard Cessna 172 has a working ADF.

@@aviatortrucker6285 Yes, the G1000 makes things super easy! I miss NDBs too. Fun fact -- you can use the bearing pointers to "simulate" NDB navigation. I love this! On holds ... remember that he hold has to be in the flight plan for the autopilot to fly it. There are a lot of ways to do this but on the G1000 it would have to be either as a procedure turn or missed approach hold. I used OBS mode in this video because that's the "grey" area I'm trying to address

@@TheFinerPoints I know the bearing pointers can be used like an ADF but sometimes they’re hard to see or they overlay each other. I think too many people use the simulator in auto pilot too much. It’s a little bit work but you can free fly anywhere you want. I usually fly to an NDB using the ADF and create a hold like “Hold Northeast 240 bearing right turns. The inbound is heading 240 toward the station. “As you know, the hold entry is still the same but it gets even more challenging when you add a little bit of wind. Remember the pointer points opposite of your nose and the tail of the needle always points in the direction the wind is coming from on the ADF. I never really understood what and how the BFO was used, but I know what it is. Lol!

@@TheFinerPoints I teach all my students this method in our GNS430 6 pack seminoles. They all become jedi masters of unpublished holding using OBS. Thanks Jason!

What is the software used when you showed the G1000? Is it something someone can get on their computer/ipad to practice using that avionics suite?

I have a very serious question about holding patterns. Why on Earth do I need to get exactly 1 minute on my inbound leg? Why oh why.
@TheFinerPoints
@TheFinerPoints Год назад
We’ll it’s wise to negotiate (ask for distance legs) … but I suppose the reason is that they have to design the protected airspace of the hold for the maximum holding speed, which is probably not you. But I believe that the struggle to get there (1 min) will keep you of trouble even if you don’t get it. It’s like … a company that’s not growing is dying. A pilot not shooting for one minute ends up at 5

The channel is slowly becoming only an ad for ForeFlight.. and I don’t like it. Also, a real question: what can you use to know you are abeam of fix, i.e. when you are to start your outbound? The only thing that comes to mind is half-duration of a standard turn? Cheers

Always worth a try. Ask for delay vectors, ask to slow down instead of a hold, ask for distance legs instead of times ... all great stuff! You won't always get it, but it's worth a try.
