This is part 1 of 3 of my review of the popular Estes Tandem-X launch set. In this part, I go over what's in the box, and how the launch pad is assembled. Part 2 is the build and launch of the Amazon rocket. Part 3 is the build and launch of the Crossfire ISX rocket.

Nice video. I had the rocket Ester Alpha for a long time and just uploaded a video building it to my channel. I used Gorilla glue, not sure if it was the right glue but it worked. Hope to fly it soon, bad weather here now.

Its a good beginner's deal. 2 rockets, launch pad and controller. Add engines and batteries and an adult supervisor and the kids will have a blast.

Well done. Thanks for all the information. I purchased my kit with launchpad and found it a bit frustrating that there was not a directions paper on how to set up the pad. I am looking forward to putting together my rockets and letting them fly. I am working with a Trail Life USA troop. Thanks again.

So i got pretty much the exact same set, same rockets. But the launch pad came with 3 rods and the set came with a cheap feeling ignition control module

Since Christmas, we now have 4 Tandem X kits. Yet we've never launched a rocket before. Just curious how many engines and how much wadding I'm going to need to buy? (This might turn out to be a really expensive gift to receive.) Also, the box says I need a starter. Is that just all part of the engine I buy? Your help would be very much appreciated.

Some engine packs are 2-packs and some are 3-packs depending on where you get them. I would say get at least 2 packs of B4-2s and 2 packs A8-3s. The engine packs come with enough starters(igniters for the engines). But beware, if you're launching in cold weather, it can be hard to ignite the engines. So if you're going to launch if it's cold enough for snow, then maybe get an extra pack of starters. As for wadding, one small bag should be good. Would you recommend it to someone who havn't ever launched a rocket?

Any of the launch sets that Estes offers are fine since they are centered around people new to it. Once you have the launch equipment, then you can pick whatever rocket you'd like from there, maybe add the larger launch rod for "D" rockets, and so on.

They are reusable. Just buy motors and more wadding if need be.

Does the kit come with a engine??

No it does not. You have to buy those separately. On the box, there are recommendations as to which ones to use. Start with a B6-4 for the Amazon and an A8-3 for the Crossfire. If you can only buy one pack, then get the B6-4 as you can launch both rockets on those. You'll also need wadding(fireproof paper) if the engine pack doesn't come with it, and batteries for the launch controller.
