Aerial view of Calheta bay and Ponta do sol, Madeira Portugal.
Calheta is a municipality on the southwest coast of the Portuguese island of Madeira. Sheltered by sea walls, Praia da Calheta has imported sand, making it one of the island’s few sandy beaches. The nearby villages of Paúl do Mar and Jardim do Mar are known for strong surf. The clifftop Casa das Mudas Arts Center showcases contemporary art. Engenho da Calheta is a working sugar cane factory, with an on-site museum.
