Today we're going to review a digital writing and literature program for homeschool that I just absolutely LOVE. Essentials in Writing is a homeschool writing and literature curriculum that can be used from Kindergarten through 12th grade and teaches grammar, writing and more. The program includes video lessons combined with lessons that you can download and print at home. My 9 year old has been making a TON of progress with her writing skills since we started this program. So I'm really excited to share it with you today!

I’ve been using it for 3 grades (years) now! It’s been great! We’ve been using the upper grades so I also purches Essentials in Literature.

I did a review of Night Zookeeper recently. That's completely online. But it's still important imo that kids get handwriting practice in some form.

What is the “assessment” version like for the course? When the student completes an assignment, how do they get evaluated?

These will be quizzes and unit tests that the student will complete at various points throughout the program. The parent will evaluate/grade them. They also have a scoring service for the compositions that are done in the higher levels.

I realize it’s child specific as each child works at his/her own pace but was wondering about how much time is spent on each lesson?

Hello, I am an immigrant parent with a very low level of English. I can't grade writing. Is there any program that automatically grades writing or provides advice? Also, will the program you explained be graded on the answer sheet?(G3,G7 children)

This program offers a scoring service, but otherwise, since the work is done offline, it would need to be graded by the parents. Something fully online might be better suited for your needs. You might want to take a look at Night Zookeeper.

So, the print option means we have to print it ourselves? Or does it mean that they send printed material?

If you choose digital only then you need to print it, if you choose digital and print then you get the videos online but they will send you the printed materials.

How many days a week would this program require?

We did it about 3 days a week last year but it didn't take a whole school year. I'd say 2 days a week would be good..

Most likely, but I recommend you review the full standards guides for the grade level below, above and her grade level and pick the one that most closely matches what she should be working on. You can find it on their website under resources, curriculum guides.
